Having a Ram under-dubbed would be excellent! I wished Paul used this for the archived set.I hope this sells well, and he decides to release more under-dubbed material.

RAM is Paul’s absolute masterpiece, his “ópera prima”, so to speak. One of its many marvelous characteristics is that it was recorded without overdubbs, hence there could be no underdubb version ! I do wish Paul performed it live with his band in a sort of farewell tour.

I am only interested in these reissues if there are bonus tracks and unreleased songs. Paul McCartney literally has hundreds of unreleased finished songs in his catalog. I have books on his unreleased music that could fill several albums and CDs. Why the hell does he keep releasing the same music over and over again. Just release the finished songs, just the best of the best

I could add a question to Paul and his 'people' - "Why wait? ALL McCartney tracks will generate attention and questions. Why not release them now so we might get The Horse's Mouth to answer our questions?" He's been wonderfully talkative during this 2022-2023 NOW AND THEN period. I'd love to hear his descriptions of unreleased tracks.

Whereas Double Fantasy benefitted greatly in a stripped down version, Band Under Run just seems underwhelming, dull and lifeless without the punch and flurishes the over-dubs and Visconti's orchestration provides. While listening to it, all I keep thinking about was what was missing from the original release. It's mildly interesting, but I don't think I will revisit this much, if at all other than the initial listen. But Double Fantasy Stripped on the other hand is my go to version.

    • @mumbles215
      @mumbles215 Месяц назад +1

Double Fantasy stripped Lennon of his bite. Walls and bridges (my fav of his solo work) had some bite. POB had some bite too tho that’s a hard swallow that album. WB is fun. On DF I do admit I like yokos songs. Her finger was more in the pulse of what was happening over Lennons.

You remember when there’s been rumors for over over 40 or more years that Paul McCartney was going to release all his best unreleased material and calling it “hot hits and cold cuts.” where the hell is it? He’s been promising the damn thing since the days of wings. Still waiting for it and it would be a great seller because it’s all new music that has not been released.

I've got the 1993 McCartney collection remaster as well as the 2010 McCartney archive collection remaster.
Now if McCartney put out this album like Lennon did for Imagine and Plastic Ono Band ultimate mixes that I might be persuaded to buy it.

For the life of me, I don't get why some people are so dismissive of No Words. It's my second favorite song on the album, after Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five. Paul even included No Words in Wings' live set, during their last tour in 1979. On the other hand, I am not a big fan of Helen Wheels. I think it disrupts the flow of the album.

Although the concept of stripped down mixes is nothing new (only the "under dubbed" buzzword is new), what really needs to come out are the individual recording tracks IMHO. With technology so many people are essentially providing stems and whatnot as it is, the next best way to engage with a fan is let them create their own personal mixes. David Bowie did this ages ago on a CD ROM. Sometimes the original mix is near perfect except for an instrument being too loud or quiet. Officially releasing the multitracks would be the ultimate "thank you" and engagement with fans. Just my thoughts on it. Peace all!

Hi Andrew, for the first time ever I can‘t agree to your view. For 50 years now my opinion has been, that this is a highly overrated album. The first three songs are wonderful, but then it‘s going downhill. Only dull songs, and the Hey-hey-ho in Mrs. Vanderbilt is the musical low point in Paul‘s whole career. The reprise in Picasso is tasteless and annoying and spoils the otherwise rather good song. Venus and Mars is so much better (not to mention George‘s Material World) - in my opinion! - But thanks for the video and greetings from Berlin, Harry

I don't think Paul is a big fan of London Town and Back to the Egg, looking back on them. The singles from that era, Goodnight Tonight and Mull of Kintyre really tower over those albums anyway. My personal feeling is that he was high as a kite for a lot of that and obviously McCartney II was his way out.. And after the Flaming Pie SDE and Collector's Edition didn't sell that well, he's probably not keen on producing and promoting expanded editions of albums he's not all that fond of to begin with. I think he's done an Archive Edition for all his favorite of his own albums already. Unless he move forward in time and does Chaos & Creation. He seems to love that one.

Who would have said ten or 15 years ago that the LP records would return on the market, with more prestige than before? Who would have bet? Well, here they are. I have been brooding a lot of times about how the MP3 and the podcast are no good for real music, the music you really like. For the ones like me who spent their teen-years holding in their hands the records they loved, placing them on the furniture (standing and leaning against the wall) to look at them more often, well, you understand what I mean. They had pushed the MP3 too far, this is the right reaction. With MP3 you don’t own anything, you haven’t got anything in your hands, and you can lose it all if the flash memory goes nuts or if a virus cancels your hard disk. Let’s get back to the old good LPs!

Thanks for this really insightful video review Andrew. I really enjoy my 2 LP set which I got last week. I love the underdubbed album, I just love hearing early versions of songs like this, lends some context to how an album finally sounds, and how these songs evolved to the versions we all came to know and love. I have a bit of a weakness for the more acoustic material of McCartney's career right from Blackbird on the white album to the current day. (If only he'd record a wholly acoustic solo album, but I can but dream.) So Bluebird, and Mamunia are among my current faves on this release. I do have a soft spot also for Let Me Roll It, or as I call it, his Plastic Ono Band On The Run track. I also invested in the CD set which I play through my surround sound system, and I have to say it sounds fab, I'd go as so far to say that it's on par with my Revolver deluxe set when I play that through this system of mine. The half speed master is now my go to choice of this album to play, having Helen Wheels on here is a bonus which I enjoy, and I wonder why it wasn't on the UK pressing as lyrically it does fit in with the rest of the album. So thanks for this Macca, now I'm looking forward to a Venus and Mars half speed with it's very own version of underdubbed....

I’m a sucker for physical releases, and bought the 2-CD version, but disc 1 is admittedly redundant with the 2010 archive edition. I ended up only ripping disc 2 onto my MacBook and syncing with my iPhone, but the Underdubbed Mixes are available to purchase alone digitally on the iTunes Store for only $9.99 and is arguably the best deal for what we got out of this release.

Thanks for the content Andrew! I bought all 3 of the available releases, both on vinyl and disc. I do have to say something though, the first LP I ever purchased with my own money was BotR. I bought my copy at a discount store called Meijer, for what I believe was $3.99. In 1979, I bought a copy of BotR from the UK, from LordSitar Records out of Long Island, NY. To be frank, after ALL these years, I never noticed that the photos on the back cover were in a different order, what an odd little detail! I will also add that I am disappointed that MPL just shipped the Archive version of BotR, they could have done something, like maybe give us the ATMOS version or the NIMBUS version, if they have it! Then maybe it would have increased sales even more! Now on an unrelated note, what in the hell is Apple thinking with these 3" one-sided singles they are releasing for Record Store Day?Why couldn't they have just done an EP of the four tracks and if they wanted to maximize the money haul, they could have just released 3 seperate EPs, one in red vinyl, one in white and one in blue! I really don't want or need another format to have to try to play. Cheers Andrew!

According to an online inflation calculator, that would be $46.11 in 2024. For comparison, back in '79 or '80 when I bought the MFSL Abbey Road, it was about $17 (probably $16.99) as best I can recall. And when I started buying the UK imports in the late 70s, they were generally a penny or two under $9 or $10.

So, I usually really agree with much of gets covered here, but I need to comment on what I think is a fairly big miss. Based on the waveform comparison shown here, I purchased the vinyl box believing I was getting something at least as good as my US original copy I bought as a young kid.
In short, no. Not even close.
The waveforms might match, but the difference was depth. The new disk was 2D, the original 3D. And let's keep in mind that most folks will say a UK original is superior to the US.
So, if you don't have Band On The Run in your collection and want one,buy an original and you wont regret it.
As for Underdubbed vinyl vs the CD..they sound identical to me. So if you HAVE a good BOTR copy and just want Underdubbed, get the cheaper CD set.
I really wonder how we ended up SO far apart on this one.

This is the first time since I started following that I disagree. Wholeheartedly. Visconti's orchestration MAKES this album special. Jet is almost unlistenable in this form. Let Me Roll It is the lone track that truly works for me. Mamunia is not that bad. 1985, once a powerhouse, now sounds like what it really was - unfinished.
That said, looking forward to the next one Andrew. Best always and keep up the great work. Paul.

What’s actually amazing, given the “Underdubbed” title, is that Paul McCartney’s real masterpiece, “RAM”, could not be reissued as an “Underdubbed version” because its original and only real release is already underdubb lacking, as opposed to Band on the Run.
“RAM” is indeed the originally misunderstood album masterpiece that was way ahead of its time and set the highest bar for all other Beatles individually and for Paul himself. In fact, its mastery was never matched, as much as all four continued to produce fine work. Actually, “RAM” sits right up there with any Beatles album and is perhaps the ultimate foundation and origin of a genre, indie rock.
Sometimes it seems to me that Sir Paul McCartney himself doesn’t appreciate in full scope the level of musical genius he achieved with this album. It’s such a revolutionary piece that I would think Paul, given the energy he still seems to have, should consider a farewell last tour in which he should interpret the complete RAM album live (as hard as some of the tunes seem to be performed live), folliwong the proper original album sequence and with the help of a mid size Camerata’s or orquestra that could somehow favor reproducing the sounds that tunes like “Uncle Albee/Admiral Halsey” and “Back seat of my car” demand. Of course it’s impossible for Paul, given his age, to reproduce his out of this world vocals on “Monkberry Moon Delight”, but some session vocalists could help thereunder, just like in the unprecedented and shading harmonies which define “Dear Boy”.
Doing that would be the most fantastic tour farewell for Paul, similar to what the sublime “Now and Then” tune has meant for the Beatles as a recording band.
RAM is, in my humble opinion, the best post Beatle album Paul ever made and one of the finest music albums in history. Its finesse and innovative nature is so unique that such characteristics are most likely what made it so misunderstood when it came out in 1971.

As to your hope of RAM being eventually released underdubbed, I believe one of its many marvelous characteristics is that it was recorded without overdubbs, hence there could be no underdubb version! RAM is Paul’s absolute masterpiece, his “ópera prima”, so to speak. I wish you would publish a video reviewing RAM’s revolutionary music, somewhat misunderstood.

I’m surprised that Andrew didn’t mention “Jet” sounding muffled compared to the rest of the record. I’m not impressed with this remaster at all and my faith in half speed masters from Abbey Road has not been restored, sadly. My original UK and US pressings beat the crap out of this remaster. Definitely not the definitive pressing. I’m quite sure the 1981 1/2 speed trounces this. No drama. Just being Real

Glad you are all recovered Andrew. Personally, I love to hear rough mix or "underdubbed" versions of albums. It gives a feel of how they were before all the polish arrives and gives the raw sound that I love. That is not to say that it works on all albums as sometimes they can actually just sound worse. However, with this album that contains some of my favourite Macca (and Wings) songs, I look forward to listening to it very soon (am awaiting a suitably opportune moment when I will not be disturbed!). Talking of which, I do feel it is a bit naughty that they are now labelling it as a Paul McCartney album. Bit unfair on Linda and Denny especially. Shame on the record company for changing it. I wonder why that is and what the upshot of it is royalty wise? Hmmmmmmm, just a thought. Any thoughts on this at your end Andrew? Anyway, great video as always. Thanks

Another great video Andrew. I only own the original US release on vinyl that I purchased in 1974. It is surely Paul's best album and I would guess that in some way Paul knew this album had to shine after the success of John's Imagine and George's "All things must pass." I did
listened to the Dolby Atmos version of the "Under Dubs" on streaming and they are a delight to the ears. In some ways better in my opinion, since , although I loved the album, I always thought the original album sounded "overdubbed" .

Just a question you may know ... On how many tracks does McCartney mention Sailor Sam?
Band On The Run / Helen Wheels ..... any more?
I can only think of two but it seems that there are many more.
Sailor Sam is a character from Rupert so I can see where Paul is coming from.

I really enjoyed the underdubbed version. I never really liked Jet. However, after listening to the drumming in Jet, blown away. I wish the drumming was more prevalent in the finished version. The drumming in the bridge by Paul was very impressive. But that damn organ sound is just annoying.

I'm tempted to get the vinyl, but lately I've been burned by half-speed masters from Abbey Road, specifically Who's Next and My Generation by The Who. The vinyl is clean AF, but the EQ is horrendous...like, zero treble. How's the EQ on this set?

Honestly glad I watched your take on this set. I planned on just skipping over it and just enjoying my 2010 archive cd set as it has the bonus material. But, I just gave the underdubbed (which I agree the alternate tracklist along with the underdubbedness provides a refreshing listen and). And the atmos version of the main album is very nice as well. My favorite atmos album tho to date is actually not Beatles related, but Stephen Sanchez’s “Angel Face”. Worth a listen if you’ve never heard. Real nice 50s/60s r&b and rock n roll sound. Anyway thanks Andrew, cheers

Let Me Roll It is one of my favorites and the new underdubbed version is now my favorite. Paul’s voice and the harmonies are more open and sound amazing, and I prefer how the lyrics are presented here compared to the released version. The rest of the tracks are very interesting but I still prefer most of the release versions except for Let Me Roll It. Although this set is tempting, I am probably going to stick with finding a UK original when I go on my trip to London.

I listened to the Atmos mix through my home theatre system. And I must say that this McCartney album really has the best Atmos mix so far! They really put a lot of work into this one. When the orchestra hit me from behind on the title track it almost knocked me off the couch 😅 Atmos on headphones is fun but not nearly comparable to the listening experience a Atmos Home Theatre System gives you! 😃

One other thing to note for Atmos, I had a pleasure this last week to hear, silly love songs on a pair of klipsch horn speakers. I understand what the mastering engineer of mobile Fidelity sound lab meant when he says good stereo will just outclass surroundsound and you won’t even need multiple channels. mind you this also, I think a lot of it being both the speakers, and the fact that was Macintosh amplifiers

though it's disappointing the CD has the exact same sound as the 2010, I think I'd still get it since I don't own this album on CD, just my old mexican LP which doesn't sound that good to begin with.
