In my opinion that looks like a responsible size to keep, any bigger and I would let them go for someone else though, and of course, never keep more than you and your family will eat in a couple days. That being said, you do have a valid point about them hurting salmon and steelhead, but I don't think removing stripers will help salmon and steelhead in a measurable way if the management strategies are not fixed (Higher flows in the sac and san joaquin rivers). I think both species can coexist with better management of the salmonoids as they did in the early to mid 1900's.

If you want to catch stripers in the surf and eat them, then don't let anyone tell you to do different. Please educate yourself on why stripers were introduced on the west coast and don't use the "invasive species" reasoning as the crutch to bonk and bleed surf stripers. These fish were introduced for a reason, and are not invasive, but now an integral part of the CA delta eco-system. If you want to be part of the ethics large fish committee then let the large spawners over 12 lbs swim away and keep the 18" to 30" schoolies. And if you want big numbers of large stripers to catch then you need to contact your local government and have them remove the dams, control the sea lions and cormorant population in parallel with managing all the water issues in CA. Fun times.

I'm 66 been striper fishing for 60 years,I can see people's comments on stripers are some what right, but the number of these fish are 10% of what we had in the 60s -70s 80s I know I was there, salmon are 90% caught from a boat, poor people have to fish from shore and can't get many salmon,so the stripers are our main fish, with California taking more and more freshwater from the Delta the salmon will be gone in 20 years and all we will have is stripers, for ten years I worked on a farm in the central valley we would pump water from the Delta to water the crops and in this water would be baby salmon, and bass,in all of the thousands of stripers I caught I never never had a baby salmon in a striper thanks!

The first thing I noticed about this reel is its weight ruclips.net/user/postUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I wouldn't say it was uncomfortable but it was a little heavier than other similarly sized reels. However, that didn't deter my enjoyment of how smooth this reel is. I spooled it with 20lb. Tuf-Line XP and it's perfect for what I use it for. I have it paired with an 8'6" Medium/Fast Okuma SST Salmon/Steelhead rod. The combination is perfect for casting and even drifting. I used the reel all day and didn't experience any arm or hand fatigue except when fighting a few fish! The bail is solid and feels strong when engaging by reeling and manually closing the bail by hand. The large rubber handle grip is very comfortable. It's got a powerful drag, silky smooth reeling, and feels very comfortable in the hands. I recommend it!

I feel like the perch hit the flash minnow because they probably see a lot of crippled/dead sardines and other small fish get washed in by the waves and they clean em up. I've caught a few perch just letting the flash minnow get pushed around in the waves (not reeling in).

Stripers we're brought from the east coast in a custom aquarium train car in the late 1800. The Fish and Game commissioners hired an aquarist who also brought shad and other species. There used to be an active striper hatcher program to support the fishery until it was discovered that sripers pray on out migrating salmon smolts. 1st off if you want to eat it go ahead! but personally anything bigger than 28-30" doesn't taste good me 2nd if you start taking out Stripers your going to have to take out the non-native LMB in the delta 3rd as others have posted the water is the key determining factor of the salmon/steelhead numbers, if the water levels are too low and too warm they can't and won't get to spawning areas!! 4th one factor your not thinking of is if we do loose fish like the stripers or LMB do you think all those people will stop fishing? no they will dog pile on to the remaining sports fish and if you think its bad now it will be horrible soon after {example when salmon was closed a few years back the halibut got slammed and it takes years for it to come around- quite a few years with a ton of baby halibut} 5th WE CAN NOT GET INTO MY FISHING IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOURS BECAUSE WE ALL WILL LOOSE!!! many many many years when the water was as it should be {ie less sent down to so-cal} the problem did not exsist if you do your research you'll find out its all about the water --- Adam and anyone else do your self a FAVOR and watch the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC documentary WATER & POWER: A CALIFORNIA HEIST it will open your eyes!!!!!!!

Enjoy your videos and enthusiams for our fishereries. Some of your comments indicate to me, that you are uncertain about whether or not the cause of the predation on salmon and steelhead can be atributed to Striped Bass. There are so many more predators taking the smolts than just striped bass. Commorants, herons, egrets, black bass, bluegills, crappie as well as other native and non-native species. The fisheries to survive need clean water and adequate flows through the Delta where life begins. The Striped Bass have been demonized for years by water contractors. You missed another part of the equation on predation and that is what the pinnipeds are doing to adult fish trying to get to the spawning. Did you know that a well known marine scientist has stated that a 10lb. Striped Bass caught today would have weighed 20 lbs. 20 years ago. I would enjoy speaking with you on a one to one basis. I have dedicated a good portion of my life to saving our San Francisco Bay/Delta Estuary and would like to share what I have learned over the past 38+ years. Even CDFW seems conflicted about strippers. On one hand they encourage catch & keep to help salmon smolt survival rates. Then the restrictions striper take with small numbers allowed to be kept. Anybody who wants to eat one should do so, I believe. I just would not eat one from the bay or rivers due to the heavy metals issues. It we had more cattail marshes left in the Delta, that would reduce the heavy metals issue, but nobody’s doing that. BTW, both black bass and strikers are introduced. The word you were looking for is “anadromous”, living in salt water and breeding in fresh water. Like electrical poles, the reverse is “catadromous,” but very few fish, mostly eels, do that.

The numbers of fish were healthy up until about 1972 when the peripheral canal was built that took all the water from the Delta and shipped it South to LA. Fish numbers have plummeted since. It's not the striped bass it's causing the problem it's water diversions. Please stop blaming the striper

You're totally right about the striped bass being invasive and less desirable than the native species. I remember reading an article on the topic and apparently the issue was they waited too long to do something about the striper population. By the time they eventually did treat them as invasive the damage was done. They began to be over fished and then they realized that it was causing imbalance with other species of fish. The striped bass had already eradicated so many of their competitors that the striped bass had essentially replaced them in the eco-system hence why we now have a limit of 2. 🤷‍♂️

I think the main reason for keeping a 25” striper is because they are DELICIOUS!! Nice catch!!

Strippers are great eating fish and I do support catch and cook! If you’re talking about invasive species, the Pike Minnow/Squawfish is a fish that needs to be targeted! They do more damage to fry and smaller fish like Salmon than anything else!

Squawfish are native to California, at least in the sac river system and Russian rivers

That fish is a meal. There are many small stripers out there. I have lost alot of bait and tackle to stripers and caught tons of them. The little shakers are so prevalent in the rivers and delta that they are a nuisance. Eat the big ones there are plenty of little ones.

Bro if you are eating them as a food source then harvest, we need to stop relying on the grocery stores as our main source of food! Look what happen when covid hit! People panic and the shelves emptied and then the restrictions started. You should also think about a small garden for yourself too, plus you will be so much appreciated of the fresh clean food you are feeding yourself! Fish on bro! I have a few Trout recipes that I love to do if you want any ideas for when you go trout fishing, posted on my channel! Awesome video!

DFW needs to set a slot limit with only 1 fish in excess on 30 inches in possession. Most the larger stripers are females.

Shame you have to upgrade a lure to catch a bigger fish.
Those lure companies can buy the upgraded hooks and split rings in bulk and pass on the savings.

Eat the striper, they compete with largemouth and crappie in the delta and salmon and steelhead in the delta and river systems and compete with halibut big time in the bay

So are shad, salmon, steelhead. Everything eats salmon fry. Especially when it is dumped in by the thousands of pounds. I wish you wouldn't disseminate that non native narrative to justify killing striped bass. If you want to kill them kill them, but don't encourage others to vigilant fish them because you say they are non native and destructive. Nothing could be further from the truth. Overfishing of salmon, both commercial and rec and water mismanagement are the issues you should be focusing on. Use your platform for good.
