Adam, I commercially troll fished for salmon and tuna for 14 years. I always found a large white spoon fished deep and slow was the best lure for catching halibut (short leader right off canon ball). You might consider if you haven't tried. Good luck!

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay. When I was a kid all the halibut were Giant. Monster halibut every time, now that the San Francisco Bay is completely overfished all you have are tons of these under sized shakers. It's sad.

I used to fish Halibut at Shelter Island about 3x a week for years in the early 90’s. The current gets strong from the high tide low tides so I remember on the left wing on the pier my buddies and I would call that spot “the Halibut hole” cause you’d catch a bunch of Halibut every once in a while there. I caught one day 22 Halibut but only 1 was a keeper. I believe I still hold the 2nd largest on that pier which was 40” and a old guy I fished with named “Halibut Bob” (RIP) who still holds the record for 49” back in 1988. My biggest ever was 42” at the Bait barge not more than a mile from Shelter island Pier. You can catch some huge 40 plus inches by that bait barge. Anyways, love what you do ..makes me miss fishing so much since I’ve been living in Nevada now, haha.

Sport fellows who do it every day (for fun) may now boat/land more fish and sell them? Are there not "special" small boat COMM. fish target species permits that are less expensive than a general Comm. Fish Permit? Now being a "Comm" fisher should you need to add a stern rod for 3 fishing rods maximizing your catch rate? How many lines/baits/hooks do REAL Comm. fisher/trollers have in the water. Sorry to be so ignorant on this topic; I'm just very interest in learning about your venture and this sport/com fishery??

It takes away from the freedom and easy going lifestyle of a regular kayak fisherman and puts undue pressure on you to catch fish to make a profit. It doesn't seem fun anymore.
