  • The boardwalk, the coaster, sun, sand, and surf--it's Vacationland USA. Our cameras have been rolling since the 1950s, capturing all the newsworthy events Mission Beach has to offer. Crowded and rowdy holidays, waves crashing over the boardwalk during an intense storm, flooded Mission Boulevard, the Giant Dipper, and Hamel's--servicing the community since 1967--this is a fun, nostalgic trip to the past of what Larry Himmel called San Diego's most colorful beach town.

Years before Hamel's, In 1962, my family lived in the slum that was South Mission Beach, bay side. Roaches, rats, 40 year old shacks with no parking provided except on the empty lots. It stank of seaweed rot and sewage from the undeveloped bay. Mission Bay was a swamp/marsh made of black muck. Belmont Park was our Oasis on the Ocean. We lived on Vanity Court. Attended Mission Bay Elementary . Dad was a Bellman and Mom, a switchboard Operator at the Islandia Hotel so walked to work. The bay was clear as crystal over there.

Found Mission Beach in 1983. I woke up the next morning and checked if I had donkey ears because I had so much fun.

Having been born and raised in San Diego, 1966 my friends and I would take the bus to Belmont Park and rent a surfboard from the surf shop that was catacorner from Belmont and trade off all day. Back then the sailors in the Navy dominated Belmont Park and the girls would hang out to meet them. Miss those old days, later I bought a surfboard from the Hamel Brothers when they were making surfboards. Good times at the Beach !!

weekends and holidays if you lived there you didn't move your car, left it parked. Best day for the locals was Labor day weekend because all the tourist went home. All of a sudden you could recognize most of the faces
