There was an interesting study done with shore crabs that relates to this debate. The study found that the crabs preferred to eat medium sized muscles rather than large or small ones because they didn’t have to expend the energy required to process the big muscles but got more energy than they would from small muscles. Maybe fish follow a similar principle. I know I tend to use small to medium sized baits/ lures because when I use big baits I don’t catch that many fish but when I use medium sized baits I tend to catch a lot of fish, some of them being quite large. Maybe big, old, experienced halibut don’t want to spend the energy chasing, killing, and digesting a big slmelt or herring unless yo dangle it right in front of their face. I know big halibut will come all the way to the surface to hunt small bait but I’ve never seen one do it for a big bait.
@@leogarcia7466 Very true. All I’m saying is that any fish is opportunistic. If you put something huge in front of a big fish there’s a good chance it’s gonna eat it. However it might be more inclined to eat a smaller bait because that might be more if it’s natural forage. Also I caught a 34 inch halibut this morning on a 4 inch profile (jig head and bait ) swim bait. So elephants do eat peanuts.
You gave it a good shot. Been there done that. Set out with a plan for a video and you don't catch fish so you switch gears just so you can get some fish. Caught big fish on little baits, caught little fish on big baits. Jury is out on that one.
Love the content. Thanks for all your videos. I'm relatively new to kayak fishing, having used kayaks as a spearfishing platform in California and Hawaii for >30 years. I currently fish off a Bigwater PDL 132 and your videos help me alot. I absolutely CAN'T BELIEVE you only have 72k subscribers. Young man, keep up the good work !!
Isn't the Sacramento shad run going right now? They are basically huge herring. Could do a combo video of catching shad then using it as huge bait... But they might be too big.
@@HideshiIzu what I see people do on kayak is run 2 dropper loop with shad dart or small jig head with mini grub down to a 1-2 ounce weight. If fishing from the shore you wanna use 3/4-1oz torpedo or cannon ball weight carolina rig down to a 2-3ft leader
a fishing session timer in the corner of the video could be a cool addition to the video! just thought i'd share. love the content. thanks for posting!
Yesterday (Thursday) was so windy. I still went out to my local jetty in the Bay, and I had my best day from shore fishing EVER. The halibut were hitting every single lure I used. 13 fish total with the biggest being 28". Not a bad 3 hour trip.
The biggest California Halibut I ever caught was a 25 lb. one in Newport Bay by the bait barge using an average sized anchovy. so don't know if big baits necessarily mean bigger fish
Try the Nomad DTX 140. Here in So Cal there's a youtuber Lost Horizons that catches Sandbass and Calico bass all day with it. Wonder if it will have the same results up north.
You match the hatch, when I was tuna fishing last year the bluefin was eating 3” anchovies and us throwing 6” mackerel didn’t catch hardly anything. Fish will bite what they have been eating.
It’s not the size that matters but the motion of the ocean. It’s about what imitates food or prey the most. Fish don’t always bite because they are hungry or threatened. Their mouth is like hands to a human. They use it to touch and feel if it is foreign they’ll spit it out.
I like your enthusiasm when you see a fish on. 🙂 No chance I could not having that pole in my hand and feeling that tug. #AdrenalineRush Enjoy watching you experience fishing a lot differently than up here in Butte County. Lots of Bass and Crappie. Thanks for taking us all along. 🎣👍
I‘ve heard there’s a lot of pollution in the bay recently. Is it still safe to eat your catch taken in the bay? I hope so. I grew up fishing the bay. I’m in Oregon now and my bay fishing is a thing of the past.
Take the big herring and some money face eels to your and Nick's secret place. Guarantee you will catch the big one there. Great video, but I want to see more please!!!!!!!!
my buddy caught a 70 lb sea bass this past weekend on a hoochie lmao i think it's just luck of the draw. Also caught alot of oversize sturgeon with bait no bigger than a nickel,, i think it's all preference at the end of the day which is why i assume you switch back to your lure lol... keep on fihing!
I. Think you are exactly right on about using big bait for halibut. Another thing I do is troll a little slower when going for the big ones, The bigger halibut I think are not as aggressive as the small ones , and are waiting for an easy catch.
Too bad only one pole in the bay for heli. Otherwise, drop straight down with a lottery big bait n troll any other regular. I fish for shad this way. Dropping down the smallest american shad I catch for that lottery 40lber striper that gets to pull my small boat around.
Interesting debate…. I think with big lingcod, you’ll be better off serving up a larger bait. But halibut and salmon, they want what they know and are used to. Something small, crippled, easy 2 swallow, with a slow circular gentle presentation. My PB hali was 43.5” 39.95lbs off a pathetic, nearly out of bait, last pick squid. I’m sure I dropped it right in front of its mouth and wham! It couldn’t resist that tiny morsel. My 2 cents…
Small bait catches more fish, big bait catches big fish. But does it catch "more" big fish? I don't believe so. My experience has been that you catch the same amount of big fish on either, but not all the little ones in between on big baits. I also believe you should "match the hatch", offer what they're feeding on at the time. But I like the use the biggest specimen of that bait that is reasonable. Thanks for the video.
For a title with big bait and catching fish i expected you to do the whole day with the big bait. I personally would have preferred you using the big bait and not catch one than switching after 1 hour and then using a lure.
Hi there, I would really like to see you do a catch and cook with some of the fish you catch, thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, tight lines in your new series. Regards from🏴 Jimf
My only suggestion is to use a larger , live mackerel or Jack Smelt… definitely feel bigger the bait bigger the fish… does anything bite Yo-Yo’s like here in SoCal? Think I read someone else’s comment to use eel! Definitely feel like that would be an awesome bait! I have some soft 8” artificial eels that have been bit but mainly all the bass species…sand, calico, and spotted bay

Nah, a 20 +pound lingcod, a 30 +pound halibut, 50 +pound seabass, and a 15+lb Boccaccio rockfish will easily eat a big bait.
Just from personal experience using big whole mackerel.

Have you ever tried to slow role a cutplug herring on the bottom? Works good for me on days it's to rough to jig for hali and lings.
I have not but maybe I’ll give it a try!

Awesome job catching 2 keepers bro. I have caught 10 shakers in one day.
It works for me with catfish. Big chunk of liver or a couple of big nightcrawlers on a big hook gets bigger catfish for me.
Add a spinner blade or large spin n glow in front of the bait
catch a surf perch at ocean beach....... and then a halibut from the kayyak with the surf perch as bait the same day.

Go big bait or go home. I agree, and that’s what every old timer fisherman has told me so. Big bait big fish for the exact reason you spoke of.

I think that it depends on the species when it comes to the size of bait that they’ll eat. Some species are naturally more aggressive

Use a croaker and eel again for bait !
Maybe switch to a bigger plug?
How about using a good size BIG Squid
Use a shad for bait. Big bait =Big fish
I think it would be interesting trying to catch striper with a large bait either from a kayak or from shore.
Yeah those things get HUGE
next bait try a big cuttlefish from the market

Big Bates mean big fish are used whole salmon carcasses with the whole head on there get 100 pound plus halibut.
to catch big fish you have to give up on catching lots of fish, big baits for big fish 💯
