I love this live version for long vocal improvisation , starting from 4:43. It builds up a tension, which reaches climax by smashing organ keyboards, and then song returns back to main theme.
Okay so not only did Joe Lynn Turner need to sing his own material during his time in Rainbow, but he also needed to sing Ronnie James Dio, Graham Bonnett, and Ian Gillan. That's a tall order for any singer, and he crushed it. He was so versatile
Uh, he didn't "crush" anything. He did no such thing. He sang in tune in his limp-wristed way and made Ritchie happy for a couple albums. He was a great vocalist - but the "least" of the Rainbow singers.
I was at this concert, in between the show he breaks his guitar in 2, throws a guitar at the audience damn near almost hit me with it, a couple of guys started fighting over it, one of them wins takes a guitar home immediately, I was just smoking a joint watching the spectacle believe me it was a very good show
I have never seen Ritchie any other way. That dude is bad to the damn bone. They say he's a dick, but to me, he HAS A RIGHT to be so. I'm the same way about Italian cooking. I will be the first to admit I'm an arrogant jerk, but taste my pizzaiola or my escarole and beans and you'll see why.
@@joedavila406 OMG I was there too! Stationed at Fort Sam Houston. Ran around with The Von Erich brothers. Remember they found Gino Hernandez dead in his place OD on blow and steroids?! ❣️
Thing is, though it definitely isn't as powerful as the original, it wasn't the same when Bonnett did it live either. Something really special happened in the studio when this was recorded because even Bonnett can't quite get it. He gets closer than this, but it's really hard to replicate.
Very difficult position for JLT to have to sing songs by singers with completely different styles. In retrospect he did a stellar job- and took a lot of stick which was uncalled for. They had to change the keys of a couple of songs - Lost in Hollywood was changed from B to A, Long Live Rock and Roll to G to E, and Man On The Silver Mountain from G to D (!). Worth checking out that last one because its substantially different and really shows off his talent. It went from 70s hard rock to 80s AOR, which whilst isn't something I would have preferred, he does an excellent and convincing job.
Holy sh*t! Talk about deja vu! I live in Ohio now but was at this concert with my friends Marty and Alex. Thanks for posting and allowing me to relive one of my better memories when I was a long haired young man living in SA. I shave my head now, btw. Go Spurs!!!
James Dickson i missed that show back at the ol' Hemisphere Arena. I recall it was filmed for MTV. i was only 14 then lol and i went to many a Spurs game . So u must remember Stone City Attractions and the Godfather of Rock Joe Anthony
JLT rules. Dio has kind of a dungeons and dragons style, and has the aura of a wizard, but JLT's singing is saturated with sex and soul and blues. Pure awesomeness, and this vocal impro is just superb.
I'm a rock-solid Graham Bonnet fan, at least as far as Rainbow goes. Not trying to take anything away from the other guys, but Bonnet was my favorite Rainbow vocalist by far. This song with JLT is like expecting a shot of rye and getting Tvarski.
Damn Blackmore really really is getting his rocks off on this performance too bad his hair looks kind of Richard Simmons-ish LOL Blackmore is a rock and roll genius to this very day
Joe Lynn Turner was a very good vocalist for Rainbow. Dio wrote different lyrics when he was with Rainbow that were about medieval castles and other things back then. Very cool and JLT just made Rainbow more mainstream hard rock.
Four deep purple members...Blackmore, Turner, Glover and Airey. While at the same time Whitesnake had Coverdale, Paice and Lord. And Black Sabbath singer was Ian Gillan. All around this time.
Graham Bonnett was Rainbows best singer,I do like RJD all and all as a singer(Graham Bonnett sing for Black Sabbath? I don't think he could) JLT is a great singer as well.I think Graham Bonnet had the voice to sing Dio songs and JLT songs.Bonnett was a vocal monster
Either RJD or GB or JLT, they are all professional and very good singer. No such thing in labeling monster or lighter. They have their own style of singing tone. Don't be so kiddie to make stupid comparison.
At this point he was going thru a new chanter every week and apart from Glover the others frequently changed too. Down to Earth is the last 'OK' Rainbow album (good in snippets, excellent in places but utter pish as well).
Love all the bits of Purple as Blackmore just plays around ...
I bought many of their albums!
Recorded August 18, 1982. Saxon opened the show.
I WAS THERE IN THE FRONT ROW WEARING WHITE SHIRT WITH BLACK SLEEVES
Still love them rock on
You're a lucky person to catch the Rainbow 🌈 on a good night.
One of the most perfect/ underrated rock songs ever!!! True gold!!
Bonnet was a phenomenon.
If bonnet stayed with rainbow they would have got as big as the stones and zeppelin
@@toddgakk5783 Let's not get carried away now.. x)
This is Joe Lynn Turner.
Insane!! Bonnet has never been more than mediocre in singing talent!! Stage presence, but not a pure singer

But he wasn't them - their names are revered I forgot about him - sorry 👋
Yeah, Rainbow's only female vocalist. he was a joke
@ganndeber1621 Dude, you are the joke
Ritchies guitar sounds awesome here.
Has his guitar ever sounded anything else ?
too bad he wasn't such a prick
@@darklord1134 No shit.
ritchie was really feelin his oats.
sizzling
"Scratch my back" at 6:49 then Blackmore smashing this signature riff till the end is Epic, an amazing live performance!
And every hair was in place.
Ritchie Blackmore's just on top just totally jamming here. Richie was on fire in San Antonio.

This was aired live on MTV. That's why blackmore is putting on a show
WTF??? It was on sold VHS a million years ago.
Richie brings the fire. Always !!!!!!!
Damn, they are on fire!
How Roger Glover is holding it down. Catch Ritchie on a good night; he is one of the best ever.
Graham bonnet is great stylish in his singing🎤
That's not Graham Bonnet.

In this song the sparks fly
Ritchie B. Monster of rock
rainbow best concert takes the guitar into the statisfear the work he put in all the best richie brian
Ritchie's eyes are shining like hell))) What a drive!
Graham Bonnet made this a rock song. Joe Lynn Turner turns it into a pop song.
Yup
🤣🤣🤣
Ой да ладно! Джо Линн охуенный вокалист, просто песня была написана не для него. Но хитов он спел больше, при всём уважении к Боннету.
Неповторимое звучание! Золотая пора!

This is a real music
Awesome!!!
It is so good to listen Graham songs from JLT since they are all in tune and well performed.
When was grahm out of tune ? Part of his legacy is screaming in tune
Turner, Blackmore e Rosenthal fantastici!!!
Тёрнер вокалист великий, но эта вещь Боннета!
Угу...
Спасибо маме, что родила меня так рано, что я вырос на этой музыке. Мне 64, и я тощусь от рока!
Jlt is singing it like he cant be bothered 😢.
Some things are best left to graham bonnet.
francamente un cantante qualsiasi: bravo ma uno dei tanti. Graham Bonnet era strepitoso!
グラハムとは、違ったカッコ良さと、味がある‼️

JLT rules. Dio has kind of a dungeons and dragons style, and has the aura of a wizard, but JLT's singing is saturated with sex and soul and blues. Pure awesomeness, and this vocal impro is just superb.
this vocal improvisation is the best part.
Рядом не стоял с Боннетем
That's a good sounding arena, I saw Metallica there in 89. Black Sabbath Live Evil was also recorded there in part.
So so many great concerts in that place, Hemisphere Plaza
JLT sings well everything! Dio, Bonnet, GIllian´s songs, he can sing anything any time. Amazing singer JLT!!
I'm a rock-solid Graham Bonnet fan, at least as far as Rainbow goes. Not trying to take anything away from the other guys, but Bonnet was my favorite Rainbow vocalist by far. This song with JLT is like expecting a shot of rye and getting Tvarski.
I like his version of "Smoke"!
Come to think of it I think the whole band was on fire that night in San Antonio
Ritchie Blackmore= most underrated guitarist….or one of them anyway……I love the guy❤️🎶🎸🤣😎❤️
This was written for Bonnett, JLT can sing but hasnt got his power.
Yeah! Bonnet was much way better with this..
Just like if Bonnet attempted Cant Happen Here or Stone Cold or Death Alley Driver. Actually I would love to hear that!
Turner looks a hell of a lot cooler

Bobby Rondinelli...top musicians all over👍

Bonnet THE GREAT!!!
this song needs more graham bonnet
Love Ritchie
Rainbow original lineup will never be beaten..Blackmore Dio , Bain , Carey, Powell,,,Rising is a masterpiece.
that`s not the original line up ....
Joe Lynn Turner is awesome
JLT sounds in this song slightly more melodic than Bonnet...but I miss those shoutings in his performance... female chorus help something...
Ooooo burn to deep purple in the beginning geez Richie.😱😲🙃
Graham Bonnet had a more raucous and soulful voice on the studio version
Graham Bonnet is a force of nature.

2:33 - Could anyone kindly tell me what you think Ritchie was trying to say or indicate, and to whom?
Giving musical cues to the band .
From 6:10 on The best part of song. Glover + Turner shine.
👍👍👍👏👏👏
Miss my young MTV days lol SAN ANTONIO ROCK CAPITAL OF THE WORLD!!! Long live the memories at the old HEMISPHERE ARENA HOME OF THE BELOVED SPURS!!
Rainbow at their very peak here.
So tell me you never heard On Stage or Monsters of Rock without tell me...
JLT is ok, but nowhere near the vocal power of Graham Bonnet. As others have said, tough gig to make this sound as good as the studio original.
I still have the ticket stub
He's hitting the strings like I'm the boss and fuck em all, and I think it was Ritchie mentality all time haha
JLT can’t carry Graham Bonnett’s jockstrap.... Ritchie showing some intensity which is refreshing
Graham bonnet

why cool glover always on fire in rainbow?

I never was fan of Joe Lynn Turner, considering him as a poor Dio substitute, but he's great as live vocalist, who can tease and warm up the public
Just because dio is better it doesnt mean turner isnt great as well. His voice is very good.
Joe Lynn Turner was a very good vocalist for Rainbow. Dio wrote different lyrics when he was with Rainbow that were about medieval castles and other things back then. Very cool and JLT just made Rainbow more mainstream hard rock.
JLT is no Graham Bonnet. Not by a long shot.

You’re no Graham bonnet not the same😔😔😔😔
Para que se separan estas bandas tan grandes , si van a hacer lo mismo que sus bandas originales
Do I really hear female backing singers :D ?
Yes, two just offstage. They had them for this tour, not sure about other tours.
@@paulcolville5972 Thanx ^^
Who was the drummer here? I noted that if Cozy played, the paddle bass is more heavier. This one is a bit lighter compare to Cozy...
The drummer was Bobby Rondinelli.
Ritchie "fuck🎸" Blackmore 👏👏👏
good effort but not a patch on graham bonnet vocals
That Roger Glover on bass?
