I was homeless throughout my teens. Napping in project hallways and trains before school, occasionally sneaking to a friend’s house for the night. No one understands what a privilege being able to brush your teeth is. Any day I would’ve chosen that opportunity over food. But what homelessness does to your ability to relate to others, mental health, your perspective, confidence, etc are things that still affect me today in my 30s.

And then having the rug swept out from under me having taken care of them until they died, I was homeless for two years before I could scrounge up enough money and got lucky enough with friends to get a start with a home, which was a bed in an empty room for a year.

As someone with OCD, the most damaging thing you can say to someone with intrusive thoughts is that it's THEIR thoughts. Someone once said that they're called intrusive because they're not YOUR thoughts. They're thoughts that invade your mind and make you think they're yours, which they're not. I've come to terms with it but still struggle with my intrusive thoughts and knowing the difference between my own thoughts and my intrusive thoughts, as they are always so convincing, even if I KNOW I do not feel or want it.
If I acted upon them, I would be in jail. Intrusive thoughts isn't impulsive thoughts, and so many people (including her) can't tell the difference.
To anyone else struggling with OCD, I feel for you and we'll get through it one way or another. Take baby steps and breathe, and even if there's that disgusting itch inside your brain telling you to continue the pattern, the cycle, the motion, etc, try your very best to ignore it, or at least do less than what you usualy do. Be proud you managed to control your OCD if only for a moment.

Homeless for 3 hours? Being homeless is a choice? Homelessness is FORCED upon the individual that isn’t financially stable or can’t afford a living and, possibly, a job.
Me and my family in Europe almost went homeless because we would get eviction notices every month or so because we couldn’t make rent. We were in SEVERE POVERTY and paying bills was a nightmare, and what hurts most is watching my parents not eating dinner because feeding us, giving us a living, fulfilling our childhood the best to their capability was their priority. I have 3 siblings so there were many times mom and dad never ate dinner, bought new clothes or shoes, and never had date nights.

Like people won't hire stinky and scruffy looking person, but to have clean ironed clothes and be clean yourself you need a place or money to get it done.
Cause if you are homeless even if you scrounge up money to pay for laundry and drying, you don't have anywhere to hang your shirt so it doesn't become creased up mess.
And then you get a job, and now you supposed to shower everyday and wash your clothes regularly? Before your first paycheck?
Not to mention stuff like needing an address, proof of address, references. Etc etc.
And if you had other situations in your life. Like being an addict, your references might be bad. Criminal convictions? If you are homeless you probably got some, urinating in public, disturbing peace, begging for money, prostitution.

As someone who actually works with the homeless every single day... about 60-70% choose the lifestyle. The massively depressing part is the 30-40% that are mentally ill or disabled with no family or support and end up living in horrific conditions. As an EMS worker, it literally breaks my heart encountering those people. They shut down insane asylums in the 70s and 80s, with nothing in place to take care of the people that can't take care of themselves. There has to be some compromise between draconian insane asylums and malignant neglect. I wish I had the answer, maybe something like nursing homes for the mentally ill. The public misconception is that these people can get better with treatment, maybe an extremely small fraction can but the majority will require care for the rest of their lives. The homeless epidemic is a complex issue encompassing goverment overstep, substance addiction and mental illness. There is no single solution that will solve all of it.

as someone who was homeless when i was younger just with my mom and my older brother and nothing else i take so much offense to this now that i have 3 more siblings i'm so very glad that they didn't have to experience what me and my older brother and my mom had to experience for about a year and a half because it was awful and i truly cannot believe there is someone on this earth who thinks that being homeless is a choice, i really hope this woman gets slapped with reality and truly experiences what's it like to be homeless so that she can actually know what's it like instead and "pretending to be homeless" by staying outside for 3 hours and acting like you know how homeless works and how every single life homelessness has ruined was "just a choice", i'm lucky to have a house right now and i truly wish the best for anybody who has been homeless because it is truly awful and scary being homeless and i hope this woman truly understands homelessness one day before spreading her opinion about it online without knowing what it's like.

Being homeless is one of my greatest fears, there is no way I will choose it out of my own free will. But at the same time... I can still imagine circumstances where it could happen even if I didn't choose it. They are not that realistic, or at least I hope not, but it's not impossible either. I don't know what life this lady has lived, but it wouldn't surprise me if she has lived a sheltered life, or been well off from the start due to rich parents.
That or she is just saying this for the attention or to troll. I'm not convinced that is not the case.

I actually watched a video about intrusive thoughts, what we think is that you have them (specifically the wanting to jump from a high place ones) because it reminds us that that’s scary, we don’t want to do that, and we value our lives. Unfortunately though when it’s forced we tend to forget about those thoughts, we just have to hope people who accidentally skip over the thoughts reminding them that stuff is bad get help before they either become like this lady or you know the rest…

    Oh! Wow! Three whole hours!
I was homeless with access to a hotel room... And it was still the worst month of my life. And that is WITH a shower and a bed and even a loaned ps 4.
Eating from food islands gave me bloating from the excessive salt intake. The amount of tasks I had to do per day nearly tripled. I went to the ER bc I coughed so hard I threw up in a ditch and literally could not stop.
Three hours really can give you perspective on the cumulative effects of chronic stress. Three hours sure is enough to give you a full picture. Three hours definitely lets you know what it is like to be on your feet so long your feet bleed through your filthy socks and the shoes you got from someone else stink forever of rot. Im sure she knows about literally anything.
I did homeless on easy mode and it was still hell on God's green earth

I really don't know what to say... Like in my country for example in theory nobody would need to be homeless because they could go to places from the government to provide (under certain conditions) but in reality I spoke to people in this situation and it's really sad to see how they got there. So for people like this it's insulting.
Sadly in my sister's case she choose this lifestyle herself. She's staying with someone but technically she is homeless and she decided to be and to do nothing when she could have seeked help. But I'd say maybe 1% of homeless people would make the deliberate decision to be in this situation. The rest of them would happily accept a home or job if simply offered by someone.
Also as someone who grew up poor I can absolutely say it's not a choice and that when you're coming from such a place you might need to work harder than someone who has never had the trouble of being in need or having to count every dollar you spend. If she never needed to do that she's just fortunate enough to go out and say this.

I also chose to be SAd while trying to sleep on the street, also having to ask friends for a toothbrush and toothpaste was a super fun bonding experience!
Also she's right about intrusive thoughts, I definitely have fantasies of lighting my hair on fire, that I have bugs in my body, that I'm a p#do because I smiled at a child, etc. My ocd is completely my choice and all things I fantasise about...

She played homeless for three hours KNOWING she had a house to go home to, a bathroom, a shower, food, a bed, safety. Why doesn’t she try it for a month? She has no idea how hard it is to keep clean, find a bathroom or even try to get a job. You need an address for your application. You need clean clothes, everyday. She no doubt took a shower, put on clean clothes and had a nice big meal before she played homeless. She’s completely clueless. She could end up homeless one day so maybe she should not be judging others. (I’m speaking from experience. I was homeless for a year, when I was younger.)

Being 12 chopping vegetables and then suddenly your brain tells you to either stab someone or yourself.. it ain't fun. And that's just the mild part of it.

I was homeless for six months because my husband walked out on me, my two kids, and the mortgage, my job "reorganized" me out (actually because I had just started making $20 an hour) both my parents died, I have MS so I couldn't find another job that paid enough to support paying my mortgage and I burned through my $60,000+ IRA trying to keep that house, finally losing it to foreclosure in 2010. I had nowhere to go, no one to help me, even though my sister had a full-on apartment in her lower level.
We were homeless until I got a little "garden-level" dumpy apartment that took us because I begged them and I had to spend the money my parents gave my kids because the paltry $365/month plus food stamps I got from the state would have kept us homeless.
I finally got subsidized housing and SSDI but I still struggle to this day.
I went from living comfortably in a nice home with a good job and nice savings to being on the streets in less than five years.

Bro, she is saying that being homeless is a choice. Sometimes people do go for the camper van life or RV life which is fine, but it's still technically a HOME. People are forced into homelessness because of inflation among MANY other things. She really is delusional.

I find the intrusive thoughts one interesting. The reason psychologists use the term "intrusive" is because those thoughts are, well... intrusive. They literally do not come from the person, they are coming from insecurities and comments of others that have managed to ingrained into the one having the intrusive thoughts. She needs to look up the dictionary definition as well as the psychological definition. I agree with the trust-fund baby sentiment when it comes to this girl. I also agree she needs to be in a mental institution...

That she knows what it's like to not be sure where you sleep, what you'll eat, to have a feeling of absolute hopelessness as you realize that people can't help you. You refer to being homeless in the past tense, which would indicate you are no longer homeless. Are you saying you didn’t have to make choices to end your homelessness? 🧐 Interesting. If when I was homeless at 14 I knew that all I needed was a magical fairy to wave her wand and give me a home without me having to make the choices I had to make to get myself off the streets, then I’d have saved myself 8 years of sleeping behind and eating out of dumpsters and turning tricks for money to survive; silly me. Also, I’m not sure if you noticed, but paying rent and bills and having to maintain a home is just a teensy bit harder than having zero responsibility, I think the word you are looking for is “comfortable” it is more “comfortable” to live in a home, not easier the only people who would argue against the power of choice are the ones who like to be a victim and nothing is ever their fault and there is always someone else to blame for their own misfortunes. I have no respect for people who deny the power of choice. You may not choose what circumstances put you there but you choose what you do with it. Anyone who says otherwise is full of more bullshit than a cornfield.
