      Haha yea!! I started with one pond… then 2…then 3….maxed out at 4! After a while I stopped isolating every time because they breed so fast. Mainly I isolate about once per summer. After those fry grow out a bit I mix them. Lifespan is 2-3 years so like to do it to keep them around.

The only thing is that it's been way too hot for them to live outside, so I would have to wait for it to cool down a bit. I might even keep one in my room next to the window! I hangout out with them everyday for a while & when I notice a mama fish has eggs one day, and then she doesn’t the next, it is a good time to carefully pull a plant with the same water or at least 50-60% of the same water it came from. Do you have to treat the water for these fish?

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  4 года назад +2

      Yes and no.....you have to dechlorinate the water. You can buy water treatments and add it to the water before you put it in. Or the easier method is to have a refill bucket that you let sit out for about 1-2 days and the chlorine will eventually evaporate away making it safe for the fish. Thanks for the comment!

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for the comment! I feed my fry special food made here in Japan which is a very fine powder. I would suggest grinding up the feed you have smaller. Also don’t over feed them, just like any other fish. Once a day is what I do. Be sure to separate them from other bigger fish as they will eat the fry. Also try not to do any water changes even if the water gets green. They love it! New fry are very sensitive to water change and Not until they get a little bigger is when I would change water. If water gets low I just add some dechlorinated water to top off the bowl. In all honesty I don’t do much! Thanks again!

      Hi, I'm having the same problems raising fry, even getting some of the eggs I purchased here in the UK to hatch. I seem to get some swimming for a day or so and then lose them. So far I have 2 out of 12 eggs (after one week plus a day) that I bought that are swimming, one swimming for one week, then losing three of the first hatched, one just hatched today. I get so discouraged. They arrived in Methylene Blue, four had hatched in the tube they were posted in. I lost two of those a day or so afterwards. I don't know if I should have kept the remaining eggs in Meth. Blue until they have hatched. I think I see a couple of eggs died in hatching. It is so stressful...and expensive when they don't make it. Water Hyacynth is banned in the EU due to how it clogs riverways. I think it is the best plant for the purpose as I think the roots carry minute organisms for the fry to live from until they can eat the Hikari First Bites. I may try Water Lettuce when some other Medakas that I have from another seller start to spawn, as it floats as well. I bought them as juveniles already so they are strong. Good luck.

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  4 года назад +2

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  4 года назад +3

    I have platnuim medaka and they dont seem to want to breed and I can't tell if they're even females and males because there is 0 color difference between them. Any advice on how to sex them beyond color?

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  4 года назад +1

      Hey thanks for the comment! Honestly speaking that is a hard question. I am sure you have tried looking around on the internet for answers and cant find any....just like I have as well. Some research has shown Medaka can actually change their sex! But that usually happens more in wild medaka. That being said medaka breed almost non stop and produce spawn very rapidly. Likewise they are cannibalistic and will eat the spawn. Make sure you have at least 2 or 3 floating plants and check them for eggs almost everyday. Even if you don’t see any eggs separate and rotate one or two of the floating plants into a separate jar with the same water they came from, every 2 or 3 days. If this isn’t working I would say try to pick up a few more fish from your seller and try to see what they say as they would know the specifics of the medaka you have more closely than I would. Thanks again and hope this helps!

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  4 года назад +1

      I would also say watch your fish closely as you may see them carrying egg under their back fins! If you see eggs it will be on a female. Then do the plant rotation I told you about and you should see spawn in no time.
