    My intro to Alden shoes was through a decade old pair handed down to me from one of my dad's friends. Those shoes were in great shape for that age. I wore them another 12 years! Resoling extended their life a few years, again and again. They looked fantastic (they still sell it) took all weather, fit and felt like gloves. How do Luos Jiet's knock-offs of Alden Indys actually perform? In rain and snow? How repairable they are? How do they age? If they don't go a few years and perform well in all weather, $239 is still too expensive. Used Alden Indy's start around $250 , and identical knock-offs from China start around ~$100.

  • @olgi2068
    @olgi2068 8 месяцев назад +2

    Regarding Alden: I bought a pair of Indies some three years ago for 650€ in Europe. Now, the very same boot costs 850€ (in Germany). 650€ was already steep and more justified by the comfort than the materials etc. However, at 850€ I got a pair of John Lofgren, which are IMHO more shoe for the money, super comfy, and just a beautiful boot. So Alden has overdone it for me personally.
    Now regarding the Luosjiet boots: I would NOT support that clear knockoff of so many classics. Not that the Aldens are worth their money, but everyone should know that a boot like that at a third of the price, actually comes with a price! That price will not be payed by the buyer but most likely by the people producing them. Furthermore, there should be something like respect for a classic. Taking any heritage boot that sells well and reproduce it, is shamefull to me. I am not trying to be the moral guy here, but this is clearly crossing a line for me personally that I don´t want to cross.
    I am really not trying to disrespect you at all. I enjoy your content and expertise, Dale, but with all due respect, you have hundreds of boot pairs, why that? This is to me kind of supporting consumerism at any cost. I honestly hope you get my point and do not feel offended. I mean well ;-)

    Luos Jiet is XBXS and XBXS is Luos Jiet. Two names, one factory, one company.
    I have a couple pairs of their stuff that I've bought in China: A pair of derbies and boondockers. They're pretty good looking but the one Achilles' heel of this brand which almost all of the long-term reviews raise is the squeak. They don't do anything to stop squeak and virtually everything is going to start squeaking eventually if it doesn't do so right out of the box.
    Decent value otherwise, though, especially if you get their seconds.

  • @aradoran
    @aradoran 8 месяцев назад +4

    I was “lucky” enough to pick up some Alden 401 factory seconds a while back - my first pair of Alden’s. I’ve really enjoyed them but even for seconds the price was astronomical. That said I refuse to purchase a straight copy like these Luosjiet. There are other high quality faux moc toes on the market that at least use their own pattern (Parkhurst Niagara and Grant Stone Ottawa which is an NST). I’m sure there are others.
    It’s dishonest for Luosjiet to say “this is our boot” when it is quite clearly a theft of the Alden Indy design.

All solvable but realized I got what I paid for.

    • @SmoothGuyTO
      @SmoothGuyTO 7 месяцев назад +2

      Just received these boots today. The brown grain cowhide leather is very chromexcel like so I would consider this boot their 403 copy. It's a warm medium brown color and has great pull-up effect. It scratches but then you can rub the mark away with your finger. Taken together with the interior leather lining, the leather seems thicker and stiffer than on my Indy 401s. The welt and welt stitching are very clean. The soles look like a Vibram v-bar but in brown color. The heel is shaped like an Alden Thomas heel. These don't feel like a cheap knock-off. My first impressions out of the box are very positive.

    This is a big problem for me. There is a place for "inspired by" but these are a direct copy and one could argue "theft" of the IP that Alden possesses. Likely, there are no design patents owned by Alden that are still enforceable, but come on.

    • @unachimba9
      @unachimba9 8 месяцев назад +1

      genuine question what is the arguable theft of IP. If you are going to say one could argue 'theft' then how could one argue it? Is it arguable patent, trademark or copyright?

    • @RockandrollNegro
      @RockandrollNegro 8 месяцев назад +3

      That's ridiculous. This style and pattern has been in the public domain for 83 years. Anyone can make a version of it. Your argument seems to be that copyrights and patents should never expire, that there should be no such thing as public domain. That's a very antiamerican, anticapitalist stance.
      Do you have the same attitude towards _Dracula_ and _Sherlock Holmes_ and think that nobody but Bram Stoker and Arthur Conan Doyle should be writing their books and making their films? Do you think that only Ford should be allowed to have airconditioning in their cars, or that only General Motors should be allowed to have automatic transmissions, since they took out the original patents decades ago? Should RCA be the only company allowed to manufacture LCD monitors, since they patented LCD televisions in 1962?
      Your argument holds no water. There's no such thing as "copying" a patentless design. Now, if the design was currently patented and protected in commerce, or if this company was making actual counterfeits with "Alden" logos stamped in the leather, you'd have an argument. Anyone can make a cowboy hat, as long as they don't stamp the word "Stetson" on it.

    It makes me very uncomfortable to see a company just straight up copy designs and make knockoffs. Would you have the same perspective if they copied your backpacks and sold them 3x cheaper than you? They are just doing a 'high quality imitation', so all good in the hood right?
    Most of the work when it comes to new boot designs is well, in the design stage. It's months and months of work: designing, testing, producing, trying different leathers, outsoles, changing the last, trying again, customer response... That's the real work and genius of these classic boot designs.
    Think of Grant Stone. They made their own designs and lasts that took months and months of work. If this company copied Grant Stone straight up, I'm pretty sure Wyatt would feel a punch in the gut if he saw the copies being promoted on RUclips.

    • @DalesLeatherworks
      @DalesLeatherworks  8 месяцев назад

      You’re right and yes a direct copy would make me feel uncomfortable but it’s almost inevitable as I’m finding other backpacks now that are similar in design to mine that have been made for years. Sometimes a copy can happen by mistake. In this case it’s not a mistake but I just wanted to rate them by what I saw. Thanks for your thoughtful feedback brother!

    • @Thunk00
      @Thunk00 2 месяца назад

      It's just the market in China. Homage shoes and boots are what sell best. There are lots of great small-scale high quality shoemakers running online stores in China now in the $150-300 USD bracket and lots of them are making cool original designs -- personally some of my favorites are Shonest and Gresgris -- but you scroll through their Taobao stores, and it's always like everything just has just one or two sales within the last month except for their one Red Wing or White's or Rolling Dub Trio homage that has dozens of sales.
      You ask me, that's on the customers.

    Its because China is selling this product direct from the factory to you the buyer whereas, American Boot Manufacturers sell their boots through Shoe retailers, and that adds to the final cost of the boot. Other variables are at play that fall in the realm of production. This boot might be made in half the time it takes Alden to make the same boot. If Alden decided to sell direct the boot’s price would fall is the main issue here. That Alden cannot and would not sell direct to the consumer is the political side of the main issue. It makes perfect sense a straight line between the consumer and all factories for all goods be the way to go to lower prices generally. Deep inside I am sure Alden would agree. But the rational thing to do evokes irrational responses in America as a rule. Alden would be the brunt of allegations and conspiracy of a Chinese take over, charges levelled, tried in court, by all kinds of Legal teams representing American Business Associations. The sky would be falling if Alden adopted the Chinese model. Imagine if Ford decided to sell direct to the consumer how the Ford dealerships would react? A national crisis. It would work out in practice as it does in theory that if the seller and manufacturer are one and the same entity and no other influences occur the price of the boot would fall is a saving for the consumer.
