Didn’t the UK sign the 1994 Budapest Memorandum specifically guaranteeing the integrity of Ukrainian territory? Do British politicians really have such short memories? It is shameful that nothing was done to support this guaranty starting with Crimea in 2014. Quite obviously the word of the UK and the United States, another signatory, mean nothing.

He tried to pressure officials to cheat and lie and not certify a legal fair election. He never conceded to his opponent, and he lied about the fairness of the election. Churchill made an appeal to morality over legality. The final tribunal is our own conscience. We are fighting to re-establish the reign of law and to protect the liberties of small countries. Our defeat would mean an age of barbaric violence. Our defeat would be fatal not only to ourselves but to the liberties and independence of all small countries in Europe. Small countries must not tie our hands when we are fighting for their rights and freedom. The letter of the law must not in supreme emergency obstruct those who are charged with its protection and enforcement. Humanity, rather than legality, must be our guide. Winston Churchill in November 1939 on the cabinet's decision of turning down placing sea mines in Narwik to not infringe upon Swedish and Norwegian neutrality.
One does not make wars less likely by formulating rules of warfare... war cannot be humanized. It can only be eliminated. Albert Einstein
The special rules didn't prevent escalation, and it is time to drop the gloves, Russia wanted to bring Europe the sword. It is high time that we stop holding Ukraine back. Russia is most vulnerable in Russia proper, not Crimea or the Donbas.

The 'drawdown' to supply Ukraine from our own stocks has left the cupboards bare, and it will take YEARS (5+) to replenish stocks, and that's without constantly supplying Ukraine with further weapons. Add to that the U.S SPR is at it's lowest volume since the mid-1980's means we are in a very dangerous position if we want to keep poking the Russian bear.

Agreed. For peace Putin has to realize that there is nothing left to gain. (But with sanctions, Europe finally taking its military commitment seriously, and Finland and Sweden joining NATO, you would think that would have already been abundantly clear.) To make a deal, What Trump has to realize is that the important parties to satisfy aren't just the Russians but America's European customers. What is in the USA's best interest is a Europe ìndependent enough to be seriously investing in its defense but not questioning the American commitment to the point where they consider it in their self defense interests to limit their purchasing of American defense products. The other aspect is that this conflict provides the opportunity to showcase American vs European vs Russian technology which translates into future sales. The worst case scenario is a Europe so unsure of American commitment that countries who view themselves as targets of Russian expansion decide to implement their own nuclear deterence capability. In the end, it might make the most economic (and from a negotiating strength perspective) sense to continue, or increase, aid to Ukraine.
