- The MUNCHIES team travels to Buffalo to explore the untold history of this city’s most popular dish: Buffalo wings. Lina Brown-Young, daughter of John Young, Buffalo’s original King of Wings, makes her father’s famous fried wings with mumbo sauce while discussing her dad’s legacy. Exploring the social and political implications of this oft forgotten history, this video attempts to uncover a lesser known side of the Buffalo wing’s origins.

Shout out to the producers on this segment - this was so deep and interesting, and I'm glad you highlighted this, especially with his family and local historians. This man changed casual and fast food dining in North America- astounding
Wonderfully said!
Very True 👍🏾
Shout out to Marc Moscato for showing me, a Memphis Native, that John Young is the pioneer of my favorite finger food. This is authentic American History!
My fav RUclips video rn cuhh ruclips.net/video/kPznVA-yANk/видео.html no lie

I've always heard this story growing up. When I was a kid people in my community never said anchor bar, they always said John Young. So props too munchies for finally giving the side of the story we knew as kids.
Cried a little seeing her face light up holding the plate of wings at the end of the video ❤️
This video was absolutely beautiful. I’d likely never have heard of Mr. Young, and it’s a genuine fucking privilege to have been educated on something I never thought twice about. Good shit, Munchies. Good. Fucking. Shit.
Don't swear please.
I whole heartedly agree. This is culinary history at its finest. I love it.

So glad John Young is getting recognition, it’s way past time. Broadway Market.. someday I want to get there
Chicken wings are the reason I gave up years of being a vegetarian hahah
Likewise 😂
Welcome back!
Hahaha I feel this, I spent 4 years being vegan and never stopped craving good chicken wings, I enjoy good wings in the regular now 🙄
well Congratulations HAHA
I’m all for being a vegetarian for religious reasons, but I don’t get it when it’s a lifestyle choice or supposedly “healthy.” We’re humans, we’re omnivores and we’re meant to eat meat! Don’t even get me started on vegans…
As a native Buffaloian and here my entire life I have learned something today... I had never heard of John Young or the "Mumbo wing" prior to this episode of Munchies! Love the show and I will definitely be patronizing the Broadway Market so I can finally try them. I'll share this video with everyone I know! Thank you Munchies for this historical episode and thank you John Young and the Young family for beginning and carrying on this GREAT legacy ❤
Things like this make me wanna see these people in person and give them an hour long hug... this is our history...
First food doc that's been powerful enough to bring me to tears. I will definitely always think of Mr Young, the king of wings, every time I have myself a nice chicken wing. Bless him and all his friends and family.
My favourite food in the world and I had no idea. Thank you John Young !
this is the best episode of Munchies..its more than just food
lived in Buffalo all my life and never heard this story. kinda crazy. Thanks for the story. Anchor Bar has some explaining to do
Born and raised in Buffalo (I am white) and I've never even heard of Mumbo Wings. Sure as hell want to try them now though, they look delicious!
Never heard the name mumbo, but the way they're described it sounds like the sauce my daddy makes(he's from the south but has lived in buffalo for 37yrs). Basically they're "Buffalo" wings, but with a tomato base and a Lil sweetness.
@@Rose-zf1jw it’s a dc thing
Same here 😂
@@Rose-zf1jw so basically they are in no way “Buffalo” wings.
@@InSaNiTy0Gaming mumbo wings and fries!
Wow! A food story for all time! I teared up a little bit. Hope this tradition stays in the family for many more generations.
Munchies, this is the kind of content we crave. You guys are killing it. Thank you so much!
Buffalo wings are the best bar food appetizer ever invented.
Might be my favorite food of all time when they're done right
One of the reasons why I love history so much is for moments like this. We don't have a longtime on this earth, but every single person who has ever existed has a story. History is how we learn about those stories. Great video munchies👊
Omg bless Mrs Lina 🥰 she was trying to hold onto IP, and still share with us - I see you 🥰🥰🥰
It’s crazy, my dads 74 and he told me the same thing, back in the day the chicken wing was seen as a throwaway part of the chicken so really poor people ate them and they were cheap as hell. Boy how things have COMPLETELY changed lol.
What an awesome story. I'm glad John Young is getting the recognition he deserved. The wings look fantastic! Lina is doing his memory justice, and it would be cool to see a new restaurant opened to continue the legacy.
recognition for what? It stated he did not invent the buffalo wing, so he's just one of many others that cooked chicken wings
@@matthewhunter6421 Yeah, and Tiger Woods didn't invent golf. He's just one of many others that played golf. Re-think your argument, bub.

Lina seems so sweet, I would love to and sit for hours listening to her stories & eating wings 😁
I will never eat another chicken wing without thinking of John Young. Thank you for this wonderful video, and thank you to Lina Brown-Young!
Showed this to my culinary students today. Always great to learn the true humble beginnings of food.
I'm from buffalo and my grandma would serve these to us. They were the best
Bro send some to California
Nvm fuck it I just bought a flight
Recipe?
You gotta recipe for that Mumbo sauce fam?
I don't sorry fellas my grandmother passed in April all that stuff went with her
And now the wings are more expensive than the breasts 😂
Crazy how things changed lol they used to be cheap throwaways
For good reason. Wings and thighs are the best part IMO. Chicken breast sucks!
Wow, this was beautiful to watch. So much amazing history that we should all be proud of.
This was really cool. Not to mention it literally made me go order wings haha just wish I could have some of those John Young wings!!!
Thank you John Young and thank you Vice / Munchies for bringing this to us!
Munchies, we need more content like this please. Great stuff
I never ate chicken wings until I moved to the south. At home, I never ate the wing; I preferred the thigh. In NJ I don't remember people eating buffalo wings that much. I knew about them but it didn't seem like something I would like. When I moved to Georgia, there was this restaurant in the Macon Mall called American Deli that's a chain, and I tried their buffalo wings and then their lemon pepper wings, and while I like buffalo wings, the lemon pepper wings became my favorite. Thank you, John.
Try them together buffalo wit LP and even bbq sauced wit LP
Greetings from UK. Im a huge fan of Wings and never even heard of John Young until today. So good for John to be getting his credit where it's due. RIP!
what credit is due? It already stated the buffalos wing was invented by someone else, and so he did nto popularize that, so in the end, he's one of many people who served chicken wings
@@matthewhunter6421 stop capping
Thank you munchies for this episode. It was beautifully created, John Young would be so proud.
Man I wanted chicken wings last night too! Gonna have to get some this weekend.
Thanks for presenting the great story on John young's legacy !
This is a phenomenal story!
This was heartfelt and emotional. RIP John Young, you were a legend. #BlackHistory
@Lovely Yan ain't you vegan
Was? He still is a legend
Munchies on a roll with great content and spreading info to the masses
Every restaurant needs a Lina. So intelligent and you can tell she puts love, care, and appreciation for the food and its history. Need to make that wing visit.
This was so sweet. I haven’t had the pleasure of visiting the state of NY but when I do I sure hope I have an opportunity to try the Mumbo chicken wing.
I love this story I'm so proud that you guys put it on RUclips. Thanks for letting the world know just how great American can be.
Very nice story. I'm glad that some recognition is being given to Mr. John Young and his Buffalo Mumbo Wings. ❤
And here I thought mumbo sauce was just a DC thing. Interesting to know there's a bigger story here.
He said a dude in Washington gave him the idea 63. Not sure if he meant Washington state or D.C.🤷🏿♂️ Still an interesting story though
I'm in Brooklyn, we got mumbo sauce too but I don't think it's the real deal. Only Chinese restaurants have it and it's usually super bright red and super sweet.... Is it different in DC?
@@mmoore5190 definitely different based off where you go. Bright red isn't the original. The original sauce is thicker with a little spice and darker in color.
@@Knuckingfutz1 yeah I knew I was missing out on something. Y'all intrigued me. Now I wanna make my own mumbo sauce
@@marcusjackson553 Why would he be talking about Washington on the West Coast?
What a legend John Young was. More people should know his story. One of the most popular foods in America might not exist without him.
This is so wholesome it warms my heart. Great job Vice
It's great that we have people who really fact check and look at the history. When it comes to Buffalo wings anchor bar gets the notoriety and fame, but now I know there was something before that.
yeah, probably millions of people cooked and ate chicken wings before that lol. what they're attempting to do is bypass the actual inventor of the buffalo wing, who actually made them popular
This is bs completely different sauce. Neither one invented the wing itself but "Buffalo" sauce is a vinegar based hot sauce cut with butter. These are 2 different things. Like spaghetti, lo mein, or udon are all noodles but completely different things
A chicken wing is not a chicken breast. John Young purchase the cheapest, often times discarded part of the Chicken, he brought attention to the chicken wing with his special Mumbo sauce and should be credited as the first to bring notoriety to chicken wings as a Buffalo, New Yorker, in early part of 1960s. His restaurant in Buffalo closed in late 60’s due to safety from race rioting… years later returned, can only imagine if not for all the destruction, turmoil around his business establishment causing him to close, then he’s would not been blind sided by the one who getting credit and recognition for Buffalo chicken wing that had been the reason he started his restaurant long before 1964.. Mr. Young used the full size chicken wing, not broken up pieces of the chicken wing, like flats & drumetts without the even wing portion, assuming it’s discarded. His special Mumbo sauce coated a real chicken wing is the game changer, it’s his signature of an indelible mark, he’s rightfully a first.. elevating cheap, less desirable part of the Chicken sold. Mr. Young’s Mumbo sauce changed all that for the least desirable chicken wing, to one of today’s most popular and pricey$ meats and delicious comfort food when spiced up, even plan ole hot sauce. When you consider all the facts, with people still around who patronized and know the truth, rightful credit belongs to him for Buffalo Chicken wings, he knew his special Mumbo sauce recipe was a winner for life, give him his flowers !!🌻🐓☮️
I’m from NYC and I drove to Buffalo last year thanksgiving 2020. It was such a great roadtrip I literally ate my heart out! Due to covid there was not much tourists or people outside. I ate at anchor bar it was solid but not the best. I loved the history and being inside there. It was like a museum. The BEST probably in the world is hands down Duffs. That thing was next level delicious, highly recommended. But aside from the wings buffalo has some awesome restaurants/food and the vibe is great. Plus the football team actually plays in the state of NY and is REALLY GOOD! I became a fan after visiting the stadium. Aside from the cold winters the city is perfect and close to Toronto, Canada which is another of my personal fav cities 👏
If you like the hot sauce style wing, you gotta try a little celery seed in it and let it simmer a few minutes. Just like an 1/8th of a teaspoon. It makes such a huge difference.
Notes taken. Thank you
@@doubleoyimmy1572 Nice. I hope you try it. Whenever I see recipes on YT for wings they never add the celery seed. I literally can't stop taking spoons of the stuff and downing it. Oh I also put a couple dashes of Worcestershire sauce in it too. But not all the time, so that could be optional. And a random tid bit, all of the stuff besides butter can be found behind a bar for that sauce.
@@robertm4050 yeah mate Worcestershire is a must 🔥👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼
@@rossobreezy Yeah. The stuff is just so f-ing tasty. I keep sipping on it like a nice bourbon until the wings are ready to be coated.
It reinforced my suspicions about why you would eat it with celery and either ranch or blue cheese sauce. The celery is to reinforce the flavor of the seeds, and the ranch or blue cheese sauce is to balance the acid of the hot sauce style wing.
Munchies is knocking it out of the park with these Buffalo Features. Recently Southern Junction (Best BBQ I have ever had, FACTS !) Now this ? Awesome !
Now I'll be waiting for a piece about Beef on Weck and fish fries.
Touching story glad it was shared . Never heard of this story glad i did !!!
I'm always looking for new (to me) wing places in Buffalo. Will def be going to get the Mumbo wings and from now on I will be telling the correct story of how they were invented by John Young.
They weren’t Mumbo wings were Invented by Asian immigrant’s in the dc area, maybe he invented the buffalo sauce but for sure didn’t invent Mumbo it was in dc before New York
This was a really nice video. Thanks for producing it. I never knew this history. It’s not really widely known and I’ll always share the true wing story.
Stories like this need to reach the most people possible. This man and his family deserve to be revered and forever linked to chicken wings.
Ya because she conveniently made the time line work in her favor.
Really enjoy this video. Food history is one of my favorite subjects
I'm from Buffalo and though I was vaguely aware of the mumbo wing, I can't say I ever had a chance to try it. This video was eye opening, and though I live in Denver now, next time I'm home to visit friends and family I will definitely be taking a trip to the Broadway Market.
Great story, thanks for sharing!
It have lived in buffalo for 11 years. My mom was born here. I really want to go meet lina and tell her I seen this story on viceland and of course try the mumbo wing for the first time. She is cool!! 😊❤

Buffalo wings are the greatest thing ever made. I have been an addict ever since I was a kid. I just can't get enough.
They’re first ballot hall of fame lol
Couldn't help it. I admit it. I cried.
Big ups to John Young !
Never realized Mr. Young came to Decatur, IL for a while. I wonder if there's any historical records of that in the city.
The food and restaurant industry owe this man a debt of gratitude and a honor of some kind..beautiful foods and arts came from a pain and struggle
I am born and raised in Buffalo, spent the first 32 yrs of my life there. I never heard of John Young wings. Always associated mumbo wings with DC. This was eye opening. FYI Anchor Bar wings were always considered tourist trap with everyone I knew. There were way better wings. Nice to see Buffalo food scene get some publicity.
