@sohomonkey and dayman. The song was written by me in 1984 and first played live on stage by myself and Chris Yates in the same year. In 1992 Richard and myself made the Amiga version and then the following year recorded the version on this video with myself (voice and guitars), Richard (keyboards) and Graham King (drums). The song was recorded in Joes Garage by John Lambert who was also our sound man for our gigs in 1988.. John invited a friend of his to play sax 'Ian Ritchie' who also plays and tours with Roger Waters of Pink Floyd (hence the amazing Floyd sound)
+Shiek Yerbuti glad you like it.... yes i own copyright, get back in touch if you make money and you can pay me 15% of what you earn from your animation :) good luck
"And on a more serious note: don't try playing this at home, kids, because war is not a game; war, as _Cannon Fodder_ demonstrates in its own quirky little way, is a senseless waste of human resources and lives. We hope that you never have to find out the hard way." -The last words of the instruction manual.
The song was written about being in love, but not expressing it at the time, and on reflection realising too late that you were more interested in and attentive to your own reaction to the situation than that of your lover, who, without the affirmation they needed themselves, decided to move on. It is a song about loss and of course years later when it was added to Cannon Fodder we can reflect much of the loss in the song on fallen comrades in war... and ironically we can also gaze at our reflection in their eyes for entirely different reasons.... only "touching hand and feeling softness..... golden rapture... and... wrapped in the bliss of crying" give the game away that this is a love song.... But that is the beauty of the creative process, how things can shape shift depending on the context in which they are viewed... as the writer I am delighted that the song now has a meaning much deeper than simply me as an 18 year old losing the first girl I loved. These are the lyrics. NARCISSUS (1984) I touched your hand and felt your softness And in your eyes your light shone gently in the darkness But did I really see you clearly? The golden rapture that I knew when you were near me I need you there but now you're gone away Didn't know that you could mean so much to me Didn't know that you could be so one with me But looking back I see what I was meant to see I gazed at my reflection in your eyes And as you left I felt your shadow It wouldn't leave me saying "See you in tomorrow" It whispered "We could last forever... wrapped in the bliss of crying silently together" And when the world is dark my mind is filled with you Didn't know that you could mean so much to me Didn't know that you could be so one with me But looking back I see what I was meant to see I gazed at my reflection in your eyes
+Jon Hare It feels more about Narcissus because of the lyrics "And as you left I felt your shadow It wouldn't leave me saying "see you in tomorrow" It whisper "we could last forever" But in the bliss of crying silently - "together""
+Jon Hare I've always loved this track, but it has gained even more significance to me when I found the vocal version and this explanation. I feel that I've thoroughly failed in my first real romantic pursuit, and it's because I was more preoccupied with my own perceptions than with what that person was all about, really. Powerful, powerful stuff, there.
Fwiw, this is a stunning piece of work standing on its own. It's actually on my regular playlist, via the "Immortal 4" album. Superb bit of vocal work, and the sax is incredible.
This song makes me cry, it's something incredible, I love Cannon Foder, and now knowing the history of the song, it's extremely incredible, I'm not crying out of sadness, it's because it transmits a lot of love.
I was able to eventually beat the game with Jools, Jops and Stoo. No need for remembrance here. Probably times and replays I shoulda spent on studying harder though.
"I gazed at my reflection through your eyes" is imo one of the strongest lines i ever heard, how the singer throught he looked at same eye level of his love, but in reality was too focused at himself to notice the cracks at their relationship, which in turn made it crumble away.
How can you be more "anti war" than with this masterpiece and that hill with crosses all over... I remember so clearly being a 13 y.o. boy staring at the screen, understanding that no, war was no fun at all, not even "full metal jacket" thought me so well.
Greetings from Brazil, Mr Hare. This song means to much to me. War was never been so much fun, but anyway, at that old times, I was a teenager when I listened this melody and I could never imagine the meaning of the lyrics. Now I'm almost 40 and I can understand that this song was written by a brave soldier. Thank you for the inspiration!
Fuuuck, this is my every attempt at at a relationship ever. Honestly. Thing is, I need to learn to love myself before I even attempt to be with someone else. And it's hard... really hard.... I feel that I need someone to finally make me whole, but at the same time I know it's not true. I need to complete myself before I even try to find someone else...
I only came here for the nostalgia of cannon fodder, and i ended up hearing a nice and deep song. And nice job with writing down the lyrics, as far as i can hear they are spot on.
John, this composition is Perfect. Deeps of meaning ost for cf shaped mamy Polish kids back in the 90's. Those MIDI sounds maintain in adult. Thanks you John. Szacun w chuj (master respect in pl)
+soulmyrr Poor Jools, he is still alive and well at the moment. Julian 'Jools' Jameson.....You must be muddling the late great Richard Joseph with him.
Misunderstood communication here! Sensible Software coders, Julian 'Jools' Jameson, and Jon 'Jops' Hare I am referring to. Yes their nicknames are a couple of the troops in the game...but I am referring to the RIP JOOLS comment (not directly in relation to the game). The legendary respected game musician also associated with this game Richard Joseph sadly succumbed to cancer in 2007.
The song predates Sensible Software itself. It was eventually used in Cannon Fodder, rearranged by Richard Joseph, then re-recorded in a proper studio on the outskirts of Dublin by Jops, RJ and Graham King with Pink Floydian sax solos provided by Ian Ritchie. Gives it that Gunners' Dream or Two Suns in the Sunset vibe.
@johnharegames It was a sobering experience the first time i heard this theme while presented with the list of the fallen when i first played cannon fodder I have a deep respect for the way you convey the core message of the game, and it only takes 5, maybe 10 minutes into the game for that gut punch
If Cannon Fodder was remade these days it'd be in 3D, with Jools, Jops, Stoo and the boys being fully motion captured, the music released as a full soundtrack and have a $100 million budget. 😃
That's ok, it is often difficult to figure out the words in the songs. I am glad that we have finally cleared it out. :) Thanks for the gig video, that performance was awesome!
This song originally had nothing to do with Cannon Fodder. It's a song about unrequited love. In the game, it's used on the pre-level screen that fills the hillside with the gravestones of all of your fallen player characters. NGL, kinda tearing up thinking about the both of those things in tandem. As though these were the last thoughts going through a dying vietnam soldier's head as he lay bleeding, deafened by the combat around, knowing his time has prematurely come and he'll never see his beloved back home again.

The sax solo in the coda (performed by Ian Ritchie, a long term associate of Roger Waters) certainly gives the song a vibe like Two Suns in the Sunset, the closing track of _The Final Cut._ In my rear-view mirror the sun is going down Sinking behind bridges in the road I think of all the good things That we have left undone And I suffer premonitions Confirm suspicions Of the holocaust to come The rusty wire That holds the cork That keeps the anger in Gives way And suddenly it's day again The sun is in the east Even though the day is done Two suns in the sunset Could be the human race is run Like the moment when the brakes lock And you slide towards the big truck _(Oh, no)_ You stretch the frozen moments with your fear And you'll never hear their voices _(Daddy, daddy)_ And you'll never see their faces You have no recourse to the law anymore And as the windshield melts And my tears evaporate Leaving only charcoal to defend Finally I understand The feelings of the few Ashes and diamonds Foe and friend We were all equal in the end _"...The head of the US..."_ _...and now the weather. I made love with this song. My ex and I kept listening to it as we watched the sun rise over the horizon in a motel room. Everything was perfect: she came out of the bathroom and me sitting on the bed smoking a cigarette after having sex. She approached with two glasses of white wine and we toasted looking into each other's eyes and kissing. It was an indescribable situation that only this song could express with words and his sax. In that magical moment there was nothing and no one. Just two souls without time and without place.

NARCISSUS (1984)
I touched your hand and felt your softness

But did I really see you clearly?
The golden rapture that I knew when you were near me

One of the best songs in history.
Yes
Rest in Peace Jools and Joops
Better than anything the mainstream / legacy industry gives us today. A song with authenticity.
Jon Hare очень душевно. Спасибо за отличную песню, вспоминаю свою службу под ваш трек
For me this song was always about losing your best friend in the war, knowing you won't see him anymore.
The Sax is amazing, really adds to the song!
Those lyrics are excellent! It's a shame you can't travel back in time to the early 90s and submit it for the CD versions of the game!
+Larry Bundy Jr Fancy seeing you here!

What other video game music do you like Larry?
Didn't expect to find Larry here

To samo. Cannon Fodder chyba moj faworyt z Amigi 500. Wcześniej jeszcze miałem Atari i grałem Henry's House :D
The sax solo in the coda (performed by Ian Ritchie, a long term associate of Roger Waters) certainly gives the song a vibe like Two Suns in the Sunset, the closing track of _The Final Cut._
In my rear-view mirror the sun is going down
Sinking behind bridges in the road
I think of all the good things
That we have left undone
And I suffer premonitions
Confirm suspicions
Of the holocaust to come
The rusty wire
That holds the cork
That keeps the anger in
Gives way
And suddenly it's day again
The sun is in the east
Even though the day is done
Two suns in the sunset
Could be the human race is run
Like the moment when the brakes lock
And you slide towards the big truck
_(Oh, no)_
You stretch the frozen moments with your fear
And you'll never hear their voices
_(Daddy, daddy)_
And you'll never see their faces
You have no recourse to the law anymore
And as the windshield melts
And my tears evaporate
Leaving only charcoal to defend
Finally I understand
The feelings of the few
Ashes and diamonds
Foe and friend
We were all equal in the end
_"...The head of the US..."_
_...and now the weather. Tomorrow will be cloudy with scattered showers spreading from the east... with an expected high of 4000 degrees Celsius."_
Simply awesome, brings a tear to my eye. even though I'm no soldier ;)
