What great choices, I definitely have to put some of them on my tbr list! I didn't get to read too much this year but my favorites were Before the coffee gets cold by Toshikazu Kawaguchi, Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata and Reality Show by Anne Freytag. Have a good holiday season Mauve! ♡
I always look forward to your end of year recommendations Mauve. I definitely agree about picking up books that have been around and stood the test of time and just the new hot things that are being pushed in the media. I think my favourite recent work of fiction I read this year was Homeland Elegies by the playwright Ayad Akhtar. It kind of blurs the lines between autobiography/memoir and political satire/social commentary. The Copenhagen Trilogy seems like it has similarities and sounds like a good read. Thanks as always for your unique perspective. :)
I liked Trick but I LOVED Ties (and it’s the only other one I’ve been able to hunt down in English) Ties is about a troubled marriage. SO good. Also, not to be that person, but given the books you flag as liking, it might be worth checking out the podcast Backlisted. It’s a Brit pod that highlights under-appreciated books and the hosts focus on all the elements you flag. At the very least, it’s worth a scroll through the books they covered.
Book asmr is definitely my favorite so this is just perfect. It feels like we are friends chilling out together❤️ thank you so much it definitely helps me relax and feel like like I’m not alone.
Love your picks as always Mauve! My favourite reads of the year were Amy & Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout, Recitation by Bae Su-ah and Animal by Lisa Taddeo
1) I am loving the red vibes and am totally obsessed with your nail polish lol 2) Milkman sounds so interesting and I am ordering it as soon as I finish this comment haha Thanks for another great video! ❤️
Ahhh yes another! I’ve had s few good recommendations from here. In the dream house was a good shout last year. You should do these earlier in the month so they can be put on my Christmas list
I LOVED Milkman, I think it's truly a masterwork, I know a lot of people don't like the language and I get that it's tricky, but I felt like the whole point is that the narrator is trying to navigate a situation in which she's barely allowed to say anything without being punished by someone, of course she's evasive and secretive and inaccessible when she tries to tell us what happened, especially if you know the history of the Troubles and what people had to live through. I liked Second Place too, but I don't love that Cusk made it a letter. Every time I read the word Jeffers I had this image of some poor man trying to read this MASSIVE letter he'd been sent where a lady psychoanalyses herself at him when he really had other things to be doing, and Cusk does some outdated things with images of fatness that jar my idea of her as this super sophisticated, precise writer, I feel like she should be better than that. I still really liked it though, the end conflict between the narrator and her partner was such a beautiful portrayal of the ways that we get so wrapped up our idea of what our life should be we forget about the people and love that we already have. (also I love the one-handed tapping for what it's worth, the sounds becomes really close and soft!)
"The narrator is trying to navigate a situation in which she's barely allowed to say anything without being punished by someone" -- YES, exactly, well said! Glad too that you liked the one-handed tapping. Thanks for the feedback 😊

Something about real books.
