  • When cactus flowers get pollinated, fruits develop after. Although cactus fruits are edible, most of them are just harvested for their seeds. This video will show how cactus seed pods look like as well as tell you when they are ready to be collected for the seeds.

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 года назад

      That is great that you are getting so many sprouts! 😃 One pod is full of seeds, maybe even a hundred. If you plant it as a whole, you’ll end up with lots of seedlings bunched up together. It is also not advisable to plant the pulp especially if you are planting in a closed humid environment because it will encourage molds or fungus.

      Hi Maan. Rest time nila diyan sa pinakamalamig na months, which is Dec-Feb. Reduce mo yung watering (or even no water) that time and keep them in a cooler spot. Para that is their signal to stop growing and go on their dormancy. Pagdating ng March, they should wake up again. 🙂

      ritchie ferguson sometimes when I open a fruit/seed pod that is not ripe yet, I discover that the seeds are different colors. I guess they are still in different stages of development. There are some seeds though that seemed to have developed faster. So you may still get some to germinate. 🙂

    How long can you keep cactus seed before it becomes nonviable?

    • @CactusCaffeine
      @CactusCaffeine  3 года назад +1

      I’ve sown seeds that are 3 years old and they still germinated. I am not sure exactly how long they can last. The length of viability also depends on how well you store them.

      This is an old comment, but I thought I'd reply anyway. Yes, you can eat any cactus fruit. Even if the fruits are tiny, they are absolutely delicious. I have several different small mammilara species. They produce little red or pink colored fruits which are about 1/2-inch long. But wow, they are probably the sweetest fruits you'll ever taste! They're as sweet as candy. So, even though the fruits are tiny, they are fun to eat and very tasty.

      @@nycgirl8396 You're welcome! Mammilaria are my favorite cacti, because the tiny fruits are so yummy! Oh, and my suggestion is, when you buy cactus, buy them in pairs of the same species. That way, they will cross-pollinate and produce fruit. I live in Ohio, and I keep all my cacti outside on the patio, as long as temperatures are above freezing. Bees love cactus flowers, so they do the work of pollinating the flowers.

      @@hamsterama interesting..well, I live in Germany and all my plants are inside (I'm living in an apartment) so sadly the idea with the cross-pollination doesn't work that good for me ☹️ But I'll keep trying 😄

      Yes. But some are too small that you will only end up eating mostly seeds. The big fruits like the prickly pear and the dragon fruit are what are commercially sold as fruits.
