Something unmentioned to note on the ports- Another difference in the gamecube version. The ps2 and Xbox versions had 6 voices to choose from when creating a protagonist. Due to limited audio storage the gamecube version only had 1 voice for the player, the "Rough" voice. Great vid man.
I had a homie who would burn CD's back in those days, I probably had him put 3/4 of this game's soundtrack on a CD for me, and that song was the reason for it. Such a banger
For those that love seeing this game in action, there's an official yearly tournament at CEO where you can see some of the best at the game play. Just don't expect alot of your favorite characters to be used, as alot of them are banned from tournament play; Stickky Fingaz is technically so broken, he's on a tier level of his own and permabanned
Happy 20th anniversary for Def Jam Fight for NY! What a great game got me into liking rap music's and games together. Rap and games did great back in 2004. Such as Esham, Red dead revolver, Insane Clown posse, Backyard wrestling 2, 50 Cent, Halo 2, Twiztid, Manhunt, Anybody Killa, GTA San Andreas, Ying yang twinz and the rest. And please tell me I'm not the only one who likes rap songs and games together.
Me too! I grow up liking rap music's and games. They were the best back then! I'm kinda sad they don't make rap songs and games they used to. Songs and games like Call of Duty, Run the Jewels, Halo and the rest. I'm old school so I rather just listen and play songs and games back in the 2000s.
Vendetta was just the appetizer. FFNY was the full course meal. Icon was the sickness and vomit.😂 And upset stomach. Rapstar was the final nail. Icon 2 was lost media.
@nehemiahpouncey3607 This isn't facts at all. Rapstar is a singing game that is part of the Songstar games collection. Has absolutely nothing to with the Def Jam fighting games. Lol
It's really sad that we will most likely never get another game again. I really enjoyed this video and honestly Def Jam FFNY/V is why I love many of the rappers I do today with Redman, DMX, and Busta, and Method Man being absolutely top 10 rappers of all time in my list. There's so much love and care to the hip-hop culture with this game and we'll never get something like this again. It's why I continue to do my Music Compilations just to feel and share with people what older, mid 2000's, modern, pop, rock, etc songs sound like with Def Jam Fight For NY. Again great, video, can't wait for more!
I beat this story mode so much it never got old to me. We really didn’t understand at the time how good we had it from all the rappers which most did amazing with their voice acting plus an incredible story I watched every cut scene so many times i was so hooked and immersed into the story when I was younger. The gameplay the moves was the shit. The clothes tattoos and jewelry was icing on top of everything. Damn EA just remaster this masterpiece please you don’t have to change shit just make the graphics up to date and we locked in I bet it sells crazy. I wish I never sold my PS2 and games to GameStop back then lol.
I never get tired of fan boying over this game...during the pandemic I got new controllers and wires for my ps2 and even bought this game for an insane $175 on Amazon 😅 I eventually stopped playing it again but I'll never let my ps2 and def jam out of my sight again. I always need it in case I have that urge. Matter of fact, the other day a new friend of mine mentioned how they played def jam back in the day and we definitely had fun hooking up the ps2 and goin at it. I need to get a multi tap tho,the one I got during the pandemic doesn't work 😅😂
As a fan of ANY video game that let's me customize characters; from The Godfather, to The Sims, from Skyrim to Saints Row 2... And for as little as I care for fighting games, this was a fun one & a hilarious/interesting story :3
My created character always come out looking the same, lol I’ll take a remaster for that alone! Red sleeping random on the couch was really on brand; what an entrance
20 years later and still haven’t had more fun playing a game than this. The customization was so ahead of its time. The fighting styles everything was perfect.
Seriously. 💯💯 the fluidity of the combat the flow of the combos the literal mixed fighting styles/MMA styles you could get based off of you had 2 styles or 3 styles or how much in each physical attribute u had was INSANE. game was Truly ahead of its time and one of a kind. An actual masterpiece a true gem. From the mechanics and controls & gameplay to the character customization. A true masterpiece
This game is a classic and has always been one of top 5 games of all time I have this on a PPSSPP simulator for iPhone, my favourite fighting style is street fighting twice and kickboxing, nothing beats powerful punches and kicks with kickboxing combos
I loved this game. It is one of the best fighting/wrestling games of the era. There was also a bug that made heavy punches didn't work if you did the Martial Arts-Submission-Streetfighting combo.
You put this video together! Amazing breakdown.... I still have the PS2, PSP, and OG XBOX versions in my collection. Never gave them away and still play frequently.
This game brings a lot of memories from my middle school years. I had a friend that had this game on PS2 and let me borrow it in exchange for 50 Cent Bulletproof and i really enjoyed playing it almost all the time. A classic of the PS2 era that i really wish it got a remaster at least but i doubt it would be possible nowadays, not to mention that copies of this game are somewhat expensive on Ebay last time i checked.
Marvelous Retrospective Phantom💯😎 The Anniversary Just Passed For This Masterpiece, I Own 5 In Total, 3 PS2 Copies And 2 Xbox Copies. Safe To Say I Love This Series To Death. Best Game Of All Time Personally
Your retrospective on both def jam vendetta and def jam fight for NY are absolutely fantastic and will ever consider doing a video about what would like to an def jam 3 if or ever got made what would you like to see for the game like character roaster and story etc.
I beat this whole game on hard with zero losses in one sitting. I maxed out my characters stats. That was about 20 years ago. Now i can barely beat the beginning on easy.😂😂😂
I want to share something with you all....back during my PS2 days. Me & 4 of my homies would throw these tournaments between us by playing with real money....I made like $1,000 that night by choosing "Ice T". One of my guys would give that work with "Busta Rhymes"....Another homie would use "Bone Crusher"...i would take em' all down...Dont let my "Ice T" grab you cuz his finisher was brual...& he'll talk smack after the beat down....Again i made good loot that night...spending "Gwop"on my girl...my kids...spending tons of ones on stripper booty with the fellas at the club... Thanks "Def Jam Fight For NY".....!!! YOU MADE ME FAMOUS THAT NIGHT!!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
While we had yet to get a proper sequel, remaster nor remake, we at least have a prototype build that was released not too long ago. This is my favorite fighting video game aside from Mortal Kombat 9. My childhood memory is slightly different, but I still play this game sometimes. The only drawback for me is DMX’s decision to not be included.
Capone was standing beside N.O.R.E. but overall this was a game i constantly rented and enjoyed. Super sad icons didn't meet the hype of the prior games
I think that, alongside God of War 2 and Chaos Legion, Def Jam Fight for NY was one of my most played games when I was a kid. I have no idea how this game came into my hands, but wow, I loved the fight styles and the stages. I played every style in every map in every mode. My favorite Fighting styles where kickboxing and submissions (when I wanted to end a fight more easily against a strong opponent). God, now I want to play this again
Irony is as grimy as Sticky was listening to him would have saved us a lot of headache. All this club fighting and it just devolved to what Sticky suggested they do in the opening.
I much like most people freaking loved this game. Also I should note the PSP port actually enhanced the styles by making it that you could combine the same styles to get more in depth with it. (Which I don't remember being in the first one) ,the mount system was pretty good and the blazing system was a bit better to. Though I don't remember there being less characters than the original but I could be wrong
That fuckin tag team match with Magic and Crack took ages for me to beat man. Blaze was no help and they kept taking him out immediately then double teaming me. Can't remember how I won but it took a long ass time.
I beat it by jumping magic with blaze, Crack just reversed everything so I tried to get rid of magic quick so I wasn't getting rabbit punched while I was also taking a ton of heavy grapples from Crack lmao. Shit had me stressed😂
I loved this game - and the hidden fithing styles like drunken fist and othrs! Def Jam Fight For New York needs a proper remake/ remaster, with online play, expanded rosters, and doa MK style regular new characters, new finishers,, new gear dlcs.
Been playing this the last couple days, still a fantastic game. My only gripe is having only one white voice actor for the character creation lol. My voice does not match my character at all lmao
I LOVED this game!!! My career char was a wirey tatted up anime dude with grey wolverine hair. Base was double martial arts, then Street fighting to round off the 3 skills. I then trained in speed and stamina exclusively so I could leap around the arena kicking teeth in after jumping off walls and stuff. So much fun!
31:05 - you might note you NEVER see the girlfriend at this point; because since the player can lose to Sticky or fail to complete the objective in time - she is NOT guaranteed to survive (which I think is a) stupid and b) needlessly punitive, and the one thing I WOULD change about the story) so it is left unconfirmed [and I've read it was done intentionally = though it would have been more satisfying to have confirmation of her canon survival] that she does live. I do really wish you could find this in the X-box Store online. Between this and Web of Shadows, one is my (originally unexpected) absolute favorite fighting game that I DID take a risk on as a "wild card" purchase... and the other is one I regret not taking a chance on to buy at the time.
Something unmentioned to note on the ports-
Another difference in the gamecube version.
The ps2 and Xbox versions had 6 voices to choose from when creating a protagonist.
Due to limited audio storage the gamecube version only had 1 voice for the player, the "Rough" voice.

When those credits hit and Joe Budden's "Take a Walk with Me" hits gave me chills the first time I beat the game a true child hood memory.
Fighting Crow was ridiculous. It was great!
I had a homie who would burn CD's back in those days, I probably had him put 3/4 of this game's soundtrack on a CD for me, and that song was the reason for it. Such a banger
First heard of this song from this game
Damn it was driving me crazy the voice actor for d mob and behold it’s none other than Christopher judge. Kratos himself
I was thinking the same thing, listening to D Mob talk in this video, I was like, that voice sounds familiar 😅😅😅
*We all know how Kratos go to work too....!*
old kratos. og kratos is still TC
The real Kratos was in the PS2 era shout-out to TC
This still blows my mind and why hasn’t anybody modded D Mob into God of War😂😂😂
It sucks that we wont get a remastered because of the music and the artist but the culture needs it!

@Docmain3 they turned the defjam

I loved fight for NY. I really wish it got a sequel or a remaster.
I love that Def Jam Vendetta & FFNY was built on the AKI Engine. The same engine used to make WWF No Mercy. The best wrestling game of all time.

As a kid, when I saw Ice-T flip that tire iron, I knew this game was gonna be real

The create a finisher was insane I loved this game so much
It makes me mad that they don’t make games like this anymore…just fun, no overblown story, and easy to understand.

We need Def Jam Fight for L.A
MIAMI
FACTS
Fun fact, the VA for D-Mob is Christopher Judge, the Voice Actor for the modern God of War's Kratos!

I love both games but FFNY was really the one that stuck with me,I bought a copy from my local retro store for $200 it was so worth it
Def jam fight for ny should've got a sequel i hated icon
Icon was total trash.
Icon isn't even worthy to be called it's sequel
Fight for ny is the sequel 🤣🤣🤣
