I really like the new set up and its good to see you still taking care of these lil rice fish. Sorry, had to watch this a few times because its fascinating to learn and take notes!! Hope you are having a great weekend.
Love this video. Its so nice to be able to see the mini ponds up close, and the video is so clear! One of the videos that helped me make my mini ponds. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Great set up! I absolutely LOVE Medaka rice fish ❤. It’s winter here in Melbourne Australia so mine are sitting very still at the moment.. I can’t wait till spring when I can transfer them into a larger pond I have ready for them! I cannot get water hyacinth here, but have plenty of plants etc.. Nice video thank you!😊
To have an opening from the floating plants I’ve had great luck getting airline tubing and gluing the ends or connecting both ends with a check valve. Always floats and you can make any size or multiple ones for feeding! Great work
I have a group of Youkihi medaka. They're supposed to be a solid orange, but about half of them have a koi pattern. I have a very large group of fry growing out. I plan to try separating out the two color forms for future breeding. BTW, the green water in the round bowl is actually good for the fish. It's especially good for any fry that hatch out. Due to the harsh winters in Wisconsin, I can't leave my medaka outside year round. The ponds would freeze solid.
Your medaka sound beautiful! I would love to have more koi like patterns! Yup I have read around that some breeders prefer to hatch their fry in the green water. I have had a thin layer of ice on my ponds but definitely can’t let it freeze solid!! Thanks again for the great comments! I appreciate it!
I almost never change the water....only replace once it get low. The plant to a great job at filtering so now worries. That being said...you can change it about once every two weeks or so... Thanks again.
I love the simple easy way you did this , no fancy set up either . Wonderful. I have a question? I live in Tucson Arizona, would it be too hot for the Rice fish ? What’s the dimensions of the container ?
You could definitely keep them in Tucson! Just make sure your container is large enough or mainly deep enough so the medaka can swim to the bottom for cooler water! They love the sun but will also need some shade in a hot summer! Not sure of exact dimensions sorry! Best of luck!
No need to get an acrylic ring, just get some nice and straight airline tubing and join both ends with an airline male to male connector and voilà you have a floaty ring thing.
Nice set-ups! How many litres on average are they? I'm on the hunt for some nice shallow round containers like the ones in your video, in the UK for my desktop, but not having much luck!
Thanks for the comment! You can keep Medaka in almost anything! haha! I breed medaka and have kept babies in a old pickle Jar before moving them to something larger. My smaller bowls are about 8-12 liters. One more thing to mention is that Medaka are great Jumpers! If you have something too shallow I would recommend some type of covering to keep them in.
All my Medaka Tanks Outside dont have soil of just like 2cm and I just Stared and stared at the Screen while you were putting like 5 different ones inside one tank😂😂
Hey thanks for the comment! I might do something like that but I haven’t ever kept any fish inside before. One of the main reasons is that medaka love natural sunlight. Even so I might think about a little setup. Thanks for the comment and Idea!
Can snails and/or shrimp be added to take care of the algae? Are there any types that can handle the same weather (overwintering particularly) as the rice fish?
Hey thanks for the comment! I definitely have snails in my setups. Eventually want to add a few shrimp for sure. Kinda depends on your winters. For me in southern Japan our winters aren’t very harsh, rarely below zero ever. Hopefully its helps! Thanks again!
Wow great!!! I would love to start with medaka's as well. Right now I have a pond with four goldfish. My question with Medaka's seems a little stupid but I do wonder...if the little fish breed so well you have to always separate the fry from the elderly but you can't go on and on putting more containers. In other words how can you prevent inbreeding? I once had a population of guppies that were accumulating so fast certain individuals had developed bend tails😢
@@Come2JapanDan Not sure about that. Even I go for google search , I can't find out the result. Might be the genetic problem from medaka.😂Sadly, this white swelling disease slowly killed my medaka.
oh no That’s no good! The only other thing I can think of is maybe a parasite... what is it kept outside? what were the overall conditions of the set up?
@@Come2JapanDan I kept them outdoor ,just with some floating plants and a lily plant. I used green water to keep them. The fish food that I used was Marubeni Nisshin powder. Not many of them will get the disease, but if get, the white swelling part will slowly spread. When I kept the 1st gen be4, they dont have those kind of problem. 2nd gen and onwards all started to have this disease😂
@Come2Japan ok I have 50 fry growing well but currently in a smaller tupperware container, the test is detecting small amounts of ammonia, I'm going to move them into a bigger container, do I need a sponge filter or would plants and small lava stones be enough for beneficial bacteria, and thanks for helping, I will check out your other videos
@DetectiveLopez. I personally would definitely move them to a much larger bowl. Also I have never used sponge filters or lava rock, so I can’t give you any advice there. I just use various water plants and tend to have great results. Medaka are super sturdy so a variety of methods are definitely ok. Thanks again for reaching out!
I live near Tokyo and I have a small patio ceramic pond. Is commercial patio pond soil available?? There is a Joyful Honda near near me with water plants and fish. I have some water plants but they are still in their pots when I bought them several years ago. I would like to replant them into some soil. Also, I want to add Medaka. Right now I have some plants and no fish and horrible, horrible scum or glop, don’t know what to call it, growing all over the surface of the water. I don’t know how to get rid of it. I remove it by hand, but it comes back. Do you have any advice??
Any aqua soil should be fine as that is what i use. Sounds like you have algae. I would say to definitely wash off all of the plants and do regular 50% water changes probably once a week or so to help get rid of it
I wish i can do that here.. the first thing people ask when i try to buy a fish is "how big is your fish tank" And all the lecture of don'ts follow.. and it's frustrating.. honestly i just want a fish to enjoy..
That’s unfortunate… I have heard you can do this with guppies too, but definitely do some research of your own. Thanks again for the comment and best of luck!
@@Come2JapanDan I've used straws, they work okay but things escape sometimes. I think the airline tubing is better. If you used it in the video I apologize I may have missed it.
I basically don’t have to do anything….only make sure the water doesn’t freeze solid and break up the top layer to provide air holes. Medaka are super hardy fish that can withstand a huge range of temperatures.
Love these videos. So chill. Great setup.
Thanks man!
Rice fish are honestly awesome finally got mine to start breeding this season and they have been laying nonstop! Seen my first fry today 😁
