Gangstas don't really exist. Theres two types of people in the street. 1. There are guys who do things for money, but it's really not them. Their plan is to get paid and get out, but sometimes they get shot or locked up/caught up. Outside of getting caught up, they don't want their activities known. Sure they do things people consider gangster, but it's not really who they are. It'sa means to an end. And 2. Is guys who emulate the first group and mimic something that's not them, but they want to be "known" as gangstas. They are real flashy and trying to be seenas something they're not for a reputation. Neither is really a gangster, both will do things square people consider gangster and get labeled as something they're not, but they each have different motivations.

Real OG I grew up in the 80s hip hop was so dope and fresh back then. Ra was a true lyricist. The fact that he didn't want to glorify his street life speaks volumes. He was always conscious of the power of music.
The type of lyrics he was spitting in the 80's was before his time and separated him from the other party rappers that was rapping simple rhymes and party songs. Rakim is one of the if not the pioneer of lyrical rap.

Melle Mel who Rakim studied is the Pioneer of Lyrical rap. He invented the term emcees (not M.C.) also. Kool Moe Dee is also a pioneer of word play and flows, he invented super fast rhyming and thesaurus heavy words. Grandmaster Caz is a lyrical pioneer on the story telling, clever word play, humorous hard core style of rapping. They all had songs before 82 out. They all were rhyming in the 70s. Rakim is the extension of them and he admits that.
I just got goose bumps and teary eyed. Paid and full was the first rap album i ever heard at 5 years old. He didnt curse so i had free reign to listen to it at any time and moms didnt complain. I'm glad you had Rakim on the show. He's one of the most down to earth brother's outside of entertainment I had the opportunity meeting back in the day. ICE-T and his entourage were doing a concert in North Carolina, with Dougie Fresh, KRS One, and Eric- B and Rakim. After the show, I stood in the parking lot and saw Rakim walking with his people... I said Peace God to him, and He stopped, and turned to me and greeted me with the mathematics on the spot... He took the time to build with me on degrees and I knew then that he's one of the nicest , realest brother's you'll ever wanna meet. Peace to you Rakim, and to the Breakfast Club. Great interview.

I didnt grow up on hip hop. I grew up on gospel. So I heard his music unbiased with fresh ears. I was introduced to Paid in Full at 18 by my then girlfriend from New York nearly 20 years after it came out....and needless to say I BINGED his music. Still sounded fresh and novel to me then. This man needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap and preserved. 51 years old...we all still get excited to see this man being interviewed over 30 years later on one of the biggest platforms in the world. RAKIM is easily the greatest EMCEE I’ve ever heard. His rhyme schemes, cadence, demeanor, knowledge, that quiet rage and energy made him seem like he was way older than his age when he first came out. I was a senior in high school when Paid in Full dropped, I wore that tape out, had to keep rewinding in amazement. I lost count of how many times I bought that album. ICE-T and his entourage were doing a concert in North Carolina, with Dougie Fresh, KRS One, and Eric- B and Rakim. After the show, I stood in the parking lot and saw Rakim walking with his people... I said Peace God to him, and He stopped, and turned to me and greeted me with the mathematics on the spot... He took the time to build with me on degrees and I knew then that he's one of the nicest , realest brother's you'll ever wanna meet. Peace to you Rakim, and to the Breakfast Club. Great interview.

I didnt grow up on hip hop. I grew up on gospel. So I heard his music unbiased with fresh ears. I was introduced to Paid in Full at 18 by my then girlfriend from New York nearly 20 years after it came out....and needless to say I BINGED his music. Still sounded fresh and novel to me then. This man needs to be wrapped in bubble wrap and preserved.

RAKIM is easily the greatest EMCEE I’ve ever heard. His rhyme schemes, cadence, demeanor, knowledge, that quiet rage and energy made him seem like he was way older than his age when he first came out.
I was a senior in high school when Paid in Full dropped, I wore that tape out, had to keep rewinding in amazement. I lost count of how many times I bought that album.
