    I have a group of Youkihi medaka. They're supposed to be a solid orange, but about half of them have a koi pattern. I have a very large group of fry growing out. I plan to try separating out the two color forms for future breeding.
    BTW, the green water in the round bowl is actually good for the fish. It's especially good for any fry that hatch out.
    Due to the harsh winters in Wisconsin, I can't leave my medaka outside year round. The ponds would freeze solid.

    • @Come2JapanDan
      @Come2JapanDan  3 года назад +2

      Your medaka sound beautiful! I would love to have more koi like patterns! Yup
      I have read around that some breeders prefer to hatch their fry in the green water. I have had a thin layer of ice on my ponds but definitely can’t let it freeze solid!! Thanks again for the great comments! I appreciate it!

    Wow great!!! I would love to start with medaka's as well. Right now I have a pond with four goldfish.
    My question with Medaka's seems a little stupid but I do wonder...if the little fish breed so well you have to always separate the fry from the elderly but you can't go on and on putting more containers. In other words how can you prevent inbreeding? I once had a population of guppies that were accumulating so fast certain individuals had developed bend tails😢

    Not sure why you believe soil is needed. Fine pebble gravel would be fine. The fish will feed the gravel. Probably less algae.

    I hope you didn't use gardening soil in your tub for the fish .There are lots of bad things in gardening soil that can kill fish
