- Ὅσον ζῇς, φαίνου (while you live shines), these are the first words of the oldest Greek song and also, the oldest preserved complete: The Epitaph of Seikilos. The adapted version with Tartessian lyre and tar by Yerko Lorca and Kuan Yin, was performed at National Chengchi University, for a didactic class on ethnic, traditional and historical music and instruments.
【Lyrics】
Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου
μηδὲν ὅλως σὺ λυποῦ
πρὸς ὀλίγον ἔστι[2] τὸ ζῆν
τὸ τέλος ὁ χρόνος ἀπαιτεῖ.
While you live, shine
have no grief at all
life exists only for a short while
and Time demands his due.

it's understandable why so many versions of this song interpret it as being very slow and mournful-it is literally inscribed on a gravestone. that being said, i feel like this interpretation makes way more sense for a song whose opening lyrics are something like "While you live, shine / have no grief at all".
it's not just "remember, you will die" it's "you're going to die one day, so embrace joy in the now". why wouldn't it be a happy song!
2000 years later and this song still being performed.
Seikilos would have been proud of his accomplishments.
2000 years and only 30k views damn

The lyrics to the song were written on a women's grave stone by her husband how succeed her. His name was Kilos
I have been ill will pneumonia and COVID-19 and this song has lifted me out of a dark place. God bless you 🤧🤗😘
This is the first time I have heard this rendition and it sounds so beautiful and uplifting!
Thank you so much for your comment
Mozart's been pretty quiet since this dropped
This song is still appropriate today, While you live, shine, let nothing grieve you, For life is short, and time will demand it's due. To me this means... Make the best of the life you have, shine, don't live in sadness,. For time will demand it's due.
I am in awe. Their rendition, although a bit modernized, breathes new life in to this song which is one of my favorites! Beautiful. They are very talented.

A tribute of Seikilos to his beloved Efterpi (wife/daughter/sister/) that died.

Thank you dear

Ancient music is so much more beautiful than today's in my opinion.
Very good!!! 💜💜💜💜
Thanks dear! A big hug 😃🙏🏻
Thank's for Your courage
So nice song
That was very beautiful! How did they figure out how the song went?
Well, there’re notes on the inscription
You are great, your voice, your play everything! But just one comment (constructive I think) don't laugh while you are singing. It is an epitaph, a song that a broken hearted man wrote for his deceased wife, and the lyrics do also denote sadness and vanity.
Hi dear, 😃
Thanks for your comment, but you're really out of context. I'll explain you;
Do you know what the real name of this song?
Not. Nobody knows. It's always known as "the epitaph of Seikilos".
But thinking like that is a mistake. The song maybe could be called "while you live shines" Ὅσον ζῇς, φαίνου. That is a phrase from the song.
So, it's precisely the smile and happiness of our arrangement of the "Seikilos Epitaph" makes it special version. This song was discovered in an epitaph, does not mean is a funeral march.
Also, could be a cheerful way to say goodbye to a person you love.
In this video, the audience is singing with us; while you live shines.
The words and feelings of the music should not be tied to the conditions of the messenger. A warm hug. And thanks again ❤️
@@YKband Hi! Thanks for your answer. I am greek so I know very well what it means. It means in an abstract but accurate translation " live your life as much as you can, because you will die one day" and he writes it full of regret that he did not do so, and now his beloved one is gone. Anyway, I guess that if it works for you like this, you know much better. It just did not work for me when I heard the words accompanied with a smile. Best wishes and stay safe!
And just one minor addition. As you said noone knows the name but it was called "the epitaph of Seikilos" because it was found on the tomb of Seikilos wife written by him.
