  • Apple have give us some incredible box sets of Beatles music from 1966-1969. But there is a gap in that chronology which urgently needs addressing. During the period from mid-1967 up to the time they went to India, the Beatles recorded some of their most creative and interesting music but this period has been seriously under represented in the sets we've received so far. In this video we put forward our suggestions for what a box set from this period should contain, including the legendary Carnival of Light

A tape of "Carnival of Light" was played in public twice as part of the "Million Volt Light and Sound Rave" at the Roundhouse in early 1967. Several people have been asked to recall what is what like, including the organizers as well as Daevid Allen (then of Soft Machine, who performed) and most seemed underwhelmed. One complaint was that Paul sent a tape when everyone else played live. Most likely George vetoed the track's inclusion on Anthology as it probably doesn't stand up too well as a piece of experimental electronic music if the reports from 1967 are anything to go by. Still, as a historical artifact, it would be worth hearing.

Yeah that makes sense. Paul wanting it to be released is the most important part of that to me. And I really can’t understand not hearing something because of a couple peoples anecdotes from that night that may have very different tastes than me. Especially considering how far music has come. It would be an interesting piece to place in history. What possible harm could it do. It’s just art. It’s not classified CIA documents.

Interesting that George should have vetoed it, considering his own 1969 release "Electronic Sound" perhaps he didn't want to remind anyone. ;-)

Great video as always, Andrew! I think a box set for this period is long overdue, indeed. I think all tracks official masters should be included, with notable extended versions like "It's All Too Much" and "You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)" included like bonus material, as well as everything selected for "Anthology 2". Finally, "Carnival Of Sound" would be a great name for the set. I think this period should get a box set, especially for any of the earlier material is covered. And DO NOT recycle the 2023 Blue Album mix of "I Am The Walrus"...make a new one, and base it off the LOVE mix that Giles and Big George did back in '06.

How bout the live vocals version of Revolution from the video ?
The sessions for " The Inner Light " all mono & remixed Stereo of the tracks from that period ?
I've often thought that a " Beatles '68 " album , like the US , Beatles '65 , would've been nice w Hey Jude single , the yellow submarine EP & Lady Madonna single , add 2 more & you have a 10 track album ( with Hey Jude being long & add the 8 min version " Its All To Much " , 8 tracks may be perfect for a long player at the time.

a box set for this period is not something Apple should ignore. aside from many outtakes of these songs, any jams that've been mentioned by various books like Mark Lewison's or such should be included. any chance to hear how those derail into other songs would be a treat

Hi Andrew, I agree this period is sadly overlooked. I guess the only thing I am thinking is that if they do this Magical Mystery Tour is part of this and that surely deserves a release of its own? I think I would like to see a collection of all these songs and outtakes released as a separate collection or possibly a magical mystery box set with these songs including carnival of light released as bonus tracks. Lets face it whatever they release it will sell but really we all want is the 27 minute Helter Skelter, carnival of light and some unheard demos or outtakes of their material from this period which was some of their most interesting work. George said to Paul after anthology any further releases would be scraping the barrel but the demo and early takes of yellow Submarine on Revolver for example were very interesting so there is lot's more for us to discover. Let's see what Apple do Great upload as always

The Beatles’ engagement with what we might call art music, and that world’s engagement with them, is a big piece of the band’s legacy. Great idea. I’m still thinking Apple are keeping “Carnival of Light” for either the exhibition they were planning prior to the pandemic or some film project.
Apple are notoriously gun-shy about anything that may annoy the “casual fan”, even if it’s included on an expensive box set (which is why we didn’t get the 27 minute “Helter Skelter”). Giles has also admitted to not being a hardcore fan and tends to pick titles based on what sounds good on a box set to a casual fan. Not a bad way to do things, the track listing on the box sets are great, but we end up missing out on those holy grail tracks we’ve been wanting to hear for decades.
But videos like this will hopefully point them into the right direction. Keep
    It up!

Yeah I can definitely understand that. The Helter Skelter track especially considering how long it is and how much space it’d take up on an vinyl or CD. If that’s the case, I feel they should at least release those more niche recordings on digital platforms only where length wouldn’t be an issue. Kinda like what they did for the Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963.

John is visibly singing it, and he does have the one big mic in front of him the whole time, but there’s another, smaller mic that Paul pulls over to himself a couple bars before the “She Loves You” bit - seemingly catching his ad-libs leading up to it - before swinging it back over to John in the middle of it. The camera is very wide for the initial grab, and you only just barely catch the mic coming back over to John, but it’s all there. I think you probably hear John singing that whole bit, with Paul possibly also audible on the first part.

@@KyodaiKino According to John Winn's description (That Magic Feeling: The Beatles' Recorded Legacy Volume Two 1966-1970), Paul and George's vocal mics weren't plugged in for the live broadcast. If that's the case, then I reckon any live vocals from Paul would only have been picked up as bleeding into John's mic. Near the end of the prerecorded intro of the live broadcast, John sings "she loves you yeah, yeah, yeah" twice (well, stops before the last two yeahs). So the working theory is that toward the end of John's live vocal performance, Paul prompts John to launch into the chorus of She Loves You.

A very interesting single LP would be the 16 minute jam with harmonium on the A side with "Carnival Of Light" on the B side. Or vice versa. The front cover could be a collage of photos of the boys at work in the studio. The back cover could have extensive notes about the two sessions on the record.

No.9 was a great homage to those using sound montages already. I don’t think it would cast a bad light on The Beatles at all. Even the full longest version of You Know My Name (LUTN) in stereo would be great. They can do it. The psychedelic period would be great to feature.

Great idea and suggestions. I read not so long ago that Paul wouldn't mind seeing Carnival released. I hope it happens. One release I wouldn't mind either is to hear snippets from their Please Please Me L.P. recordings. I think to hear those very first chords strike up on their first ever L.P. would be magic.

Love this idea! This set might also include the version of “Revolution” only available as a video on the “Anthology” DVD’s, as far as I know. It combines the hard rock version with “shooby-doo-wahs “ in the bg vocals from George and Paul. It’s my favorite version, but I’ve never found it on disc.

I don't know if you have any sway over Capitol, but I've often thought it'd be terrific to have a 'Capitol Albums Vol.3'. Possible inclusions:
    Yesterday... And Today [1966 (mono/stereo) & 1969 (stereo) versions]
    Revolver [mono/stereo]
Magical Mystery Tour [1967 album (mono/stereo)]
    Hey Jude

Love the channel, Andrew. The one thing that im always amazed at is the wealth of material recorded from just 63 to 70. That's not very long. There is probably a ton of stuff that hasn't been released (I could be wrong). I so love the original UK releases and can no longer listen to my "Crapitol" versions. Great work as always Andrew. I’m assuming you’re familiar with a RUclips channel called (I believe) You Can’t Unhear This, where a Beatles fanatic tries to get to the bottom of various mysteries, like who exactly is playing bass on Helter Skelter, who’s singing “she loves you” on All You Need Is Love, and many others. But your channel is the best. I’ve used it as a guide for tracking down reasonably priced but good quality analog Beatles records. Stay fab!

I do think a set like this just focused on including tracks that didn’t make it onto any of the box sets would be really cool! Though I definitely can see how some longer takes like the 30 minute take of Helter Skelter may be a bit too long and may prevent other songs from being included, though it’d be cool if it was just released on streaming services where length wouldn’t be an issue.
Another outtake I’d love to see is some more demos like Eleanor Rigby, Good Morning Good Morning, Across the Universe, and Hey Bulldog.
A clean stereo mix of Something Take 39, complete with John’s piano outro which he later used on Remember, would also be really awesome. There is a mono version circulating online and on bootlegs, but it’s quality is subpar with a lot of clipping. Hopefully they have a higher quality version somewhere in the vaults.
Another highlight I’d love to see included is Revolution 1 (Take 20) in a new stereo mix. It’s a really fascinating version that features even more aspects of Revolution 9 than Take 18 that was on the White Album SDE.
Then again, we very well may get some of these on a hypothetical expanded version of Anthology that could release for the anniversary.
Either way, I do hope we get to see more outtakes that were left on the cutting room floor of the Super Deluxe Editions

Another excellent topic Andrew!! In your suggested box set i would love to see stereo mixes of "Jessie's Dream", "Aerial Tour Instrumental" & "Shirley's Wild Accordion". I would also love to see the full 8:30 mix of "It's All Too Much", the untitled instrumental from May '67 & all of the different recordings of "You Know My Name". By the way, the released mix of "It's All Too Much" may well be a composite of different takes/overdubs. John may well have played guitar on the original backing track, but on the released version the guitar work very much sounds like Paul. George H. states this in an interview. The bass is very much the work of Paul.

PSYCHEDELIC BOX SET: I also had been thinking about this possibility for quite some time. There are quite a few candidates for an album like this. You noted some, but here are some of my initial candidates for inclusion:
You Know My Name (Look Up The Number)
    Revolution # 9
    Whats the New Mary Jane
    Helter Skelter (Long Version)
    Carnival of Light
Electronic Sound (selections from Georges album)
Selections from John and Yokos recordings
    Xmas Message Recordings
    Flying (Aerial Instrumental)
    Jessies Dream (From MMT)
    Not Guilty
Its All Too Much (extended or alternate versions)
Its Only A Northern Song (extended or alternate versions)

It's been a source of frustration for a long time that they still haven't released the original stereo mix of 'Strawberry Fields Forever' as it appeared on the Capitol MMT album. Instead, they keep using the 1971 remix made for the German LP. So, yes, that should definitely be resolved. The full-length 'It's All Too Much', while it's chaotic to put it mildly, would also be welcome as it has that extra verse that appears in the film but not on the album. Not sure about the untitled jam though!

Brilliant as always Andrew - Combining MMT and YS and all the other tracks mentioned would be fantastic but sadly I cannot see anything like this happening for a few years yet - maybe 2027 ? - Lets concentrate on trying to convince them to get all of the 1962 / 1963 material out in a box set out first - First 2 albums plus singles and items off Anthology 1 plus the full Decca demos and the cleaned up Star Club album - what a set that would be

I think this should all go with a proper MMT focused release. Put the Capitol Album version for the new remix, also present original MONO, then the bonus discs we should get ALL the bizarre stuff that they recorded during that period (including Carnival of Light in it's entirety plus all the other goodies you mentioned), the alt takes and original cuts and mixes/remixes that comprise the Yellow Submarine soundtrack songs (thereby making a YS set not necessary for the future). That would make a really stellar set, and fit nicely between my Sgt Pepper and White Album box sets (they're lonely without MMT, let's be honest)
Cheers again on another fab video!

A snippet of Carnival of Light was issued on Paul’s Liverpool Collage. Listen to the first track and that’s Carnival. The description of Carnival by Martin L’s The Beatles recording sessions matches exactly what you’ll hear on the first track.
