  • MARTINEZ - Authorities on Thursday night released body-worn camera footage of a police shooting that left one man dead and another injured last month outside a Martinez cannabis dispensary.
The recordings show at least two Martinez police officers - Cole Bennett and Raul Ceja-Mendez - firing handguns at an Infiniti sedan as it drives away from Velvet Cannabis Dispensary at 4808 Sunrise Drive in the early morning hours of Aug. 18.
Tahmon Wilson, 20, of San Francisco, was killed in the shooting and his 22-year-old brother, Tommy Wilson Jr., was wounded.
Footage from Bennett’s camera shows him parking behind another patrol vehicle in the driveway to the dispensary and approaching the Infiniti from the driver’s side with his pistol in his hand. As the Infiniti squeezes past the patrol vehicles and appears to bump another officer, Bennett fires at the back of the car and keeps firing as it turns onto the street.

That officer is unstable, putting his hands on a moving vehicle risking his life for crumbs and putting his coworkers and surrounding communities lives in danger, thus an unwanted shootout over spite.

You can cearly see the fleeing vehicle would have run the officer over had he not jumped out of the way.
I dont see one comment condemning these people for the crime they were commiting.
And of course the parents of the driver killed takes no responsibility nor accountability for their kids actions.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

People are dumb to condemn the police for this. A good way to not get shot, is A. don’t break the law, and B. when a gun is pointed at you, follow direction. Not rocket science.

About forty years ago San Francisco PD faced a similar situation. (At the time though body cameras weren't even an idea.) The suspect's vehicle tried to hit an officer standing in the road. (I think he'd been on surveillance.) The officer fired his revolver into the car and killed the girlfriend of the driver. Her family sued SFPD and I believe they prevailed.
In this case Martinez PD was responding to a crime (robbery at pot dispensary) and the suspect vehicle's driver did attempt to hit an officer as it sped away. If the officer had jumped into the road, that would be construed as the officer endangering himself. But in this case the thieves tried to harm, if not kill, a cop who was in the road. I sincerely doubt that any jury would find in the dead thief's family's favor.

“You scoot, they shoot”. That policy should be standardized, and made crystal clear to everyone in America. We are feral savages, and getting more so by the day. Whether in or on any vehicle, or by foot; police should assume that you are seeking to gain a place and time of tactical advantage to attack. Assuming anything less from such unpredictable animals as ourselves would be suicide for a cop. Weapons, warrants, contraband, etc.. Once police have made contact, clear up the issues. Lawyers will make you ALL kinds of money if the police are proven to have been out of bounds.
“I was scared” …HAH! Whenever someone ran and said that, we all know they were dumping whatever they could once they had enough of a lead. NOBODY is scared of the police; they just don’t want their criminality to be inconvenienced by being held to account.

This was murder, no reason to use deadly force.

You're a fool. So the criminal can use deadly force but the officer can't? And people wonder why our society is the way it is. It's because of people like you who think these thugs should be treated with kid gloves. If you had your way, this guy should've been allowed to drive off, keep on living his criminal life, all while putting society at risk and him attempting to kill officers when he's caught. Thankfully at least one of them won't be doing that anymore. Too bad they both weren't taken out. The passenger needs to be locked up for the rest of his life.

when you almost run over a cop trying to escape, that's considered deadly force, so they're allowed to return fire with deadly force as well.

You're kidding right? The criminal used a deadly weapon, his car, and almost hit the officer. He absolutely deserved deadly force and now we have one less criminal to worry about.

Yes, because nearly running someone over is certainly not justification for deadly force.

What is wrong with people like you? So it's okay for a criminal to use deadly force by attempting to hit an officer with his car but the officer isn't allowed to protect himself and others in return? Maybe if the thug had complied, stopped the car, and handled things like an adult, he'd be alive today. Thankfully he won't be a risk to society anymore. It's just too bad his brother didn't suffer the same fate.

Mentally switch who has the badge and make your judgement call from there.
Would it be OK for some ordinary citizens to mag dump at a police car that is going away from them?
Would that be, "equal justice under the law"?
