Hi Dr. Matt, great video as always. A question: what happen if you try to hone the razor without slurry? And if you try to hone with only backstrokes (as Murray Carter do)? Personally I'm feeling very very good with M. Carter technique; infact I use that for my whole progression (1000 -3000 5000-8000-12000 - CrOx 0.5 0.3 CrOx leather - leather). Thank you very much. ;)
The slurry with a JNAT facilitates edge refinement. The more you work it, it breaks down to a finer and finer powder. I've heard that it can approach grit equivalents of 130,000. So the slurry is beneficial. I think if you don't use slurry on a Japanese stone, you won't get nearly edge. Unlike a coticule where the garnets don't break down and the slurry has a toxic effect on the edge. Regarding Murray's trailing passes, I do use them. I don't do the entire honing that way but if it works for you, keep it up.
Good question John. Yes, I still use the nano cloth with the CBN sprays but not when I hone on a natural stone. I try and keep them separate, mostly from a purist perspective. My goal is to get an amazing edge strictly from the stone. It's rewarding to be able to take a piece of metal and rub it on a rock only and create an incredibly keen yet comfortable edge. I have done some hybrid edges that work really well tho.
You have very nice strops there, but i don t think that all that stroping is mandatory to get a good edge.I bet that 50 on that nice leather one first leather you used is more than sufficient to get hht5 if properly honed. Also on a good jnat 100 strokes are enough even if one hone stone method used. But hey if that works for you...that s nice.
viorel petrean - Yeah, I don’t disagree with you Viorel. This was 5 years ago and it seems as I get old, I do less and less. Now I’ll go off the stone first time, 20 linen then 40 leather. Just before every shave I go maybe 10 & 10. I also go less time on the stones too. Saves the razor, stones and my joints. 😏 Thanks for stopping by.
Well, being a natural stone, they don't have grit ratings because... well they're natural! But, if I had to put it in a ball park, it is a finishing stone so around a 12-15K.
hi doc, I really enjoyed your videos. what else could I use instead of nubatama 400 and 1000 as they are hard to find? I plan on getting the 400 atoma and a 2000 or 3000 stone. I already have naniwas 1000 5000 8000 and 12000. and is there any other synthetic you can recommend to finish? thanks
I've been doing it a little different lately. If it needs the 400 diamond, then a 1200 diamond, then a 1k. Your Naniwa should be fine. If you don't have chips or major geometry issues, your set up is fine. Should be able to get great edges from it.
Wow! I didn’t notice how buff you are Drmatt! You’re like a Superman haha
Awesome series DM
Excellent set of videos! Very enlightening. Could you tell the brand/model of the microscope. The pictures are very clear.
"No dumb questions mate! " See this one :)
What are those red-black circular things you put under the stone?
I saw them at some other folks, too.
Bench Dogs. Raise the stone off the bench so you have room for your hand and provide cushion and are non slip. They're on Amazon.
drmatt357 Thanks Dr.
Great info!
Great vids Doc Matt. Where can I get a T-shirt like that one? Crackin me up.
just found I got the most amazing edge using 0.5 micron paste after newspaper, and finally with leather strop
Nice video Matt!
Thanks Magnus. I don't have the cool sound track but at least I have the pretty girl!
also, for me, i only get comfortable shave with hair root facing in on the hht
Hi Doc, what's the sharpest you ever got a Sr & what stones did you use?

I noticed that u didn't strop on cbn/nanocloth as in your previous vids. Have u stopped using the strop sprays in favor of leather only?

What kind of USB scope you use? Thanks!
Brian Payne - The slides in this series were done with a Veho 400. On Amazon. I think they’re about $80 these days.
can you do the HHT root in?

Good going as usual sir.

What is the grit on the natural Stone?

Thanks for replying and I'll check out the atoma 1200 as well
