This series is one of my absolute favorites! I feel like it is so underrated, especially after how Truth of the Divine absolutely destroyed me. Thank you for covering it! Also I can't wait to read your books!
Lindsay Ellis was once in my top 10 favourite RUclipsrs, and I was so devastated when she left. I bought Axiom's End, thinking that it might cheer me up a bit, which was a mistake, since I wasn't at all prepared for how intense it was. I think I'll wait until the series is complete, and then work my way through them. On an unrelated note, I came here from the latest Fantasy News, and of all the books you've reviewed, I'm most interested in the Cinder series. I overlooked them when I was in high school and dismissed it as 'another cringey YA romance' [I was going through a bit of a literary elitist phase, which I've since grown out of], but now I'm really eager to check them out!
Oh my gosh, I didn't know book 3 was out! Thanks for that! Lindsay Ellis is such a gem, and I do miss her videos, but at least we get her books! This is a really great review! Came over from Daniel's channel, and your videos are definitely solid. I look forward to reading your books when the Kickstarter delivers! (Well, when I dwindle down my TBR; let's be real.)
Seeing how her writing evolves with each book is a real pleasure. I didn't get into the story or characters until the second book, and I'm happy I didn't abandon it on the first. And man do I love those covers!
The funny thing about her "cancellation" for me is that when I got out of the cinema from watching Raya, I was actually over the moon because of how many similarities it has with the themes of Avatar lmao. It's not because it's an Asian setting. That really showed me how inept people are at critical thinking. Great video too, I will go out of my way and pick these up now 😊
I just love your passion and enthusiasm. It is front and center in all of your videos. And nearly 200 backers already for your Kickstarter! I brought the campaign to Petrik's attention. Hopefully he'll mention it in an upcoming video and give you some well deserved exposure. 🤞
i've read all three as they have come out. and i share your opinion. they do get better. and tbh i did like axiom's end better than truth of the divine, but that's because i didn't like the ending and i thought it was a duology. but then we got book 3 and apostles of mercy is indeed the best. content warning about gore though. i told someone "the problem with reading gore is that you cannot look away and wait for it to be order like with a movie. you need to read it yourself in order for the scene to pass".
I never thought I would’ve been a reader but I’ve picked up a few new novels and it’s a truly unique experience and Im now hooked. I need a hobby that was good for the brain and not on a screen.
Please please please review Timeriders by Alex Sparrow. I just finished reading his first book in the series and the writing is really good, but then I looked online and hardly anybody has read the series. I am shocked that it hasn't taken off. It's aimed at teen-agers but I'm a grown man and I enjoyed it so yeah, please, give that series some love
About aliens with one characteristic, it’s hilarious in the series 'Lower Decks' from Star Trek when a scientific Orion appears and they make the comment: 'Obviously, not all Orions can be pirates. Someone has to build the ships!"
18:19 - I would quibble a little though, in that just because a book explores or tells you very clearly what the writer[ and/or their written characters/world/story/whatever] thinks...that doesn't necesssrily automatically equate to them literally trying to control how other people think?😅 People should be allowed to talk clearly and openly about what they think, too, not only raise questions or food for thought for others to answer for themselves. There is a difference, for example, between me saying that I don't like lemons or that I think lemon is a gross flavor versus me actually trying to force anyone else to feel the same about lemon themselves....and this can still be true, sometimes, even in situations where someone might legitimately believe and/or legit be saying that they think it would be better if other people believed that particular way. And... The thing is, even if they WERE trying to convince other people to believe the ways they think people should, they still don't actually control what other people think even if they might want to, the reader is still free to think differently even when absorbing a piece of fiction by or about someone else that thinks not at all the same way. Just because something is uncomfortable or heavy handed or unliked doesn't necessarily mean it was poorly written, even though it might be perfectly understandable why it might not be to every reader's preference or even if something is legitimately appalling or rude/offensive/whatever-else, especially if it was deliberately so. But..maybe that's just me.😊😅😅😁
I love Lindsay’s videos, so I bought the first two books. I DNF’d the first about a third-to-half of the way through. Not sure if it was just not the right time for me or what, but I’m glad to hear you speak so positively about them. I’ve since sold my copy, so I may check it out from the library at some point to try again.
I have no opinion about the cancel controversy (although I did watch Ellis's video about it), but I liked _Raya and the Last Dragon_ (especially the puppy joke).
This video come on good time I was looking for a good sci-fi series, thank you! Also, if you don’t mind, I was considering opening a youtube channel about books, I really was inspired by your videos and the way you presented every books and make it very interesting, it’s been over half a year thinking if I can make the same quality content but I want to do it in Arabic language for Arabian book community to share and raise it more because I think it’s a little bit small and kinda rare to see really good content from books youtubers, Sorry if my English is bad and I didn’t explain what I said in good way, I just felt like I need a permission from you because you inspired the idea in me the most and even brought back my love for reading again, so yeah… can I please do kinda similar but also different content and way of presenting books to others in Arabic language and for arabic books? It will not have your idea of monthly themes!
That's really exciting! By all means, you have my blessing. Just a few tips with a youtube booktube channels: success is very rare and if it comes at all, it takes years. It's a constant learning experience and you'll make lots of mistakes. And it can be very unpredictable, where some videos do terribly and others do well. But you can really inspire people to read more, and that's always a good thing. 😁 Also you can absolutely do monthly themes! Content creators steal from each other all the time!!
@@cronkthebookguyTHANK YOU SO MUCH 😭😭✨✨ and thank you for the tips, I will remember it and study my way through making a great channel like you some day carefully!
16:31 - I agree with you.... but I thought she also made some other tweet about a different movie involving a slave / master relationship which set people off even more than the Raya comparison?🤔🤔 Maybe I'm misremembering something. Maybe that was just one of the many things the online masses dug up dogpile on her as allegedly establishing a problematic pattern of behavior or such. 😅🙃 👀
For a strange RUclipsr book month challenge, you could try the Critical Drinker. His books, under his actual name Will Jordan, are an interesting example of practice what you preach. He was an author before he was a youtuber and his almost religious focus on tight stories and cutting all extraneous material is conveyed in his books. Action rather than fantasy and seriously dark at times. But an interesting reversal - author first, then youtuber.
I had high hopes from Ellis, I have enjoyed her RUclips over the years. Honestly, I found the writing in the first book to be completely mediocre, the characters not interesting, and the aliens not well-developed. As many have suggested, the first book read like a Michael Bay Transformers fanfic. Way too much about the aliens was left for the second book, so the first book felt a bit of a let-down. I kinda felt like I was reading a novelization of an already existing movie. I just did not feel motivated to read further.
I felt the same way, and I didn't pick up the second book until early this year (and thinking I was gonna be bored again). Luckily I was wrong! The pace and plot were so much better! And the characters felt more realistic. So, if you have some curiosity about how it all develops, give it a go. It gets better.
You are a breath of fresh air! Love your enthusiasm and systematic approach, subscribed!

Never got around to reading her books, but it seems like a must now.
Preordered the first book before it came out and still haven’t gotten to this. I’m ready to be convinced!

11:21 initially Cora was meant to be 16/17 which is why she’s comes across a bit younger than she’s meant to be at times

*happy squealing* is this the part where we chant Lower Decks together?

When an Aussie tries to pronounce Numenor
I am pretty sure I was subscribed to you. RUclips is annoying.
The moment I heard the name Kaveh, I decided to read the book; always interesting to see the view of a foreigner on Iranians.
