- The artists YK band (Yerko Lorca & Kuan Yin) interpret with the lyre of stele from Luna, their version of the oldest preserved Greek song complete, the Seikilos Epitaph.
The Seikilos epitaph is the oldest surviving complete musical composition, including musical notation. The epitaph has been variously dated, but seems to be either from the 1st or the 2nd century CE.
The lyrics sing in ancient greeks, the meaning is
"While you live, shine
have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
and time demands his tribute."
The Epitaph was discovered in 1883 by Sir W. M. Ramsay in Tralleis, a small town near Aydın.

Seikilos wrote this (or had it written) for his wife Euterpe in lamentation of her death. Euterpe was named for the muse of music. Perhaps they were musicians devoted to the muse. It appears she blessed them as this song is still expressing the great love he had for her 2000 years later.
Thank you very much for sharing this version. A story could be possible.
A warm hug from both of you.😃❤️
Your story makes the song more poignantly beautiful ❤ Please, may I ask how you learned about it? 🙂
I wonder what Seikilos would think about his song being heard and enjoyed by the entire world?
Nobody knows....we can only enjoy it :)
Hoson zês, phainou,
While you live, shine,
mêden holôs su lupou;
have no grief at all;
pros oligon esti to zên,
life exists only for a short while,
to telos ho chronos apaitei.
and time demands its toll."
I absolutely love it. I'm greek and I feel honoured and thankful from listening to your interpretation. What I enjoy even more is how such an old song lives on and can still be meaningful and touch people's hearts. Have a good day! ^^

If this sounds familiar to your ear it’s because it’s one of the most commonly used modes for rock ‘n’ roll. Known as mixolydian, it is basically a major scale with the seventh-degree flated by a half-step. The tonal center is G. The two chords are Gmaj and Fmaj, and the scale is G mixolydian. A G major scale would be played: g, a, b, c, d, e, f#, g. But the G mixolydian scale, with the 7th degree flated, is: g, a, b, c, d, e, f, g. I love the way this guy plays the Greek Lyre, especially the harmonics.
Dear GuitarUn. Thank you for sharing your analysis and your opinion. We are very happy with our version of the Epitaph of Seikilos. hugs from both 🥰
It's still beautiful. From sorrow comes song. Good performance.

Thank you dear!
(Amazing! Bravo!)
Thank you very much dear hugs ❤️
Very beautiful. Very creative and may even by accident sound remotely similar to the original. I would so love to be able to hear the actual song as originally performed since it would provide such insight into the culture and world view. If someone 1000 years from now found a poem with things like Cmaj, Gmaj7 over it they may be able to reproduce the cords, but the melody would be lost. One could sing almost anything to tie the cords together and even in modern times the cord structure of a song may become the launching pad for a host of melodies. I’d love to be convinced. I’d give half my savings to hear a true Egyptian song, but sadly I am left only to imagine.
that is the destiny of us, nostalgic of the true ancient music. We may not like the sound of it, but it would be great to listen. Hugs.
Where did you get your lyre from? It sounds beautiful, and I'd love to know who made it!

Beautiful interpretation. Not very authentic, but that's ok.
The first time I watched this, I cried
Ok actually it's the fifth time I've watched this and I'm crying yet again
dude, this is cool
Me encanta tu interpretación.

What is the instrument she's playing? Asking for my paper which is due this Friday!
Did you get your paper in on time ?
It is called Guzheng. A type of harp from china.
酷
