@@reallanterns I have a Dietz #2 Blizzard with a red globe, and on the globe and the fount is marked N.Y. U.S.A., but I am trying to determine it’s age. It has a fair bit of what looks to be original blue paint. Looks to be in very good shape, never dropped and not really any dents. Just a bit of very light rust speckle in some spots. It has been hanging in my wife’s grandfathers workshop for a long time, and not exposed to any weather. I’d like to send you a pic if you are interested. SplitHoof
This is first time I have seen one of your videos. Well laid out, good lighting, overall a great video. These glass font lantern are so neat, thanks for sharing
Thank you - the ambiance when having one lit outside in the evening ; with your favorite drink and friend, is something everyone should experience. I love my Colemans for tasks but my kerosene for relaxing.
i think the fount font comes from a french word i believe to remember and it had to do with the ink containers for fountain pens as the container was the fountain and that is why it was named fount in these lanterns . its been years since and i cant for the life of me remember where i read it
Hey! Very fun vid! Nice to see the other glass fount lanterns exhibited! Very rare NCL Crank Tubular glass fount! That is so fun to see it burn with the other lovely Crystals! The Winfield is so cool, too! The tin on your C.T. Ham is incredible!
Very well made video and beautiful lanterns. My favorite is the one with the blue globe. One question: were these all in working condition when you acquired them or did you have to restore some to get them working?
The Winfield needed an air tube resoldered and the CT Ham I cleaned up quite a bit... you couldn’t tell it had the tinning still on it when I got it. Other than that I just had to add wicks and lamp oil.
To me, 'font' is a type choice for publishing. I have no glass fount lanterns, think it's a shame they aren't made anymore. My favorite Dietz, strangely enough, is my hot blast Monarch. I love the yellower flame, will often have mine giving off soft light in my den. Great video!
A family member has a Ham’s No 0 Glass Fount Lantern in very good condition, the last date on the bottom is Oct 31,1893 and she would like to find out the value. Thanks Roger
thank you for the informative vid... I would like to know the Quality of a New Dietz... (made in china) ... particularly the Solid Brass #76 ... is it worth what they charge ???
Daniel, thanks for watching. The Dietz lanterns made in China I would rate maybe a 6-7 out of 10. They are lighter weight, much due to the thinner globes. You should get good use from them though. There aren't a lot of current lantern manufacturers... Dietz, WT Kirkman, and Feuerhand would be the ones I would go with if I was going to use it. Lamplight Farms & V&O seem just a step above the real cheapy ones (Stansport, Florasense, others) which are only good for decoration. The brass means they won't rust which is probably why the premium. There are a whole lot of better quality, good burning antique ones out there one eBay, etc. if you are looking for one to burn.
Nice video. I just recently discovered lanterns. I have a question. Are there no glass fount lanterns that are cold blast design? If not, what’s the reason? Thanks.
Bubba... that’s a great question. I never thought about it, but no there aren’t any cold blast (short globe) lanterns that I’ve ever heard of with a glass fount. Timing wise the cold blast lanterns like the Dietz D-lite really became popular around 1915-1920 at the end of the glass fount “era”. Perhaps the popularity or lower cost of the cold blast lanterns led to the switch from the glass founts.
7:30....I don't see the harm, in taking some FINE steel wool, sos pad, fine scotch Brite pad OR EVEN the kitchen scrubber that has that green plastic backing......and doing a light rub out of corrosion so it's a TINY BIT easier to get that glass FOUNT in and out! Same on threads of bottom cap! Enjoying your lantern vids TY!! I realize, people "like" patina. To me, Patina is the WARNING corrosion is on it's way! So yeah...maybe just so you can get the fount in and out and unscrew the bottom wouldn't hurt! ;)
Very cool...
Thank you for the education! I was not aware of the glass fount style, but now I know what to look for.
Love that blue globe also!
Thanks for the comment! Good luck lantern hunting. The hunt is half the fun!

Just a great video and so informative. I'm so jealous of your collection : )
Loved It>>>"FOUNT" >>> Font Is A Typing Style/Size.
Really injoying your channel!

I have always called them FOUNT. The word FONT is used as a description of different varieties of print styles.

Yea they are.
i'm sharing this !
What letters were made in Syracuse New York?
S - Syracuse M - Main Factory in New York
Please compare the air pilot to the blizzard
👍👍
As you asked what the Fo(u)nt is called in our native languages. Here is the German Word for it:
Brennstoffbehälter
I love how literal German is.. Brennstoffbehälter... "Fuel Holder". Makes sense to me :)
@@reallanterns
Even the "fuel" part (Brennstoff) can be broken down to "Brenn" and "Stoff" so literaly burning stuff 😄
Are these all rebuilt with chinese parts as they look to new for a 100 yr old comparison to the ones I have to date
These are all original pieces. Some have been cleaned up and the Winfield one required a solder repair, but all over 100 years old.
Or u could say, Tank.
