- Josh takes you step by step through the process of replacing the starter on a 2001 Toyota Echo. It's a tight engine compartment so there are a few tricks he uses but it's definitely doable for the budget mechanic!
This video should apply to the 2000 through 2004 Echo as well as the Yaris.

Thanks for watching! Хобби
This is a great video that takes it slow, one step at a time, and really allows someone who has never replaced a starter on a vehicle of this type to see everything up close and personal. Nice job!
Audio really sucks and its all to quick and done in the dark. But probably the best a guy can hope for these days. Slow down your speech and ad some light and audio and would be much better

I have watched about 200 different tutorial videos on how to replace this exact starter motor on this car... this is by far the best and most informative one I have come across. Apart from me removing the old starter to find the motor factors had supplied me the wrong replacement size and then had to refit the original so I could drive back to get the correct one...... with all the practise I think the actual jobit took me 40 minutes from start to finish. Thank you Budget mechanic.
Thank you for such a kind comment! I’m glad it helped!
Ui
wow I even did this at -20 here in the yukon wow so simple your experience shows thank you
I wasn't able to replace my starter the same way as in the video. The top bolt on my starter was on really REALLY tight. It cracked my 14mm Ratcheting wrench. It was easier for me to go in from the right side with a Ratchet and extension. Just remove the battery and hose on the right front. It's the big right front hose, You can see it being bolted in the right front corner. That should give you enough working space to fit a ratchet and extension to turn the bolt. I needed extra leverage to turn the bolt because it was on very tight, so also bring a long pipe or something similar for the extra leverage. It was relatively easy after that, having a friend to help makes it a lot easier as well. When I say RIGHT SIDE. I mean it's to your right when you are facing the car bonnet when you are working on the car. If you were inside the car driving, it would be to your left from that point of view.
Wow thanks for the feedback, glad you broke yours loose in the end
Great looking footage and detail on the repair. My 2006 Yaris is back in business. Thank-you!
02 ECHO...doing starter this week. Thanks for the tutorial.
I just finished replacing the starter on my 2000 Echo 5 speed. All I did was disconnect the battery, remove the 2 wires, easily removed the lower bolt from the passenger side, and the upper bolt from the drivers side. Nothing from the top except 2 wires. I used a 14mm socket with about 12 inch extension. Both bolts were super easy to remove. I did brace the ratchet against the frame to keep it straight. Different years or automatics may be different? Went easy after I realized that one bolt goes on from the left, and other from the right side. One of the holes on the starter is threaded.
Excellent video and very informative as simple as you can do it. Thank you for your teaching.
Thanks, we need more channels like this!
Just removed my starter today using your video as a guide. Great explanation. However one tip that I have learned is you can get at the top bolt from the bottom with a ratchet. Just use an extension and it reaches perfectly. Saves tons of time and frustration of trying to do it a quarter turn at a time from the top with a box wrench. I also didn’t find it necessary to remove the plastic splash shield under the car. Had the starter out in under 5 minutes once I figured out I could get a ratchet on the top bolt from under the car.
When I work on tight engine compartment I like to take the time to get some room to work, I removed the throttle body and air intake It was really easy to do with more room! Did it on a 2004 Echo
I was gonna comment because I did the same thing. So much easier!
Thank you. I needed to find the starter. I did with the help of your video and after tapping gently got the engine running. 👍🏻
great video, simple and to the point
peter n thank you for the comment! That’s what we’re aiming for.:)
Thanks for the video man! Keep up the good work.
Boardermelodies you’re welcome!
Concise and short tutorial - excellent work and thank you
Thanks 🤙🏽
Great video. Same engine and starter configuration on the Scion xA. I found that if you remove the battery, remove the snorkel and air intake, then there is plenty of room and it is really easy to get at the top bolt on the starter with a ratchet and an extension. Then you can see the bolt, and you won't be dropping your wrench and won't need to remove/replace the bolt by feeling for it.
Also, there are three bolts at the bottom of the airbox that have rubber bushings. If your airbox shakes violently when car is idling and in gear, then you might want to replaces these bushings while you have it apart. The Dorman 49450 wiper mount bushings are a cheap fix.
Awesome that you shared that information!!!! You just made my job so much easier. The bushings at the bottom of the air box......, did that really help????
Thanks for making this. My starter just crapped out and this will save be about 200 bucks.
I Found for the top bolt removal is to remove the airbox hose the rubber one with clamps. It give you more room to stick a regular ratchet in there. I had to use a few extensions but it worked fine
Great video very informative
thank you !! you helped me alot !!
I took off the tubes to the air cleaner.for the top bolt. It was way easier.
had a car that wouldn't start, after watching the video noticed the dropped control cable for the starter. thanks!
was the starter getting power but not turning? was your battery fully charged? was your charging circuit working?
Thank you for preparing me to remove the starter on my 2000 Echo. I was looking at the job from the top side, and it seems like there's no room to work, but thankfully you showed me to work from the bottom also. My starter normally works fine, but occasionally I turn the ignition switch and nothing happens, no clicking sound either. Then on the second or third turn of the switch, it works/starts fine. Again, no clicking. Is this possibly a solenoid issue? I tested the starter relay switch off the vehicle, and it tested fine - both resistance and voltage tests. Oh, and nice video shots in those tight spots while you did the work!
Possible solenoid problem yes. Less likely, but could also be your ignition switch getting back contact inside.
With some cars, there's a starter designed for manual and another designed for automatic transmission. Is that the case with this starter for the Echo,Yaris, xA, and xB? Thanks
I had problems finding the top bolt...the air breather assembly and battery had to be removed completely and the top bolt is found at the opposite side of the bottom bolt. Josh did mention he had more difficulty because of the clutter.
Undercarriage rust or dirt/mud/clay?
well this helped me lol and I had no idea it was that simple and I am a backyarder for many years but this is first toyota ever I owned
Glad to help!
Where would you get a new set of bolts for a Toyota Echo starter?
What size are bolts
Easier still, remove the air intake hoses (2 of them) then you can get a 14mm socket on the upper bolt. No need for wratcheting wrench.
hmm not sure I see what you're saying. But possible I missed something! Is that what you've done on a Yaris before?
Budget Mechanic In Hawaii on a 2003 Echo. 14mm socket with 6"-8" extension. Gives you plenty of room. Must remove both air hoses to and from the air filter box.
@@jackpoirier5023 Good call! I removed the lower half of the air box as well. Plenty of room with a deep socket and a 2" extension.
Yeah, I tried removing the radiator feed first and then realized that was not enough space, and then i removed the air hoses from the throttle body and air cleaner which made it much easier. 14 mil socket and an extension let me get right on the bolt and plenty of room to turn it. Much easier to do it that way.
Thanks ill try that
Art Toyota echo was driving just fine and then we parked it at home and now it will not start we have tried to jump it we have also checked all the fuses I even tried replacing the main starter relay fuse nothing has solved my problem is it possible that the starter could have gone out without giving me any kind of signs Before hand like grinding or anything?
Yes it is possible, if the starter stops spinning in just the right spot on some failing brushes it won’t fire the next time. Often tapping on the starter in this situation will get it started. If possible check out your battery to make sure it’s not that
Helps to have skinny arms like you do. I can't fit. Will have to remove the airbox etc...
I finally did this job. Thanks again for the video!
Thank you so much
You're welcome 🤙🏽
Thank you
I can't find no tab I have no idea where it's at
I have a friend who stripped his top bolt. Any recommendations on how to go about removing it now?
Ouch! That's a pain! Hopefully he can get the starter out again and there's enough of the bolt sticking out to grab with vice grips etc. he's also probably going to have to remove a lot of stuff around the starter to make room to work
I was afraid of that. I am planning to head over and give him a hand in a couple weeks. Any recommendations on tools needed besides a small pair of vice grips maybe a pipe for torque?
tdelaney01 a pipe couldn’t hurt!
irwin stripped nut remover tool set, they have multiple sizes to grip the bolt. Patience you will get it out.
Gah! I was so confused. I though the top bolt thread in the same direction as the bottom bolt and I was going crazy because I couldn't feel it. Gotta try this on my 2003 Echo. It's only cranking when the engine is completely cold, so might indicate an issue with the solenoid/starter if it's heat resistance that's causing my issue.
Both bolts should be threaded in the same standard direction, I hope the video wasn't confusing!
@@BudgetMechanicHawaii I think they changed the direction of the bolts for 2002+ which maybe why the other dudes suggested removing the air intake hoses. I found this great link with a bunch of diagrams. Looks like the shop manual for the Echo: caphector.com/atoyota/techinfo.toyota.com/ileaf/02toyrm/02toypdf/02rmsour/2002/02echorm/st/star/inst.pdf
This video it is so help full but i diced to remove the battery for better and faster bold remove.
Great vid. Worked the charm up until I found the top bolt had be cross threaded and the head snapped off. Now it’s pretty much welded to the car and idk what to do lol.
:O Unfortunately you will need to take off the front clip and a bunch of surrounding parts so you can get access to the bolt in order to extract it using various techniques. It's no fun. Good luck!
Cant get M14 bolts undone
You must need more brand new tools!
Echo is the same yaris
Do you only drive Toyotas in Australia? ha
the only thing you missed was starting it up for us buddy!!!!!
Is it just me or you went clockwise on the upper bolt?
I can't see anything ....
This is a piece of cake 🎂 compared to my BMW…
ofc your just popout no problem mine is glue together need more hamering lul
Edit: managed to get it out the copper wire was all rotten :S and screw are stripped now :S
Not very informative, not enough photos but I get the idea but I need to see more of what the parts look like. . But no bad vibes just wish you could show the parts.
