    did you try the trailing on the coticule? Will that make the stone finer? I've seen the coticule series you done, it was fantastic, but I just wanna know if that works as well? As well as on the jnat. thx

    I'm currently waiting on a Shapton 12k from Japan,
    I have a generic 3/8k and a cheap 10k but this will be my first premium finishing stone.
    Have you any experience with the 12k shapton?

    Hello Dr. Matt, new to your videos and I love them. Honestly I have had a straight razor for a couple years now but don't have the funds to have it periodically sent to be honed. Just got my set of stones from Naniwa at 5000 8000 and 12000 before discovering your videos. Are you using your diamond 400 to flatten all of your stones? would that not damage the higher grain stones? I am just getting around to honing myself. Thank you for your instructional videos!

      You're Welcome Jason. I do use my 400 to flatten the stones. It is very worn though. If your razor already shaves, you really only need to go 8k then 12. I'm coming out soon with a video on refreshing the edge.
      You may want to watch my part 1 coticule series as I have a free honing offer at the end... the very end.

      I took the information from this series and honed my razor! The difference was like trying to cut a steak with a plastic spoon then finally being handed a knife. Wonderful set of information, THANK YOU! 100/10

    hi there! I have a question, I have a 1,2,and 5 thousand grit shapton stones and when I am done getting rid of the damage on my knife on the 1k grit and move to the 2k grit how would I know that I would be done on the 2k to move on to the 5k?

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  9 лет назад

      You will get feedback from the knife. It usually feels like a resistance that releases for the entire pass down the edge of the knife, both sides.

      sooooo form a burr?

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  9 лет назад

      +bushcraft fancy You should do the burr formation at the beginning if it's 600 or whatever. What I mean is when you start at 2K and run the blade over it, you'll feel some resistance. As you work it, that feel should go away and it glides easier as it converts the the 1K scratches to 2K. That's when you move to the 5 and it should be the same there.

      +drmatt357 k thx! so there will be resistance when you first start sharpening but it will smoothen out over time? and when you say it being able to glide do you mean like being able to move it through the stone with little to no preassure at all?

    Hey, I see you use the shapton pro series for razor honing as well! I know most prefer shapton glass, however I really like the pro stones and was wondering what you think of them as well. Also do you go all the way through 12k/16k before going to your preferred finish?

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  10 лет назад

      I've never used the Shapton glass stones. I would be a little gun shy in that they are very thin and it seems they would wear out pretty quick if you were to keep them properly lapped.
      If I go to 12/16k, that would be my finish. If I finish on a natural stone, I'll usually stop at 5K.

    How much pressure do you use at this point? I mean 2k-5k?

    • @drmatt357
      @drmatt357  10 лет назад

      I would say a medium amount of pressure where as in the previous video I lean on it pretty hard. I start with more pressure here on the back and forth and circles. Lighten up as I go and by the time I'm doing X strokes under running water, it's light pressure.

    Why do you call it honing? This is sharpening and not honing as i understand it ?
