I can easily explain why we struggle in Britain to get new blood in The army:
The money is not that great.
The conditions aren't very good. (soldiers often buy their own kit)
If they leave, they're basically abandoned.
You'd be better off working in a factory, packing vegetables.
Same in Canada. There are few benefits, many detractors. The idea of patriotic service is also at a historical low.
LOL you're so wrong. I can easily explain, when you import nothing but 3rd worlders you really expect them to die for their "new country" LOL you're so wrong. Get rid of the Muslims and watch recruitment go back up. Keep lying to yourself tho.
@@Matthew10950 Oh so it's not the fact your PM brought in close to 30k people to replace the white Canadians with Indians and Sikhs. You expect them to die for a Canada? god the brainwash in people is out of this world.
Come to Australia
I'm pretty sure the transfer would be smooth considering your nationality.
I think a major component you missed in the resistance to conscription, is that there is little belief that the government and military actually has our best interests anymore. Housing is increasingly unaffordable across the west, everything is more expensive, while the middle class is shrinking, and the wealth divide grows. And many of us still remember Iraq and Afghanistan. Many would argue their country hasn't had a "necessary" war in their lifetime.
So you basically say military wants to send ppl in their death cause of the housing market? Maybe stop smoking crack my friend
I believe a good alternative to conscription is a simple 'boot camp' like program, where men (and women, preferably) learned how to do all the basic soldier skills, so that in the case of actual war they can be called up in a moments notice; also, it would probably be a fun exprience, like a camping trip with the boys.

What has my government ever done for me?
-Robbed me since I started to work.
-Imposed so many silly and oppressive laws on me that I can no longer keep track.
-Tried to brainwash me and my children on a full time basis.
-Spies on everything I do.

Try conscription and see how that goes, lol..
I think we need a regime change, not a war.
We'll probably see another rise in trans-women population. This time not for attention but to avoid conscription. That is if the government doesn't introduce compulsory conscription for women. At first I meant this kinda jokingly... but it's absolutely possible, both of these things.

Why fight for a country that doesn't care about their young people? I'm not in that age bracket, a little older for conscription. But I can certainly understand why young people feel that way, they have little positive outlook for their future, Government that don't care, housing is ridiculous, wars breaking out everywhere and a handful of mega-monopolies controlling a ungodly amount of wealth and power. Give them something worth fighting for and their outlook might change.
The libertarianism that capitalism thrives on makes everyone selfish and isolated. It's overall healthier to be sometimes forced to physically assemble for a common mission, coming together with people you'd otherwise never interact with and disbanding with some new friendships based at least on the shared thought of "well that sucked".
Yeh Scandinavia is a bit unique due to their wealth/smaller populations and quality of life. their education, trades, and armed forces are all very well funded and run. I have Norwegian and Finnish friends that all did their conscription, theres little chance of it setting you back in life, or giving you PTSD or much active service. Its a very normal part of life and more of an adventure than it would be in other countries
@@doujinflipnot believing in fascist ideals is not automatically libertarian.
Generally speaking because the governments that would overtake the current governments would be worse. Just because things in the west are bad doesn't mean that there aren't horribly worse alternatives. I'd rather live in the worst off western democracy than China or Russia.
You’re telling me young men don’t wanna die gruesome deaths in foreign wars if given the choice?
mad hey! Also - all these countries that happily took all the credit for taking in Ukrainian refugees are now saying theyll work with the ukrainian goverment to cut military aged mens visa's/expired passports/deport them back.

Great bit. Unnecessary filter though 😅
Women in Denmark do NOT get conscripted as it stands right now (But that is set to change very soon). However they have the option to volunteer. Basically in Denmark you go to a military base to check your physical health and mental abilities. If you pass, you draw a random number that decide if you are drafted or not. If you draw a non-draft number, you have the option to just volunteer (as I did). If you do draw a draft number, but REALLY cannot get yourself to go through the training, then there is different option in government jobs. Though it is somewhat looked down upon
Feels like a half-fair system, though I must confess, I'd rather let someone look down on me, than having them look down a bit more, so they can read my name on a stone, because I would not make it through basic. I can't stand sleeping in a room with others, don't take well to orders and people shouting at me has a good chance of landing me in trouble for shouting back to let them know how hard they can pound dust. To me, military training is dehumanising. And that is before the sports-part.

I'm curious if the survey about willingness to serve in defense of your country specified if it was actually a defensive war (literally defending home territory) vs "defending" your nation via attacking someone else (or could be deployed to do so). If the survey question didn't put a hard line between those two scenarios, I suspect it significantly brings down the numbers.
Would be low either way as a lot of young people have been alienated by their governments.

No no no that would make too much sense! Are you crazy?!
They're not less likely to fight for their countries if they're richer. They're less likely to fight for their countries if they're not really their countries anymore. The nations whose men are willing to fight have a few things in common, patriotism, homogeneity, and an enemy state in close proximity, collectively leading to a strong sense of national identity. See USA, UK, Germany, France (all sub 45%) vs Scandinavia, Poland, South Korea, Taiwan, etc.
Also, Finland, the Baltic countries and Poland have Russia as their neighbor, Taiwan has continuous pressure from China and IIRC South Korea is still in war with North Korea.
Nationalism being kind of taboo isn't helping your recruitment problems. You really do have to love your country and have pride to fight for it.
Well. I mean when the people in charge are trying to run banana republics/covert socialist facist regimes, then nationalism is their natural enemy.
So yeah, nationalism is dead.. unless a nationalist leader gets elected (which the establishment wont allow, see The Netherlands or Belgium or Germany, or France, etc)
And ofcourse except for the nationalist *against* the puppet goverments. The establishment made the bed. Now it gets to lie in it.
This is the exact mistake our politicians and top military leaders are making. By catering to "woke" recruitment strategies they are alienating the population of young people who would fight for their country.
But does loving your country entail the will to go off and fight a war for another country that more than likely has no bearing on "our way of life" like the Ukraine. recruiting numbers say "NO".
Nationalism =/= patriotism
Nationalisim and patriotism are not the same thing. One can live ones cou try without being extremist. . . .though it does help
As a young American I'd like to give my thoughts on why young folks don't want to join the military. We grew up during the Iraq war and Afghanistan. We saw people we knew come back with missing limbs or not come back at all. And for what? What was the point? Oil and geopolitics? We don't want to kill and die to enrich the military industrial complex. However I will say if there was an actual threat to our country and homes, many would be willing to fight. We just know that our military hasn't been working for our benefit for decades. I fully respect all those who fought and served in the military, this is a critique of those in charge, not those who serve.
I hope many others have this balanced perspective
I totally agree with that sentiment!
Right on my guy
Afghanistan initially made sense...until it turned into nation building and regime change. Two things the United States isn't good at.

Thanks for another good video Simon!
I think the issue with military service for me, with the gift of hind sight, is that out in the work world there are tons of incompetent leaders who make bad calls and are on a constant power trip.
The military has this issue I believe too, and a lot of people are just not interested in listening to bad leaders, and bad policies.
I think the discipline would be worth the experience, but i don't see the military as a career unless you manage to find a good unit with good leadership.
Pay is also a big issue i know for quite a few folks, especially nowadays.
I figure that also the terrible public image a lot of modern governments have/ how terrible they are these days, does not help. No one wants to sign up to die for rich folks and politicians who will never sacrifice anything for those that fight for them.
In regards to the compulsory service. The reality is that people don't see a future in the military.
The wages are incredibly low, The treatment isn't great, and successive governments have shown their incompetence at managing the military and their lack of support to those who have left.
In the UK for example.
Our military is woefully underfunded, its equipment is ageing. The government have shown a tendency to follow the US into entirely unnecessary wars in Afghanistan. And now soldiers sit homeless on the streets with multiple mental health issues and addictions as a result. Pay has not kept pace with the cost of living in the slightest and soldiers are not allowed to form any kind of union to campaign for better pay.
If the last 10 years are anything to go by, Why would you want to join?
The solution to poor troop recruitment numbers... better pay and conditions and support for those remaining in and leaving the service.
In the UK trying to reinstate conscription or mandatory service would be a political dead end, Any government proposing the idea, would not only be unsuccessful, they would also experience massive campaigns against them from both sides of the political spectrum.
as they would be actively harming children's future goals and capabilities by denying them the ability to work in far more lucrative careers and education. delaying them from higher end jobs in an already difficult economic climate.
Please keep up the good work!

You’re absolutely right but they also know that war with Israel is war with a lot of people and that they would most certainly lose right now that’s why they even have proxies because they don’t have the balls for war no matter what there little “Jihadists” claim. Tehran doesn’t want to be the new Iraq or Afghanistan which makes sense but they are playing a dangerous game in that they helped orchestrate the October 7th attacks, if this happened to the US we would have already have started our air campaign against them and our expeditionary forces would be starting to get close.

The UK should provide government loans to allow recruits to buy homes, and secure a government pension (or large contribution to it) over a 5 years sign-up period. Therefore, recruits receive an upfront perk that lifts many to the housing ladder (which is impossible for young first-home buyers - espc around here!), as well as a long-term perk to support their potential sacrifice. I don't feel an immediate pay of 80k a year for an infantry job is the right balance. Perhaps a higher start to around 35k would be a sensible starting point.

Love your content but the vignette has to go.
Simon, would you sign up to be in your nation's military?
Conscription isn't that bad. I'm an Austrian. I had arguably the worst version of our conscription, but I learned things in the military that I'd never have learned anywhere else, because it would have sucked too much.
Conscription in Austria is only 6 months long. I was part of the Garde unit, who are an infantry unit that traditionally guards Vienna, but are the toy soldiers that are shown to foreign dignitaries.
I was a medic. Which means I mostly got to learn what a normal Garde had to know, without having to present to foreign presidents and such. I was on the sidelines, looking if our boys were gonna collapse from heatstroke.
More than half of my time in the army was educated. A truncated 4 weeks of basic training, which normally would be 7 weeks. Then 1 month of theoretical medic training in an army hospital. And then 1 month of practical medic training.
The rest of my 3 months of service was spent mostly in Vienna, stationed in a large barracks behind the palace of Schönbrunn.
It was a time filled with monotony, training exercises, a few emergencies, and knowing with absolute certainty, that if Austria would have to deploy to war, the cities would fall in weeks, if not days.
Our army is not capable of defending its cities. There are 2 areas where the Austrian army shines is our military industrial complex and our mountain infantry. Glock and Steyr are world class weapons manufacturers. But otherwise, we're doomed.
We'd probably need to spend another 2 billion euros a year to make Austria capable of defending itself in a porcupine defense style. But our Eastern flank is open, which happens to be a huge problem. We'd rapidly retreat into the mountains and then we'd make them bleed.
But if we're honest, Austria will probably never have to go that far. While Austria is nominally neutral, there are no illusions that if our Eastern neighbours were attacked, we'd join in their defense.
Because we aren't truly neutral. The EU has very strong provisions on what a member state needs to do when it's been invaded.
