I've not really been interested in these fish until this video! I had no idea about their egg distribution technique. THAT is whats piqued my interest! I love thos mop idea, and find it wonderful how its made its way around the world, and into my little house! Dean is certainly much closer than you Blake- no insult intended, but California is much closer to Virginia than Australia! With that said, now I'm very interested in Medaka's, and hope to have an outdoor tub of them next year!!! Thank you so much Blake!
Amazon has pads for $6.00 for 10 and a pool noodle now is 1 dollar at dollar General in the California USA. Bought my fish from Quinn's Fins on Amazon..5 Black Medaka. I wrote to him that I wanted females and the order had 2 females and 3 males. 30 days after receiving them the Mop showed 1 egg this morning. Update: 16 hatched so far.
I'm not into breeding fish but floating mops are a great idea for breaking line of sight of aggressive fish. Thank you for sharing the pool noodle idea
It doesn't come from either... its a style mop that japanese breeders and keepers have been using way before both. tulle fabric mops also pretty common and work well also
@@BlakesAquatics Are you up late with the little fulla. Take heart. They only keep you awake at night until they're in their 40's.😂. Mine still give me sleepless nights and they're in their 30's.🤗
Just bought 4 today. Had also just fully emptied n scrubbed n cleaned out my old hillstream loaches tank now they’ve all been sold off. Had loads of cyanoB algae so this was a real mission. Set up with contro soil and scaped with Seiryu Rock, Monte Carlo and hair grass. Kinda a Iwagumi scape which I’ve never had before as I like a fair bit of plant in my tanks usually. I did although decide to add 2 am to medium Heromanii Swords late this eve as I felt the fish just won’t have plant matter to swim thru n around (I tend to scape for for the fish needs n likes no just for some specific “well known scaping style”. I want the fish to feel happy and in a interesting environment. I will try this method of mop, I always attempt to breed every species of fish I own and have done well with over 9 species so far. Its now time for Melaka babies….lol This is the first fish I’ve seen that holds the eggs near it’s ovipositor (I assume) until they soon later deposit. I’m very keen to see them spawning and the eggs etc. I hope the scour pads aren’t too rough , tho I’m assuming after being wet all the time they will loosen n soften slightly. Wish me luck Blake☺️😃💙 Lisa, Perth …W Aust
I recent started breeding these guys and they have definitely replaced the guppy for me. The downside is the nerve wrecking 15-20 day wait for the eggs to hatch.
Hi mate, for what it's worth mine are in water in Scotland 🏴 with no heater its around 14°-21° in my inside mini ponds depending if my heatings on, the laddie i got them from said they live outside under big lumps of ice in the middle of our winters which I'm assuming are a lot colder than Australia 🇦🇺, cheers from the top side 👍🏻
Good video man, now I know to go steal my neighbors noodles in his pool before winter is over. He won't notice me, I will be very sneaky digging them out at night with my pickaxe through the ice. I will leave some for you, it's for the greater good 😃
I’m going to give this a try. I only have have 6 platinum rice fish in a 15 gal. I don’t even know if they are boys are girls. How do I tell the difference?
You can identify male/ female from the shape of the dorsal and anal fins. The male's dorsal fin is thinner and slightly longer (and sometimes has what looks like a split on the tail facing edge). The anal fin is also slightly longer and has a more square shape. The female fins look like the back edge flows in to the body more and the anal fin often has a inward curve shape. If you look at pictures on online you can see visual examples of the fin difference. It is quite subtle but once you learn it, it becomes easier to spot. Of course, once to females start producing eggs then it's super easy! XD
Been trying to get some here on Central Coast NSW for about 6 months and no luck…… can eggs be transported like killi eggs? Anyone know anywhere I can get them locally? 🇦🇺❤️
Sorry off topic..anyone know if seachem pristine kills brown diatom bacteria? My bristlenose wont eat it on the glass anymore but i can wipe that off. Its all in my sand too though and i cant vacuum it out...any help would help. Im new to all this

Good Video....Gretting from Medaka Manufaktur....Germany
Medaka are really satisfying to breed.
A plus is how hardy they are.
I bought 12 Pearl rice fish from Angelfins fish suppliers in Guelph Ontario. The were shipped, packaged well and were fit and healthy on arrival.
Great tutorial! Thanks mate!
Fantastic video Blake! Going to try this on the weekend!! Thanks
Have fun!

Best video on this I've seen. Thak you!
Glad it was helpful!
I've never seen rice fish in shops near me. I like the mop.
Remind me mate are you in Australia? If so hand picked aquatics sell online
I think Dean used that idea from Ryo Watanabe originally also. So thank you for bringing this technique to Australians
Been going around Facebook groups forever
Shouldve known, i love Ryos stuff

Thanks Blake. My rice fish aren't spawning naturally so I'll give it a try. Thanks 👍

1000% they take ages to hatch. If you heat the water they do hatch a bit quicker
Hi Blake , Do these Rice fish survive our cold winters in a pond outside ? , I'm in Melbourne South East , Ta
Yea they do fine year round in Melbourne
Yep year round no issue

Females are more rounded, best bet is to see one carrying eggs an hour after lights come on
Yeah females are chunkier with a straight anal fin, males are skinnier and have an arch (and commonly a split) in theirs.

Hi Blake, any ideas where to get bulkheads from here in au. I'm after about 30 but can't find a good reasonable source
Unfortunately no, ive looked into it plenty myself and came up short.. maybe order from overseas and just wait forever
Are they known to eat the eggs if you don't take them out ?
I like how simple they are to thrive in the setups I've seen.
I find that in the peak of summer they have enough that they dont eat them but in spring/ autumn where there is less eggs they dont seem to hatch
Can u show us how to make a hatching tank, is it just a normal cycled tank that has no live fish in there?
Yeah exactly
Thank you
Will this noddle and scouring pad work for guppy fry?
Guppies give birth to live babies, these will help to shelter them though
Soo I have medaka...and my female had eggs...do the eggs get fertile after she lays them...while she has them attached to her or before eggs apear?
Whilst she carries them

Buy them online from hand picked aquatics, Elyza does a great job 👍
@@BlakesAquatics cool, I’ll check it out, thanks. I am usually hesitant from buying online, unless I get a referral, so thank you 😊

Dont worry about it, it will clear naturally in a couple of weeks
They repriduce asexually right?
Hello, is this in Perth? So hard to find medaka in WA 🥲
Nah I am in Geelong, VIC. WA can be a problem sourcing fish and especially plants
@@BlakesAquatics dang. Thank you. Your videos are great!
@@momotsukino6441a year ago now I know. But did u ever find medaka rice fish… ? I just scored some from city barn Malaga ….
