    I just scored the exact same trifecta as you did in the IV yesterday! (Except you shot more than me lol) I know everybody says a quail call is for merely locating birds and ain’t for “calling in” quail, but I continue to defer.
    As I was literally laying down under a bush hoping the doves overhead wouldn’t see me, I use the call I bought from you to call back and forth to a covey of Gambel’s quail that was about 200 yards away at first. After about an hour of this I get up and they’re now 25 yards away looking at me. I ran towards them but instead of flushing they ran ahead and flushed out of range. But hey the call works great!👍🏽

    You're a pretty good shot! You are blessed to have birds in abundance in California. We have Bobwhites in south Georgia, but the population of wild birds have been declining for decades due to farmers' overuse of pesticides.

    Your videos always get me pumped. Getting ready to go out this morning and do a little bird hunting. Awesome hunt, best one on film in my opinion. I solo hunt most of the time as well. I use to think you needed a dog for upland game but you don’t. Keep those videos coming Steve. Thanks again for the great quail call, working like a charm.

    Good video, these are the hunts you live for when it seems everything is going right, though I don't know how long it took. And i did notice that after the shot, the camera stayed on one bush where the bird went down, while you were walking to it and not always looking around. That is a discipline that many don't have and they just keep looking for the next bird and loose the one they shot. A lot of dove hunting finally taught me that lesson.

    I feel you. No dog here and no one to go with so I go it alone. Unless the quail is dead in the air they will hit and run for any cover before they expire. Really hard to find them sometimes. It really is better to have a dog to find them. Sometimes we gotta do both jobs. Once they are hit, I am usually sprinting toward the bush I marked. Looks silly, but imo get there ASAP or they are gone. I'm in So.Cal too so put out an alert if you are looking for some company.

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  2 месяца назад

      Chukar get my blood pumping more when I'm on them but quail are certainly easier to get into and the various spots are closer and more widespread. My preference is to keep pushing and find and accomplish new experiences getting new species in new spots.
      FYI I deleted your other comment. I understand that your eager to get out there and find spots but that's not a question we ask other hunters over public forums. If a spot was named it wouldn't be long before numerous others saw it and decided to go as well. Pretty soon the spot wouldn't be much good anymore for you or others.

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  Год назад

      In Californina? If you are hunting quail or other non migratory ground birds you could probably just follow the regs for air rifles. Which means you can during the general season and you can actually use lead unlike the rest of us. For any migratory bird (doves and waterfowl) the state is stupid and still has not recognized that air powered shotguns are a thing that exist and would be a no go.

      @@TheRoamingHazard Weird, fish and wildlife state: Q: Can I use a big-bore air rifle to hunt big game like wild pigs, deer and bears in California?
      A: No, big-bore air rifles cannot be used for the take of big game species or migratory game birds. However, they can be used to take small game mammals and resident game birds.
      The allowable “methods of take” for big game animals can be found in California Code of Regulations (CCR), Title 14, section 353(opens in new tab). Air guns are not listed as an allowable method of take.
      Note that air rifles are not considered “firearms” in California. Pre-charged pneumatics (PCP) big-bore air rifles use compressed air as a propellant to fire pellets.

      I price them depending by the type of wood and the grain figure in the calls. The simple maple ones with a lanyard were $15 (which I just ran out of). Most of my bastonge walnut calls were $25 and a few of them the had cool knot voids filled with colored epoxy would be about $35. Waiting on more epoxy for some. They all function the same though. Sound wise the $15 calls work the same as any of the others

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  4 года назад +1

      I took the stock off the 1100 and opened up the bolt spring/buffer tube (not sure what to call it on a shotgun). Anyways it was kind of a pain in the rear to do but it was noticeably gummed up in there so I cleaned it up and am hoping that was the issue where maybe all the gunk that worked it's way over the years was causing the bolt to either not go back far enough or not return fast enough every once in a while and cause the shell to get hung up when feeding in. And if this doesn't fix the issue I'll go jail something for 10 days that will... or will anyways actually.

This one was great at one time but I think it's getting shot out or something on it is because it's having FTF issues. Have no clue how many birds it has put down over it's life time but it's a lot. And the gun doesn't shoot 3" either. Out the different 20g ammo I've tried I liked the Kent Steel Dove #6 the best for quail and dove.

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  3 года назад

      For hunting you'll want a longer barrel that ideally has removable chokes. Most hunting barrels are 28" but 26 and 24 are out there as well. The only hunting I've seen done with a short 18.5 barrel is my daughters .410 but that's because it's intended for kids. I'd say use what you got but you'll want a different barrel when you can.
      With all the fires this year I don't think any public areas that aren't ranges are allowing target shooting yet.

    • @TheRoamingHazard
      @TheRoamingHazard  4 года назад +1

      Use the land management layer on caltopo.com (free) or the onx hunt app (paid but more detailed). I do pick up the spent shells. Often I come back for them because recovering the bird I downed is the first priority and easier to lose track of if you take your eye off the location. And inevitably there will be shells that fly off somewhere I can't find them to make up for these ill pick up shells left behind from others so my litter impact is zero or negative. The yellow 20g after shot are a terrible color to find around dead grass too. Red or blue 12g are much easier to find.

      For quail and dove I prefer Kent Steel Dove. The upland fasteel is good too but I think getting the steel dove number 6's on a sale is the better buy.

    Sorry about the previous comment. I've been looking for good areas for quail around my area for a long time. I got excited 😅. Lol. I always end up hunting out in AZ. How much do you charge for your Calls?

      Its OK. It's the only type of comment I do remove though. There's a couple good places over there. For my basic walnut with lanyard they are $25. And then the cooler looking ones or chamber calls, etc are more. I should be adding more calls to my etsy shop which should be in the discription of linked on my channel banner. And if you want advice about places around your area you can email me. I just never discuss it in the comments. The places out there get trashed enough already. I don't show it in the vids but a couple spots out there are gross. The day I catch somebody with a couch in their truck out there ima lose it.
