Big Daddy was the model for ALL rappers, regardless if he was actually the best or not. But when you look at the game, especially during the Golden Age, Kane was the one who provided the flows that encapsulated nearly every style before and after him.

Glad they asked that question about how he felt being compared to Rakim. I always felt like people just wrote Kane off, as if he isn't one of the greatest. I always felt like it was close, but I give Rakim the edge because his rhymes were deeper and they stood for something. Metaphorically, Kane was better. Unfortunately, dudes today don't know what lyricism really is, and think it's nothing but metaphors, deep artists like Rakim couldn't exist today without dumbing down their rhymes.

Rakim to Big Daddy Kane in "Follow The Leader"
A furified freestyle, lyrics of fury
My third eye makes me shine like jewelry
    You're just a rent-a-rapper, your rhymes are minute-maid
I'll be here when it fade to watch you flip like a renegade
I can't wait to break and eliminate
On every traitor or snake, so stay awake
And follow and follow, because the tempo's a trail
The stage is a cage, the mic is a third rail
I'm Rakim, the fiend of a microphone
I'm not him, so leave my mic alone
Soon as the beat is felt, I'm ready to go
So fasten your seatbelt, 'coz I'm about to flow
No need to speed slow down to let the leader lead
    Word to DADDY, indeed
The R's a rollin' stone, so I'm rollin'
Directions is told, then the rhymes are stolen
Stop buggin', a brother said, "Dig 'em, I never dug 'em"
He couldn't follow the leader long enough so I drug 'em
Into danger zone, he should arrange his own
Face it, it's basic, erase it, change ya tone
Coz there's one R in the alphabet
    It's a one-letter word and it's about to get
More complex from one rhyme to the next
Eric B be easy on the flex
I've been from state to state, followers tailgate
Keep comin' but you came too late, but I'll wait
So back up, regroup, get a grip, come equipped
You're the next contestant, clap ya hands, you won a trip
The price is right, don't make a deal too soon
How many notes could you name this tune?
Follow the leader is the title, theme, task
Now ya know, you don't have to ask
Rap is rhythm and poetry, cuts create sound effects
You might catch up if you follow the records E.Wrecks
Until then keep eatin' and swallowin'
You better take a deep breath and keep followin' the leader
    Follow the leader BOOOM!

    • @toadstyle101
      @toadstyle101 10 лет назад +2

Actually, Erick Sermon said in an interview that the lines from "A brother said dig 'em, I never dug 'em" to "change ya tone" were aimed at EPMD (I'm guessing more towards Parrish Smith), because of the fact that in EPMD's song "You're A Customer", Parrish rapped "smack me and I'll smack you back" which sounded like (as mentioned in Nas' song U.B.R.) a response to Eric B & Rakim's "I Ain't No Joke" line "you could get a smack for this, I ain't no joke".

    • @periechontology

That's ridiculous, EPMD only really made it with Strictly Business which came out like two months before Follow The Leader. And as you know, these records are typically recorded as much as a year before they are released.

Ok I used to think that talk was instigating, cause I think that either of them would call the other out bc of how established they were, but those bars starting w "I can't wait to break and eliminate" are MASTERFUL using against, mocking, and paying respect Kane's style. Thank you for putting it in this context.

It Was Craig Mack And The Track Was "Flava In Ya Ear" Remix.
In Biggie's Verse He Says "Disappear, vamoose, you're wack to me
Take them rhymes back to the factory
I see the gimmicks, the wack lyrics, the shit is
    Depressing, pathetic, please forget it
You're mad cause my style you're admiring
Don't be mad, UPS is hiring
You shoulda been a cop, fuck Hip Hop
With that freestyle you're bound to get shot"
YOU HEAR THEM TAKING SUBLIMINAL SHOTS AT EACHOTHER

Big put Method on Ready to Die as the only guest feature on that joint...I think it's safe to say they were buddies and that Big had tremendous respect for Method.
Big and Jay had several collabs: Brooklyn's Finest, I Love the Dough, etc.

To Kwasimseven. Your information about Kane not wanting to battle Rakim is WRONG!! What happened was that Van Silk who was behind Rap Mania in 1990 wanted to host the battles with Roxanne Shante vs. Sparky B, LL cool j vs Moe Dee and Rakim vs. Kane. Van Silk asked Kane to see if Rakim would want to do the battle which each one would receive about $75,000. Kane did not know rakim like that but he did know Eric B. Eric B. spoke to Rakim about it. Rakim did not reply back. LL cool j was going to battle Moe Dee only if Rakim and Kane were willing to do the battle. If you want to know why that battle never took place, you need to email rakim to see why the battle never happened. You should not put inconclusive information out there without checking out your facts. In fact, to say Kane ducked a battle is ludicrous. He is a stone cold battle mc. If you're not sure about something like that, then say so. You will have people believing inconclusive information and thinking things like that are true. Just get the facts first before committing to making strong allegations like that.

rakim didnt want to battle kane because that wasnt what kane wanted , kane never said himself i want to battle rakim, so Ra told him to not let the people come between them and make them battle each other and start something what the ppl want and not them, u can see it too rakim talks about it search rakim on bdk

040yeah What you are speaking about here is different from what I spoke about earlier about the Rap Mania Battle. However, I am going to send you a link where Big Daddy Kane addresses what you are speaking about AND about the Rap Mania Battle that did not happen between Rakim and Big Daddy Kane.
To hear just that part of the interview, it starts at 70:00 minutes and ends around 76:00 minutes into the interview. Or, you can just sit through the entire 2 hour and 20 minute interview. still rakim wouldve made big daddy look foolish, no one can match ra's lyricism, theres a huge difference between kane's verses and rakims ra is extraordinary

as nasty a lyricist as Rakim is, I believe on stage BDK in a head-to-head wdv won. Rakim is probably the better man on records when you catch what he's saying.

Tresidential oh yeah sry lol didnt notice but in a battle on stage kane wouldve won cuz he can rap circles around u lol but as u said on records i Think rakim is way better
