Kat it isn't he same, look it up on Google earth, the sea is drying up, the trailers in the salt ponds have been tractored down, the rusty steel cars and fences have been recycled and the sea level is at least 10 feet lower (I am thinking 15 but it is hard to tell). The town of Bombay beach is still there and a few of the original people but this video is about 20 years old now and after 20 years it is sort of a ghost town, lots of empty houses and trailers. It is a sad remembrance of a resort town that once was. Salton Sea is was a unique accident with a short lived life that I got to see the end of in the 1980s. For over 30 years now there has been all sorts of studies and talks of what to do with it and it appears the answer is just let it dry up and the silt from the sea bed blow into So Cal. The new talk is salt marsh beds across the bottom of the sea bed to save the birds.
Doing nothing is not an option. The pollutants in the dried lake bottom are causing health problems blowing into in San Diego, and the problem is growing.

This originally aired in 1999. I’m so curious to see the sea now Edit : I just went. The art installations are cool but the town looks like it has seen better days. Makes me sad to think how these old timers would feel about it now. I am assuming most of them have passed
Happy you made a second trip. I’ve been wanting to go. I would love to see this for myself to appreciate the beauty of it. I’m also very passionate about the deserts so this place seems like a hidden gem That needs some love to shine.
Have been to all 50 states, HI, Alaska Included. Extensively. Been thru-out Canada. Born and raised in Los Angeles. Somehow never made it down to these wonderful lands. Known of and about Salton Sea/Slab City for quite some time. Used to watch Huell and California's Gold every chance I got. Still love the shows. Don't recall this episode but its nice to come across. Also thank you for giving the original air date, and in fact, the description didn't have it. Any of Huell Howsers old shows I still watch when i see em'.😎✌peace.
@@walterwhite1 I am not sure how the town is still there. Some of the locals do go swim in the sea but I didn’t really see a single soul outside in the town. It’s super far removed from other towns / businesses.
Coincidentally, I watched this episode today (May 25th) on Memorial Day, which is also my dad’s birthday. And the air date (August 27th) is the date that my dad passed away. I guess it’s pretty fitting as the episode deals with a lot of death from the fish skeletons to the locals dying off to the dead town itself. I’m sure that Wayne “Wacko” and Leigh(sp?) are likely dead by now. And we know Huell is no longer with us.
Carlos Rincon Sorry for your loss. I’m watching this today, day after you did 🙂 To me, 21 years ago doesn’t feel like it was that long ago. I couldn’t help laugh at his face when the lady he interviewed told him if he put out info that contradicts the media about Bombay Beach “you’re a dead duck” LOL
God, this place is so cool. I visited Bombay Beach in 2014, but I didn't realize there was so much there. I just went to the area with the corroded bus and the flooded out "dinner house". There were also a couple of mostly-intact houses with old newspaper clippings, clothing/furniture, and writing on the wall. One of the coolest things I've seen is written on one of the walls, "Mother Nature Vs. Capitalism".
I was just at Bombay Beach, two weeks ago. I wish I had seen this video before to have some reference. This place is like a ghost/zombie town, now. It doesn’t smell bad at all, but it feels creepy because of all the abandoned homes, graffiti, etc. It’s still very unique place to visit. It’s so hot over there, even with the wind.
The sad part is with my alarm company I still go and do fire inspections at the local day care. The kids have the highest asthma in the country here. So sad and depressing
What a wealth of knowledge Wayne is, a kindly man, who went out of his way, with tales so vivid you can picture this place in your own imagination. Happy go lucky people, is where l would want to live, a great community. The hardware store "We don't got it, you don't need it".😁
I wish someone would take over this show, it was the best! I think what made it different was how Huell would talk to random people and next thing you know they were co hosts!😂
Part of Huell's classic 'Desert Trilogy' of the Salton Sea, Amboy Crater and Newberry Springs videos done several years back for his various tv programs on California PBS. Huell shows us around Bombay Beach, located on the Salton Sea led by some local characters. Gives us all an idea of what it's like to live there, at least a little bit of an idea,, and what we can do to improve things. The area has been struck with some nasty hits from mother nature, from fish die offs and floods to regular visitors and campers not returning to this once popular resort area. A once leading summer 'place' (mostly winter, summer was too hot) for Californians as you can see today the place is down and out. Although the locals, and for once Huell who always tends to stay out of these kinds of con jobs from the locals. Clearly there to pitch the place to his fans, the people he interviews go right into promotional gear and start pumping the real estate info thru Huell. Huell, later on, purchased a house nearby, over in Newberry Springs. His main house was in Palm Springs, his secondary house in LA. He also owned a place at Amboy. So, in a way, he's beating the drum for his own benefit. The locals who gloss over the hazards of the Sea and of living near don't do us any favors. The area is mostly populated by folks like these. If you come to see the place, you can easily find them. Huell lets us know about the Sea and people who are there. That was several years ago. Since then the place hasn't gotten any better and the Sea is facing some serious actions to make it good again. The Sea was major rec area after the War and continued on until the 70s when it just died off. Hundreds of thousands would visit it each year, mostly with RVs but some took the family station wagon loaded with the kids and listening to Del Shannon sing 'Runaway', others flew into its small local airport while many, a lot really, took the old Southern Pacific Special Train from San Diego, LA, SF and Orange County and stayed at local hotels who had stay & eat & play deals with them for taking the train.
I was just there last week. It is mostly abandoned. Saw one person outside. It was very hot, however. Looked like a zombie apocalypse. Some very unique artwork. Huge amounts of lithium, used in EV, has been discovered nearby(40% of the worlds supply). This could revitalize this small community and bring jobs to this area.
Good show Huell, thank you KCET...... I seen this back in the day, we been there a few times, I was young than, Now I'm 74......... I really much cared for the area in of it self: we were more about camping out on the Colorado River.
Been to the Salton Sea several times. Beautiful? Sort of. Walking on the "crunchy sand" freaks you out once you realize it's fish bones. Swim in it or eat the fish? Not a chance in the world.
I lived in L.A. (the Valley), from 85-94. I stumbled across Huell on RUclips a week ago and had forgotten all about him. I remember watching KCET and LOVING it when Huell appeared. He treated everyone so kindly. I miss him.
I LOVE the Salton Sea! Bombay Beach is now full of big art. Winter, time for my yearly visit pretty soon! I like Salton City more, but the whole sea is cool.
WHO FROM DLTZK
before you threw some punches you told me get your rings
ik i wasnt the only one🔥
JANE*
Good old Huell! He is at the Hellscape known as the Salton Sea,and Slab City before it was over run by nuts and druggies! i wish Huell was still shaking hands too long and pushing his mic into people's face,he was AMAZING!!!
And strong arming people to answer his questions!
Love Mr Howsers outlook. Old town USA ❤
This originally aired in 1999. I’m so curious to see the sea now
Edit : I just went. The art installations are cool but the town looks like it has seen better days. Makes me sad to think how these old timers would feel about it now. I am assuming most of them have passed
Happy you made a second trip. I’ve been wanting to go. I would love to see this for myself to appreciate the beauty of it. I’m also very passionate about the deserts so this place seems like a hidden gem
That needs some love to shine.
So how bad has it gotten since 1999?
@@walterwhite1 I am not sure how the town is still there. Some of the locals do go swim in the sea but I didn’t really see a single soul outside in the town. It’s super far removed from other towns / businesses.
Do you know what happened to Jane the cook at the ski inn and Wayne?
Release Date: 27 August 1999 (USA)
Thank you
I watching this almost 20 years later I'm going to visit this place
Tony Rios just went today. A lot has changed, a lot is the same. One of the greatest places to visit in a lifetime.
The Salton Sea was a big part of my childhood in the 70s. It is very sad what it has become.
the hell zeke be watching
😂
Same here! (we were there last yr too)
So looking forward to experiencing this Unique place this year. I am a New Yorker.
I camped out there for a night and night time was I started smelling the rotten egg smell. So bad.
I like how everybody says how great it is to live there. Yeah ok buddy lol.
Loved this place...weird, unique...glad I got the opportunity to check it out!
Frailty
The sad part is with my alarm company I still go and do fire inspections at the local day care. The kids have the highest asthma in the country here. So sad and depressing
I miss Huell and his great show.
Huell would have considered a job as a war correspondant. This dude can make hell look like Key West.
Crurned haha
He had me spend an hour watching a pen collectors convention. Thats serious talent right there!
What a wealth of knowledge Wayne is, a kindly man, who went out of his way, with tales so vivid you can picture this place in your own imagination.
Happy go lucky people, is where l would want to live, a great community.
The hardware store
"We don't got it, you don't need it".😁
Can we get some divers to give us a view of the underwater life at Salton Sea (Bombay Beach)?
They have gone in to recover airplanes. It’s super dark.
I was just there yesterday and it is beautiful. Stunning ❤️❤️🤟🏻🥰 hopefully we can find a way to fix the Salton Sea.
I wish someone would take over this show, it was the best! I think what made it different was how Huell would talk to random people and next thing you know they were co hosts!😂
is there a reason jane remover sampled this?
Hundreds of thousands would visit it each year, mostly with RVs but some took the family station wagon loaded with the kids and listening to Del Shannon sing 'Runaway', others flew into its small local airport while many, a lot really, took the old Southern Pacific Special Train from San Diego, LA, SF and Orange County and stayed at local hotels who had stay & eat & play deals with them for taking the train.
jane remover reference!
I seen this back in the day, we been there a few times,
I was young than, Now I'm 74......... I really much cared for the area in of it self: we were
more about camping out on the Colorado River.
Been to the Salton Sea several times. Beautiful? Sort of. Walking on the "crunchy sand" freaks you out once you realize it's fish bones. Swim in it or eat the fish? Not a chance in the world.
Most beaches are made from dead sea creatures. So are rural roads all over Florida.
3:29,huell he is telling you to shut up!love this episode.
Wow, 20 years later, not much changed
JANE REMOVER
Mr. California 🏖
I always enjoyed watching that show
I lived in L.A. (the Valley), from 85-94. I stumbled across Huell on RUclips a week ago and had forgotten all about him.
I remember watching KCET and LOVING it when Huell appeared. If i recall correctly his show was titled "California's Gold". Not sure if i also saw his "Visiting" show back then or not. Loved this guy. Miss you Huell.
18:18 “What is this?”...crunch, crunch...
That’s how untouched beaches are,
shells and skeletons,
all sun bleached and broken down by the tumbling in the waves.
And then sand blasted on the shore by the wind.
God Bless Ya Huell!
1:30 is that Cheech Marin, Huell is interviewing ? Miss Heull's fantastic Cal Gold shows RIP brudda
he was driving too fast i couldn't tell
What is up with the Starwars music at the end?! - this is comedy gold.
