- A guided walking tour of San Diego's Ocean Beach neighborhood. Ocean Beach is a really funky beach neighborhood in San Diego that is full of hippy culture, flower power, and antique shops! We'll tour the Ocean Beach Pier, Ocean Beach's Commercial District on Newport Avenue, and finally the beach itself.

Hey
San Diego is the best place to live. Loved it when Lived there
San Diego *is* America's finest city after all :)
I am originally from OB. Even though I moved when I was 8 years old. It still feels like home when I go back.
I left in 2010 and am still homesick. I lived in one of those little cottages by the pier.
I lived a couple blocks from the OB pier 1988-1990. Moved there straight out of college in Oklahoma! Just spent a couple weeks there in April with my wife who had never been. I have been to a lot of beach "towns" and this is by far my favorite especially if you have a beach loving pooch. Friday $1 oysters overlooking the beach and pier. Awesome! The Pacific Shores had $1 well drinks all day and night!
Dog Beach is pretty great for the pooches! :)
Thanks for another great walking tour, Chris. You are to be commended not only for bringing us these entertaining presentations, but also for your indomitable and unsinkable spirit under pressure. Your courage to not give up on your traveling passion, and supporting your growing family doing what you love to do, and are great at, even in these trying times, is truly praiseworthy. 👏🏻
Aww. Thanks NothingMaster.. I think that's the first time I've heard my spirit referred to as "unsinkable" -- reminds me of the game battle ship! As always thanks for the positive note!
SO MANY WONDERFUL MEMORIES GREAT VIDEO THANKS
I lived in OB for 3 years and loved it. I wouldn't describe it as a hippie town but it does have that element to it. It's more of a mixed bag of every kind and every age group
I used to go to the yearly Geriatric Surfers pancake breakfast on the pier. You can't beat $2.00 Mimosas. It was probably for a good cause but if the champaign is $2,00 a cup I'd drink to Stalin's birthday.
I love driving down to San Diego from Los Angeles 🙌🏼
It's a great drive.. especially along the coast highway!
I live on Michigan and once lived in OB and worked for the James Gang in the 1980’s.
Miss it!!! Just yesterday I saw a OB window sticker on a car here in Michigan and it made me smile
Neat!
Looks like a great day. Thanks as always
Thanks Claire!
Good video! This is where I live so it was nice to see
Very cool!
Very enjoyable walking tour video of Ocean Beach. As always you give us a great tour and its feels like we are right there. Beautiful day for your shoot. Definitely can see the hippy vibe. Thanks Chris
Thanks Colleen!
Hi Chris. Nice walking tour. Nice to see that the community didn't let the big companies take over. I like to enjoy the local foods wherever I go. Thanks for sharing and take care.
Thanks James.. yup. Just Starbucks :)
Very nice. Thank you!!! I posted a video of a sandy beach on the shores of the Arctic Ocean. People are sunbathing. Happy viewing
6:33 - When I was a kid in the 70s, I used to go that movie theatre all the time.
8:30 - Yes indeed, OB today feels very similar to OB in the 70s.
10:44 - I discovered comics in OB! (Though that was like 20 years before Galactic Comics existed.)
15:34 - For people with mobility issues, or just anyone who wants to avoid the staircase, there's a stairs-free access to the pier if you hang a left right after the South Beach Bar.
I feel like I've driven on that beach a million times in Grand Theft Auto V.
Very cool walking tour Chris! 👍
Hah. Right on :)
THANKS FOR THE BEAUTIFUL WALK
Thanks Linda!
Love your channel ! Beautiful day in sunny SD !!
Thanks j b!
Born and raised ! Awesome ... Video aces tattoo shop the black and many more the big christmas tree still there ? Last of the hippy genration !!
Hey just got to your video. Love it Chris!
Thanks Tri!
My second home. The Bullfrog Burrito was to die for at the now present Mike's Taco Club location. The Little Chef had amazing gyros back in the day. The black-lighted Pac Shores is special too. And don't forget Patsy Cline playing on the jukebox at Tony's!!! Peace out.
I tell people OB is where the Dead Heads meet the New Age people. I lived there back in the late 80's/early 90's. It's where I lived when I had my Native Californian. 😉 I've lived many places and always call OB Home. I miss it so very much. Thanks for the tour! (And I can't get a decent carne asada burrito anywhere else!)
Wonderful tour, Chris! You did us proud. From your old Obcean
friends, Stevi and Ted👍😎
Thanks Ted and Stevi! Glad you enjoyed this one :)
Liking OB's vibe!
Nice tour. I had a good bowl of pho and wings, there and it was great bringing back memories. If I only started doing videos of all the places I’ve been 12 years ago, I’d be in a completely different place!
Mmm.. pho and wings!
As a lifelong OBecean, I wanted to say thanks for the video highlighting our little town. You would have really impressed me if you had mentioned that the opening sequence of the movie Almost Famous, those images are various spots throughout Ocean Beach and the very first dialogue when Frances McDormand's character is holding hands with her son discussing to Kill a Mockingbird was filmed in front of what was once The Strand Theater. I didn't hear you mention the farmer's market that happens every Wednesday, if you did, my bad. If anyone does go into the tide pools then please remember to enjoy what you're seeing but don't take any of the creatures when you leave. One other trick about Hodad's, to avoid the lines, you can get your order to go and make your way down to the beach to enjoy your food.
Hi Dan. Thanks for the addition for the farmers market and the tip on Hodads!
I love living in OB and I hope the pier can be saved.
I hope so to Kristin!
Nice job. I'm an obecian and you represented us well. I have a few videos on our farmer's market and early morning walking tours
Sweet! Thanks Jon!
1982 I lived with 2 gals in the apartments with 2 hot gals I was 21. Oh to be young again. 63 now but enjoying life. Upstairs apartment the big windows above the old pharmacy. You even showed the doorway to the stairs! Thanks
See those little cottages at 17:42 I used to live in one of those. Not the ones you see, there are about 20 of them, built in 1912.
Neat
I live in San diego and the shoreline is always like this especially in torrey pines
@Ridham Govind I visited a childhood friend of mine when he moved to Del Mar in the Summer of 1974 and went to Torrey Pines High School in the Fall. The beaches there are beautiful.
Nice walk! Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks Ed and Vedda!
I can smell the waffle cones. They are so very good. As was this visit to OB very good.
Mmmm. Waffle cones...
I really like how Ocean Beach does not have any chain restaurants (besides the Starbucks) to help out the local businesses. Ocean Beach looks pretty nice! It's too bad that the pier was closed that day, but I'm sure the views from the end would be fantastic!
Yeah.. apparently the pier is closed for awhile due to repairs.. ya know. City repairs ain't the fastest thing :)
We have Jack-in-the-box on Voltaire and several small chains including Cohen and Yeng restaurants.
Oh I need to go back to SD. All love from Sweden!
Zlatan 🇸🇪
Wow...
Thanks Chris. You made my day 😁. Hopefully one day I could visit the 🇺🇸 especially California 😂
I hope so too!
Very nice
Thanks Leesa!
the starbucks is in a historic building. it was the Italian Bank or some such. there were once a lot of Italian immigrants in San Diego
Walked right past the Vets Memorial without saying a word.
I have been to OB a few times, taking the bus from Oceanside where I lived for 2 years. How I wish I could find an affordable room for long-term stay there. I am based in the Philippines for now, setting up my ecohome next to our city's ecopark (might do an "OB theme" for it). I hope to be able to be back in San Diego for some R&R.
That sounds like a long bus ride. What's your favorite part about OB?
*_Ocean Beach lies on the Pacific Ocean at the estuary of the San Diego River, at the western terminus of Interstate 8. Located about 7 miles (11 km) northwest of Downtown San Diego, it sits south of Mission Bay and Mission Beach and directly north of Point Loma. The O.B. community planning area comprises about 1 square mile (742 acres), bounded on the north by the San Diego River, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the east by Froude St., Seaside St. and West Point Loma Boulevard, and on the south by Adair Street._*
What month was this video taken ? I'm going here in October and I'm wondering what clothes to pack..
Great video, can you swim at the beach?
Yup!
This tour is very misleading. Saying that OB has a 60's and 70's vibe shows that he is not familiar with Ocean Beach in that era. I'm 77 and lived there in the 60's nd 70's when it was really a funky beach town. I loved living there. Hodad's was on the beach. The Strand theater was still showing flicks. The "Spaceman" was a local character. McMillian's market was where you did your food shopping. Rent was affordable. I had a three bedroom , two bathroom house with a garage on Saratoga 2 blocks from the beach for $175 a month. It is so comercialized now it is almost unregonizable with all that touristy junk being peddled.
No one asked I’ve lived here 10 years and love it all the same
Are there any long term parking options in Ocean Beach?
Hmm... not that I'm aware of
So messed up looking at this video as always Chris finds something new especially in SD and when he gets to the end my wife and I see the pier and realize we were there in June and lived this place just didn’t realize it was Ocean Beach... east coast people!!
Hah!
Jack in the Box is acceptable for OB, it was founded and headquartered in San Diego
Don’t skip all the breweries in OB, there’s a wide variety.
Thanks for the tip Kristin!
Definitely a nicer beach than Venice.
Quite a bit!
Is the Street parking free?
Yes
Lived on Mentone
It's not every day you
get a tropical storm in San Diego
For sure Kevin!
It would have been even better if you could tell us why a certain portion of that pier is fenced off and the public is forbidden to go beyond the point of the fence.
If you do that, I'll give you a thumbs up and I'll subscribe.
Because the pier was damaged by high waves during a storm... It's reopened now up to the pier cafe... but the end is still closed off
Hey, thank you for that. I'll hit subscribe and thumbs up.
Is San Diego better to visit than Los Angeles...?
If you like beaches, yes
The "Black" is historic lol
Hodad's IS WAY BETTER than in and out ,😂 you are not a real obecian if you don't believe that
SUMPTUOUSLY! Thank you. I posted a video of a sandy beach by the sea in the north of Russia. Happy viewing)
lol jah healing isn't a church its a dispensary collective
Hah! That makes sense
You lost all food credibility when you rated in and out burger over Hodad's!😣👎 but its your opinion and you stay true to it
And it's definitely still my opinion :)
@@YellowProductions congrats on your opinion
What's with all the masks outside!!!😓👅😃
Some people feel safer wearing a mask, even outside. It 's not a political thing, it's their preference.
Dude, you look super awkward.
Look i know that yellow is your trademark, but I think we can cut you some slack on the beach.
Just be glad it wasn't a Yellow speedo! :)
