Ish_Violet :p XD the story from this show has issues. A Taiwanese immigrant family preaching about China and mixing up languages and cultures just to dumb down for American audiences. Most Taiwanese refused to call themselves Chinese since they have their own country. This show does have an identity issues from the casting of Korean Americans to play Taiwanese and the characters proclaimed themselves as Taiwanese’s but preaching about China pride, and the family speaks broken Mandarin but the little boy spoke Cantonese which is Southern Chinese language from Guangdong Province. This show pretty much confused itself and created an identity issues.
@@CrimsonEclipse well yeah, it's an American show. You got it right on the part where they don't really get things correct but the majority audience won't understand nor care anyways. And the Taiwanese aren't against being called Chinese exactly. Just not Chinese "from China". In Mandarin, we call Chinese people "hua ren", which basically refers to people who are of Chinese descent. And Taiwanese ARE Chinese in that sense. They aren't from China yet we still call them "hua ren" because they speak Mandarin and are of Chinese descent. If you are an American Chinese, I'd still call you "hua ren", doesn't matter where your ancestors or parents came from, be it China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore or any other country. You got Chinese blood in you, that's what counts.
CrimsonEclipse I agree with most of what you said but considering the show is based on a book based on a real family, maybe they did consider themselves Chinese, I don't know. xD
acetomics two separate countries, but the same cultural identity. Taiwan is a country not born out of ethnic differences, but rather due to international politics. Same with North and South Korea, really. Differences in dialect might occurred, but then again, even Shanghai and Guangdong have different dialects and customs from each other (despite being a part of the PRC).
I don't think any actual chinese kid would do this because we're very non-confrontational... but I literally had tears in my eyes at the end. so proud of them.
Asian took OUR cultural identity prior than grade. He may got an F , but he stand up for who(culturally speaking) he is. And that what make Jessica proud.
What is interesting is that Jamaica actually has a native Chinese community that has been there since the 19th century and they speak English with a Jamaican accent! Coolest thing ever!
Yo Chinese American here to the rescue. Almost every Chinese person speaks a tad bit Cantonese. Just like how every English speaker can say a few Spanish words off the top of their head. Taiwanese ppl are Chinese, so ofc they regard themselves as Chinese and speak Mandarin, their government is the Republic of CHINA.
And also how every South Indian when taking their mandatory Hindi class remembers a few Hindi words just to pass the class and then forgets the language completely after passing the class. My parents are a great example of those who can’t manage a single conversation in Hindi both for speaking and understanding it. However, I still remember basic Hindi as I had to take Hindi my last year in India before coming to the US. However, in India, almost no one has a common foreign language they can speak to someone outside their state. Each state in India pretty much has its own regional language that makes Hindi ignorable despite Hindi the official language of India. Only under half of India even knows some English despite also being an official language of India.
Hello? Chinese person here and this is blatantly untrue? Cantonese isn't widely spoken among Chinese people, it is mostly only spoken in Hong Kong, Macau, and some parts of South China. And Taiwanese people are famously resisting the label of 'Chinese' and instead is opting for 'Taiwanese'. I just want to know where you got your information from?
@@samneedsnuthin eck i guess it's just demographic? many immigrant chinese speak or understand a little cantonese because they were mostly from taiwan/hk/southern china. my family was from the north so i can't speak/understand cantonese to save my life, but many of my chinese friends can. though it is true -- i would say that many chinese speak cantonese, but compared to the overall population, those who speak cantonese are a small minority. most chinese have their own dialects, but i guess the cantonese have a larger presence overseas due to most immigrants being cantonese?
