Pathology: good compensation (especially relative to number of hours worked), diversity of knowledge, get to sit down and drink coffee/tea, very little call duties, and are absolutely needed to make a diagnosis so that clinicians/surgeons can complete their jobs appropriately. Also, very nice culture, don’t have a lot of insurance company interactions, and none of the headaches of dealing with “certain patients”….a hidden medical specialty that people are missing out on
Can you imagine every med student thinking like Kevin? No one will ever get treated for any illness, but everyone will be beautiful and with almost no visible scars, lol😅
Thing is plastic surgery is so vast because it's not only esthetics, it involves skin cancer, arm surgery, reconstruction of nearly any traumas, it just is the specialty that touches the most things at one time without forgetting that it's the most rewarding career when it comes with finance and freedom since you can open your own practice/s and even create your own brand
Neurology is the best specialty. Physical diagnosis. Medical imaging. Complex array of pathology (more diseases than all other specialties combined). Cutting edge technology (multimodal imaging, biologics, nusinersen, intraoperative monitoring, etc). Real opportunity to connect with people and make a profound difference in their lives. What is a more meaningful career: helping people to walk the aisle at their child's wedding or helping people to achieve society's arbitrary beauty standard for ideal size of a given organ? ;)
The anaesthetist and surgeon relationship sounds very different in the UK than the US. I don’t know if it’s because we’re much more heavily involved in critical care and leading the resuscitation of unstable patients around the hospital but more senior surgeons will frequently defer to trainees on a lot of aspects of patient care. If a surgeon was rude to me in theatre I’d call them out on it there and then.
Yeah it's weird aye. Where I work, surgeons are rarely rude to the anaesthetists (anaesthesiologist in the US). We manage their unstable patients that need to go to theatre so the surgeons are pretty pleasant to us. I'm not sure what it's like in the US though. It might be due to the sheer amount of private work in the US so the relationship might become a bit parasitic.
