  • After a failed attempt at chukar and quail up at the higher elevations at the Sierra foothills I change locations down toward the middle of the valley where I find a monster covey in a thick area.

    Older video I know but bro, invest in an O/U shotgun. Yeah it’s only two rounds, but it never jams. Your gun loaded with three becomes a “single shot” at times when it jams and from what I’ve seen sometimes in your videos. The o/u “field” grade guns from Beretta (I’m biased) are light weight. Besides, “gentlemen” and Kings hunt with o/u doubles. 🤔😜

    • @TheRoamingHazard

      I don't think I've hunted with the 1100 in at least 3 seasons. It's an 81 and over the years I just shot the snot out of it and at this point it's just shot out. I'd like to have a gunsmith rebuild it into working order for sentimental reasons but it'll never be in a primary hunt role gun. I've been using a 12g Franchi Affinity and now since my father passed his Benelli 828u. I started the dove and quail season last year with the 828 and love the gun but after some altercations with dumpers in some areas and the abundance of cartel pot farms in the desert I decided it wasn't the gun to carry in some areas. So I switched back to using the Affinity for the 3rd shot and topping off reloads in some of these sketchier areas. But the 828u is my go to for dove and quail otherwise. If the terrain wasn't so terrible I'd use it for chukar too but I've literally tossed my Affinity onto lava rock numerous times out chukar hunting. The 828 is a little too nice for the basalt bounce.
      Depending on how I do and how often I get out this year I might take out the 870 for some pump action but idk i really don't like that gun. Fits me terrible and recoil sucks. If I'm gonna miss I'd rather do it with my.410 bolt action where I've got a better excuse for shooting bad 🤣🤣and will bring more satisfaction if I do manage a double or triple.

      @@TheRoamingHazard I hear ya about the marijuana grows (which literally dot the landscape in the Palmdale/Lancaster desert areas) and cartels. Believe me, I saw it first hand in my career that I just retired from. It would piss me off to no end. I’d see them daily from the air and just shook my head. It’s also why I ALWAYS carry a sidearm on me when hunting and…. Some 00Buck and 1 oz slugs in the pocket. I’ve been doing that for decades now. I had a game warden friend tell me once that it was against the F&G code to carry buckshot while bird hunting (because it’s not listed as an approved “method of take” in the regs). However I didn’t care because:
      1) Game wardens never search one’s person physically and
      2) I just didn’t care. The slugs and Buck shot wasn’t used for hunting but for protection against two-legged predators.
      I remember a shoot-out with a DFW Game Warden high and way back in Lytle Creek. He stumbled upon a grow and the illegals shot at him. He fired back, called for help and San Berdo Sheriff rolled in and they went after the bad guys. I forget the outcome now as that was over 20 years ago.
      I also worked on a task force for marijuana eradication in the Angeles NF every year. It’s terrible what’s become of our forests. That’s what people get for voting “blue.” Anyways…
      I also hear ya about the Benelli 828u. Nice looking gun! I hope the vent rib on top hasn’t come lose for you. I also did read about some ejector and bottom barrel firing issues with that model on the internet. I was holding off on buying that model because of those reviews. Hopefully Benelli has rectified those things. Either way, it’s stunningly a beauty of a gun.

Right now I have the stock IC and Mod which with steel are mod and full and then I have the MR and LR Carlson Creamators. I suspect I'll be using the MR for most stuff.

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  3 года назад

      I know people hunt them out in the owens lake. Never been out there. It's an unconventional way of hunting but people spot them with binos and then drive close and sneak up on them using the levees as cover. Can also try the ponds East of Bishop down by the river, but when I checked them out all I saw were stupid coots. There are some small lakes in the valley that can be tried. The ones I have been to basically have reeds completely surround they and you need a kayak of something to get in there and look around. Seen geese on Temeha Res but no boats allowed so I don't maybe the inlet areas above it?

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  3 года назад +2

      It is City of Los Angeles property. They own most the land up there so they can take the water. You are allowed to go on it and do pretty much anything except camp overnight outside of the designated areas. Hunting, shooting, fishing, off roading are good to go. If you overnight you'll need to be in a campground or up toward the base of the mountains where NF or BLM starts.

    Dude it amazes me that you can get quail on your own without a dog. I've tried and it just seems impossible. I usually go with a buddy that has a pointer but for this opener I was on my own and got skunked. Shot just one but never found it in the thick stuff.

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  4 года назад +2

      You got to be your own dog to find them in a sort of way. Going back and forth to the different bushes you think they are in... except your going on instinct and knowledge of the bushes you think they will favor instead of being able to smell them. Something I have found with valley quail is that they are almost always where you saw them land after the flush if there is enough density for them to hide. Gambels like to run away and peel off in singles and doubles until it seems like the covey vanishes. At that point you work your way backwards. And sometimes they are just holding tight and you need to move on of give them a bit to get comfortable to covey up again. That's what I did at the first spot, I just left them.

      Email me at theroaminghazard@gmail.com and doing payment with paypal. The calls are intended for valley quail or gambels quail. I've not heard scaled quail in person before so I'm not sure if the call could be made to work for them. From what calls I've heard online I would say maybe but I don't even know if the sound I've heard is their spring call sound or a fall (hunting season) assembly call.

    • @Raevenswood
      @Raevenswood 4 года назад +2

      @The Roaming Hazard yeah they are probably much higher in elevation earlier in the season. the problem is getting to them when there is snow on the ground. need a good 4wd to get through the snow covered roads. a lot of the time I end up jump shooting ducks at lower elevations. this year I moved to Sacramento so I bought myself a Nevada License and will be hunting Chuks (with lead) over there since it's about 130 miles to decent chukar habitat from here.
