I've been waiting forever for you to do these videos Matt!..This was very good and you've made a good point with the Nutaba's and how they work. Ken has explained them and now to see them work is pretty convincing. Thanks, now I'm off to watch the rest of the vids!
Good to see you're not a razor snob. The Gold Dollars are very underrated, I cant tell the difference in performance between a well prepared GD and a good vintage razor. Because they are so cheap, I use a separate razor for each of my finishing stones for a good comparison.
Not a razor snob but have been accused of being an edge snob! I do the same thing in that I have dedicated razors to my different stones. Most are GDs as that's pretty much all I shave with these days.
drmatt357 To me, there is no such thing as an edge snob ( I probably am one too ). I must get some CBN or Diamond sprays to see if I can improve on the edges I have atm. I'm just not fond of pasted or sprayed strops. I know you like them, do you think they make a big difference on a Ozuko or Suehiro 20k edge.
I've never used the suehiro but have heard good things about it. That stone is a half micron but the sprays can go to a 1/10 micron and smaller so they can refine the edge more. If you'd like the feel of the edge better... I don't know. Regarding the Ozuko, that's a natural stone and I never use the sprays or any pastes on a natural stone finish. That would be cheating. ;-)
drmatt357 Thanks. I guess there's only one way to find out. I have the same thoughts about using sprays or pastes on naturals as well. You should give the Suehiro a go, the edge that I get off mine seems to produce a better edge than any of my other stones, not by much, but it gives a really sharp and smooth edge at the same time. Your Nakayama could beat it, and it also depends on what type of edge you like. It's also, almost too easy to get a great edge as well. I still like naturals more though.
A diamond plate creates a different pattern than a stone but this was many years ago and if it were today, I wouldn't waste time on a second 400, I'd just go to a 1K either stone or diamond plate.
@@drmatt357 I agree diamond stone creates more scratches patterns , deeper and more irregular but starting with diamond stones should be avoided. In my opinion artisans professional go with diamond plate in the first creation of a bevel ( 220 grit diamond) just for speed the process and probably the will correct the profile of the teeth reaching the same like it would be like starting with a ceramic stone or a natural stone! But I'm not sur it is identical because particles of abrasives of natural stones have a round form cintra to syntetic or to diamond stones that steel cause the worst scratches possible! Convertiing these scratches into identical scratches of a sintetic or natural stones for my experience is impossible! Is like using a syntetic and pretend to have the same teeth of a natural stone just because the last part of honing was on a natural stone! Perhaps I'm wrong but a microscope can tell you this to you better than me probably!
Why would you use tape on the spine if you're trying to set the bevel? If you want to properly level the sides of the razor, how could you do that if you cover half of it with tape? That's kind of like having the front end of your car misaligned and telling the mechanic that he can only adjust the left wheel. It may end up going straight if he over corrects the right wheel but certainly not ideal. ;-)
if i wanted to set a bevel with a1k diamond plate. do i just go straight from the diamond plate to like a 5k or go to a 1k actual stone then 5k im using a cktg 400/1000 grit diamond plate and using a a few superstones
You can go from a 1K diamond to a 5K regular stone. I did that for years. I've since found the 400 diamond to a 1K traditional stone like a Chosera 1K works better because the 1K diamond makes deep scratches that can take work on the 5K to remove. The Chosera doesn't do that.
Very helpful and informative. Really liked the close-up pictures of the blade. Thanks.
Awesome videos! Nice “WOW” poster also!

If it's too easy and you like a challenge, try some coticules. They will Humble you!
Do you suggest using just a 400 diamond stone or others as well? I have. Belgian bluestone.
Where can you buy pre damaged tap washers to give that perfect drip effect you use to lube the stones? :o) Ha Ha.
Why didn't you use only the Nubatama 400 if this is thr same grit of Atoma 400?

are u got spine wear when u honing, as i see u use low grits 400k and 1 k..,and u not use tape on the spine?

i agree with u but as i see many put the tape on the spine to protect spine from wear and scratch
milijanb That reminds me of some girls I used to date. They looked really good but...
not good in the bed,xd

Gold dollars are cheap. Like those who promote them.
