"We'd say they were treated like animals, but that would be untrue. Animals actually had rights in Nazi Germany" what a chilling delivery. It hits like a truck.
I think Simon and the Warographics team deserve huge credit for being to tackle this topic head on in such an open way. Historical study should never be afraid of facing difficult subjects in the name of education. At the time of writing this comment, the video was still monetised, I hope it stays that way because I honestly believe we are on a path to repeat this very history and the more resources we have to remind ourselves of what we're trying to avoid, the better.
@BeenGoldenBro, just saying nazi or Hitler is grounds for demonization. To the point that smaller channels have to come up with creative ways of talking about nazis. My favorite being, Bad Muststach Man, and his 30's German army. Making an entire video is basically saying take all my money for this video.
@BeenGolden Yes, I absolutely mean that. As the other comment mentions; just mentioning that party or it's leader is likely to get a video automatically demonetised by the Algorithm, and everyone who has worked on this video does want to get paid... So do we juts ignore the past and the lessons it teaches or us, or pull our thumbs out of our asses and look at in depth, knowing it will not be comfortable or pleasant. Plus I firmly believe we're in a period of history where we could quite easily repeat the events of nearly 100 years ago; the world is becoming more polarised, tribal, isolationist and nationalistic, which are the exact circumstances that led us to WWII, so yes it is extremely important we educate ourselves on what came before so we don't do the same dumb sh*t all over again. And to do that, we have to be willing to look at how the Nazi's came to power, the words and phrasing they used to indoctrinate the population. If you look at what a look of leaders, politicians and activist/pressure groups are doing and saying, there are a shocking number of similarities.
Mate I haven't read the 2 replies to your comment but I totally agree with you, watching this made me realise how I could go down a similar route to how Germans thought in 1930s as a result of the world we're living in now. I benefited greatly from the reality check this video gives, its amazing to see how a societies insular thinking can lead to such atrocities, an amazing take away I never could have achieved from school, all thanks to this video!
Considering the state of things in the world at the moment, and that many of the lessons learned have been forgotten, this is possibly the most important video you and the team have made to date. Thank you for making it.

There are only 10,000 videos on RUclips alone about Germany during the N@zl era. people are lazy. All we need are a bunch of new experts on the subject since they watched a Simon video.. One can acquire historical knowledge that would surpass that of a damned history major if they utilized 1/1,000,000 of the information available here on YT. I can have very few conversations these days about historical matters, partly due to the youth U 30 not even knowing who G.Washington is. It's kind of sad that our kids aren't learning much. They are being Indoctrinated though, which will make them good little n@zl's when the dems get back in office. They didn't have enough time to implement in just 4 years the braindead one has had in office. It's coming though. And to all those who say BS, the only party & people who desire authoritarian control are on the left. Your rhetoric surrounding the orange person is a joke. The MSM, who knows that anyone that watches them gets all their opinions from them & are braindead, spreads the misinformation & watch the sheep eat it up. Thanks for your dedication Simon and the team. You knew a video on this topic was going to get demonitised straight away, but put up an amazing educational piece anyway. Bravo.
There was an easier way to sum up the intro question of if it's left/right: It's authoritarian, a quality than can be wielded regardless of alignment on the left/right spectrum and poses a danger all it's own. It's also possible for a party to claim it's one thing while being another, for example who takes seriously North Korea's claims that it's a democracy?
_"for example who takes seriously North Korea's claims that it's a democracy?"_ Well they certainly are more democratic than other socialist countries, like Cuba. At least in North Korea, people are allowed to vote and they hold elections in the first place. Neither are a thing in Cuba.
Can you do 3 additional videos in a series format? Communism (Soviet Union), an exploration of fascist beliefs in other countries, and an exploration of socialist beliefs in other countries? I'm sorry did you really just say you trust this channel to not be partial? Are you joking? This video itself has tons of issues. @DubhghlasMacDubhghlas if bifurcation is something you cannot grasp upon, thats your problem. As for me, there are things I can agree and disagree on someones worldview. Not everything labeled as "progressive" is correct and that also applies to the word "traditional." As for art, one can say it is a matter of "taste" and people can consider modern "art" as a degenerate and tasteless form of expression while not advocating for everything the nasties stood for.

Anyone who hasn't read Shirer's work on the Third Reich is missing out. Not only is the book itself (while massive) incredible, but the background on how it was written, and Shirer's experience (both directly and through access to primary source material) with the rise of Nazism is a fascinating tale in its own right.
No serious historians take Shirer's work for more than the mediocre journalism that it is. Once it was at least interesting, but given the extent of the current scholarly literature -- both broad & general and narrow & highly specific -- it's hardly even that any more.
According to a video about the Beerhall Putch by historian Mark Felton, the idea behind the name change from German Workers Party, DAP, to National Socialist German Workers Party, NSDAP, was to reach out to those in Germany who were on the "moderate left," but as another historian, John D. Ruddy, points out: "don't let the name fool you, just because it has "Socialist" in its name, it doesn't make "National Socialist" left wing."
There were elements within the Nazi party that were left wing. What many people mistakenly believe is that Hitler founded the Nazi party. He didn't, he took it over. Those same people also seem to forget about a very import historical event that happened on June 30, 1934 called the Night of Long Knives. That is when ALL of those left and moderate leaning political leaders in the NSDAP were KILLED and all that was left was far right.
Ruddy is enrirely wrong. The defining characteristic of left and right wing is how the ideology views the need for government (literally Control Mind in latin) control. Since the late 1800s the left has been emphatic for maximal government control . This is PERFECTLY in line with how Nazis viewed government. Thus they are left wing
Mark Felton has some issues with the truth. There been several reddit threads on things he gotten wrong. Ask Historians pretty much says his written stuff is good, his RUclips stuff is bad.
There were also those known at the time as the "roast beef" members of the party - former "reds" in "brown" clothing that had crossed from the communists to the NSDAP, attracted by the revolutionary aspects of the party against the traditional reactionaries, not put off by the clear hierarchical bent that sought to replace the old elites of the monarchy with new ones ("meritocraticically" to arise from those the party approved of).
Well... I never use this button, but for such a long video on an important topic that will absolutely get demonetized and possibly even age restricted since RUclips seems to hate controversial education topics. This video deserves some direct cash.

On sunday, May 5th, we celebrate our freedom. Next year it will be 80 years since our country was liberared from the Nazis. 15:50 "Third position" is what the Nazis said about themselves, but a lot of what Nazis (and the fashos more generally) say is advertising designed to co-opt the causes of the left for the goals of the right. Example: "Job insecurity and wage exploitation? Had you considered immigrants are to blame?" If you want to understand what they *really* believe, you need to give more weight to what they do than what they say. They expressed disdain for (non-Nazi) conservatives and monarchists, but who got sent up the chimney? The disabled, the mentally ill, the communists, the Jews, and the Gypsies. To get lined up against the wall as a German conservative, you had to be connected to the bomb plot. In short, it's obvious to anyone paying attention to what the Nazis did as much as what they said, the Nazis were of the right.
_"In short, it's obvious to anyone paying attention to what the Nazis did as much as what they said, the Nazis were of the right."_ Wrong. They had nothing to do with right wing of any kind whatsoever. It was a totalitarian far-left, socialist 3rd position ideology based on ethnonationalism.
_"The nazis also brawled in the streets with left wing groups."_ With Marxists mainly, but then again, so did the Bolshevik regime before and after the October Revolution.
_"Anyone who thinks nazism is left wing is severely ignorant."_ Wrong. It's a historical fact, that National Socialism was a totalitarian far-left, socialist 3rd position ideology based on ethnonationalism.
I would have thought that an explanation of Himmler’s quote on homosexuality was warranted. When he talks about finding bodies, he is referring to bog bodies from the Iron Age, found across Europe, who mostly died violent deaths. There is no evidence to suggest that these people were killed because they were gay, but then some of his beliefs seem to be incorrect. As a gay man of German and British descent, I thought I’d add that context. My ancestors were likely practicing human sacrifice, and I disapprove of this regardless of the sexuality of the victim.
I do agree that Nazism, as a distinct political movement, died in a bunker on April 30, 1945. Well, sort of, you had diehards that stuck around who were too cowardly to take their leaders route, but they aren't around now. What you do have is politically similar ideologies from folks who took a lot of inspiration from the Nazis. Of course, there are those folks that do the typical internet thing of calling someone a Nazi who doesn't agree with them. This, unfortunately, means that there are those who are actually acting like Nazis who try to use Godwin Rule to win the argument. They have also tried to extend Godwin's Rule to being labeled FASCIST and that is a political ideology that has NOT died out. For clarification, Nazism is a form of fascism, but not all fascists are Nazis.
Thank you, I had such a hard time trying to explain that to my brother who is insistent that Facism and Nazism are the exact same. I do not advocate for either, but nuance is important.
Usually fascist movements are defined by the interests and the identity of the certain nation it’s being used in for its gain and circumstance Ex: Classical fascism = Italian fascism National Socialism = German fascism Falangism = Spanish fascism Monarcho-fascism = British/Bulgarian/Hungarian fascism Legionism/Clerical fascism = Romanian/Austrian fascism
_"For clarification, Nazism is a form of fascism, but not all fascists are Nazis."_ Wrong. Nazism is National Socialism. Fascism was Fascism. They had nothing to do with each other, and were fundamentally two different ideologies. However both National Socialism and Fascism were forms of 3rd position movement.

Agreed, though many who insisted upon vehement disagreement with Nazi ideals during Hitler's rise to influence/power saw no problem whatsoever where the inherent nastiness of the ideology was concerned, so long as it didn't directly impact them/theirs. Tolerating evil aimed at others, so long as one views oneself as safe from the impact of said is every bit as bad as engaging in said evil directly. Life is varied and complicated in quite a few ways, but some things, how one views Nazism, for instance, are absolutely black and white.
As stated in the vid, they were taking ideas from all over (plus having plenty of internecine disagreements) so if you squint it's easy to cite ways other movements match them (as long as you ignore all the ways they don't). Just check Orwell's list of all that had been daubed Fascist in the 40's - it's been basically everyone from when it was current onwards.

To chose just one point, your explanation of “Aryan” isn’t really accurate. Aryans, as they were previously known academically, who would today be referred to as Indo Europeans, are the peoples of the world who speak Indo European languages, such as English, German, Swedish, and all Germanic languages; Latin and all derived Romance languages such as French; also Russian and the other Slavic languages, plus Greek, Hittite, the Celtic languages such as Irish Gaelic, Indian languages (hence the ‘Indo’ in Indo European) such as Sanskrit, Iranian languages (still known as Indo Aryan), etc., etc. The grouping known as Indo Europeans (or Aryans) also includes their descendants, who have clear genetic links with each other. I could go on and on, but suffice it to say that this video is much more editorial than objective, which doesn’t surprise me.
Dear RUclips, slapping a warning on the holocaust actually does more harm to the seriousness of the topic than allowing it to stand on its own. That’s right, your credibility after COVID-19 far worse than suspect.
Nazism: Weaponizes racism for genocide Communism: Weaponizes compassion for genocide. Is there one on Leninism and Stalinism too. My friend's dad growing up was a refugee from the Ukraine. He'd rarely talk about the trauma, but when he did, it gave me nightmares. I heard a lot of both Nazism and Communism. I actually think Communism is far worse by virtue of sheer widespread horrors, longevity, and insidious perversion of humanity's greatest trait, weaponizing compassion into a torture device.
There's arguably only been one nation subject to Nazism, yet many nations in the world have been or are subject to communism. Yet there are a myriad of people claiming communism isn't bad because it hasn't been tried yet.
Well one ideology almost died out and is banned in almost all countries on earth. While Communism still exists today in Russia, China. And both of the big ones still want to take over the world and control all power there is to get. Communism is worse even than Nazism so many more people have died in the name of Communism. And the extreme left is only growing bigger and bigger by the day. I wish they could read history and understand that Communism never works out.
A commonality that applies to everything is that single party rule is never good. A country governed by 1 party or 1 family for a prolonged time will always slip into autocracy and dictatorial rule. Nazi ideology I would wager is worse in that it's stated goals are always nationalistic and violent. Communism is deeply flawed in that when not in power it wants a nebulous concept of equality and power to the people. But in practice it always slips into single party dictatorships which runs at full speed towards atrocities. Both Nazism and communism lead towards atrocities, but communists don't intend for that to be the outcome, where nazi's do.

For all its impact I think a lot of people don’t realize how “brief” the nazi regime lasted. People should dissociate so-called "left-wing extremism" from liberalism and "so-called right-wing extremism from conservatism'. In fact, both "sides" of extremism are one and the same. They share the same absence of true elections, and true opposition parties, the use of ultra-violence, the absence of free-speech, the hatred of the press, we could go on all night... @@-MisterWhite...@-MisterWhite... maybe. My small brain always kind of figured that the Jewish Germans still had money, art, gold, jewellery, big houses etc. and they persecuted them just so they could rob it all and pass it off as racial intolerance that they whipped up among the dumb public who were poor and hungry. I'm often wrong though but often stuff boils down to simple greed. Plus all this blood and soil stuff sounds very much like rhetoric to get a massive following among the more simple country folk that significantly outnumber the city folk. Pretty much equivalent to what Taksin did with the red shirts in Thailand more recently. Although Germany had only just become a real country and I guess the monarchy just wound their neck in there rather than in Thailand where they diffused the whole red shirt yellow shirt thing with pink shirts. Black shirts and gold stars? Who knows, the past was the worst.
The NSDAP has a sort of path to how fast they can change Germany. They can't just snap their fingers and everyone suddenly believes a jew cabal is out there. It takes a few years of escalation for them. When the Kristallnacht comes around, it's been going on for years and it's a bit too late to turn around. A bunch of the NSDAP heads despise the german lutheran church but immediately starting to purge priests would have riled up the largely conservative germans.
After the fall of the USSR the 90's was a time with a lot of hope for a new world order where the huge wars were led behind, then came the balkans, koxovo, somalia, Kuwait, but we never suspected fascism would be back so soon. It's sad how we are descending the same path the world did in the 1930's
I think it's different though. Most of the fascist supporters today are in denial about their leaders being fascist. I don't think they would support an actual fascist regime. Plus Western countries have really strong democratic institutions. Look at Trump's attempted coup in America. That would have succeded in a middling democracy but in America it just fizzled out

The Nazi party being third position seems sensible. What is sad is that the scholars writing on this issue won't themselves be unbiased. My wife has a masters in history and nothing annoys her more that the often lack of objectivity in historical analysis. This video is not the place for it but I would want to examine the details of the people writing on this subject to be able to evaluate it.
Simply put, you have three ways of looking at this. Position 1: Nazism is an extreme right wing philosophy and ideology, and here's 79 years of intense, in depth, heart breaking, soul shattering research into the absolute worst humanity has to offer, to thoroughly and abruptly (as much as we can get anyway) explain our reasoning as to why. Position 2: Nazism is a 3rd Position ideology, most of this information coming from first hand accounts directly written, recorded, and transcribed by the people who said, and thought them. This could be taken seriously, or as the deranged ramblings of mad men, the choice is yours since we can't with 100% efficacy or accuracy, tell you exactly what another person meant when they don't speak with absolute direction and conviction. Position 3: Nazism is a left wing ideology because it has Socialism in the name, and now I'm going to blatantly ignore the significant number of communists, socialists, anarchists, and other political prisoners were mass murdered in death camps.
It’s “right wing” if you’re from Europe. In the US, it would be left wing because “socialism” is in the damn name😳I think the most accurate way to categorize nazism would be “right wing” socialists/statists. Cambodia and Mao’s China would be “left wing” socialists/statists…Lenin I’d consider more of a “center” and Stalin was more to the left imo…Kinda like Mussolini and Franco being to the right, but not as far as Germany…
Eh, don't quote Shirer too much. He was a journalist who wrote "Rise and Fall" less than two decades after the war ended. While he doesn't completely buy into the "Clean Wehrmacht" myth, he *did* fall for the Speer myth. It's not a wholly unreliable source, but Kershaw and Richard J. Evans are better. To his credit, Shirer expected some of his claims to be debunked later down the line and admitted it at the very start of his book, which puts him on a higher pedestal than people like Shelby Foote.
Knopf described the Ostfront as military anarchy. Heer units were regularly diverted to anti-partisan operations. There was local auxiliary units doing what they liked under heer protection. Something as small as who your nearest officer was could determine what the unit did. If you say no they seem to prefer moving you aside, but there is no consequence if you or a mate in the platoon murders a random pole. The SS special units are pretty small, they constantly relied on backing and logistics and requisitions from the heer. The officer corps seems mosly concerned about keeping the heer independent. They want to run the heer as a state within the state, and doesn't mind the lack of democracy or anything the NSDAP does in the civilian sphere or with the occupied territories and populations. They only start to grumble when the NSDAP starts to challenge them for control of the army. The ideological amateurs in the NSDAP despise the more aristocratic elements of the officer corps.
Well done George. As a fuller intro to Nazism this was excellent. I grew up learning about Nazism (no I'm not German but am European) most of this I knew but not as detailed. Well done Simon you and your team carried this with exactly the right tone and thankyou for doing this series on Nazism. At some point it would be good to do an explanation and comparison on fascism in regards to Nazism.
So unbiased you managed to avoid giving one side of the argument with what was essentially "we don't want to" while spinning nationalism, an inherently collectivist ideology, into "limited" individualism. This was incredibly disappointing and despicable. "We're not going to say who's right and who's wrong but you can hear these opinions from one side and the other we won't share because it's wrong". Couldn't even attempt to feign objectivity for more than a few lines.
You can be mad, but they are right. There is no need to defend Nazism. Directly quoting their writings damns them regardless. Meaning no amount of delivery spinning besides openly supporting them will be anything but biased against them. This is the nature of being objectively incorrect, based upon untruths, lies, and delusion. The truth stands on its own merits upon execution without support and Nazism is, inherently, the opposite of this. Thus, it does not matter if they even attempted to be unbiased, any honesty will be biased against Nazism. May as well be honest about their opinion then.

Anyone who hasn't read Shirer's work on the Third Reich is missing out. Not only is the book itself (while massive) incredible, but the background on how it was written, and Shirer's experience (both directly and through access to primary source material) with the rise of Nazism is a fascinating tale in its own right.
While a good read, there's some serious source bias in the work where he relies too much on unverified personal accounts from those motivated to lie
It doesn't stop the MAGAs from claiming that Nazis are leftist, though.

15:50 "Third position" is what the Nazis said about themselves, but a lot of what Nazis (and the fashos more generally) say is advertising designed to co-opt the causes of the left for the goals of the right. Example: "Job insecurity and wage exploitation? Had you considered immigrants are to blame?"
If you want to understand what they *really* believe, you need to give more weight to what they do than what they say.

Usually fascist movements are defined by the interests and the identity of the certain nation it’s being used in for its gain and circumstance
Ex:
Classical fascism = Italian fascism
National Socialism = German fascism
Falangism = Spanish fascism
Monarcho-fascism = British/Bulgarian/Hungarian fascism
Legionism/Clerical fascism = Romanian/Austrian fascism
Nazism is being reborn in america. Its just being rebranded as republicanism
_"For clarification, Nazism is a form of fascism, but not all fascists are Nazis."_
Wrong. Nazism is National Socialism. Fascism was Fascism. They had nothing to do with each other, and were fundamentally two different ideologies. However both National Socialism and Fascism were forms of 3rd position movement.

Calling someone a Nazi so easily these days just for disagreeing with you, massively undermines the memory of those who suffered under that evil regime.
It's almost like calling someone a Nazi just because you disagree with them kinda makes you a Nazi

They share the same absence of true elections, and true opposition parties, the use of ultra-violence, the absence of free-speech, the hatred of the press, we could go on all night... One could say the methods are similar but the ideologies are different but I would disagree with even that. The "ideologies" behind extremism are but empty word used to justify barbarism in order to reach its true purpose: obtaining and maintaining power. End of story.
This.
In the other WW II corner, among the allied nations, they start to form large wartime coalition governments. Democratic conservatives, social democrats and liberals in the allied nations sit in the same large emergency government and start to define themselves as the democratic block. The UK and others hold wartime elections.
Thanks for continue to cover things you know will be demonetized
Wow, this covered material I've never ever heard.
Nice that it did get monitsed too.
Simon now making how to videos now?
I'd suggest he was a bipolar psychopath who said whatever he felt people could get behind at the time to let him get away with whatever he wanted to do. People are stupid and easily swayed. Just ask Simon Cowell
I think this is largely true - with the caveat that what he actually cared about was the racial politics. Everything else was just a attempt to get people on board with the racial nonsense.
Great video so far. I'd love for one communism too.
That would have succeded in a middling democracy but in America it just fizzled out
Russia got anarcho-capitalism. I think the failiure of the time was to keep telling russians that this lawless corruption and banditry is what democracy is supposed to be like. But it was a bit more free, at least the different oligarchs were balancing eachother.
Thanks
Even as a child at school when I first heard of Nazism I couldn't anything less than a chill through my body as well when I saw their symbols for the first time
😂 why you gotta lie

Good slave, they trained you right
Honey, wake up! New Warographics side premise just dropped.
Excellent video! And a video that most definitely needed to be made, especially before the American election! Everyone should watch this.
Major props to Simon and his team for uploading this video, especially since they had to know that it would be demonetized because of RUclips's daft rules and algorithm!
Please get stop using AI art , there are artist that need work. Thank you.
@@TomuCow because the AIs generating those images "out of thin air" used real artists work to be trained in the first place and the people operating those AIs didn't really compensate the real artists for their work

The book recommendations are a feature I'd love to see in other videos. Super conducive to further research.
Don't worry, the "I'm not a Nazi but..." crowd will be here to tell you how they totally support freedom.
The obsession with Nazis and Hitler is alarming
Simon, I love your and your team's work. You are an invaluable set of channels. Thank you.
Lots of hit dogs hollering in the comments
Yes indeed
Playing the victim card meanwhile they're oppressing the Palestinians 🥲
It’s “right wing” if you’re from Europe. In the US, it would be left wing because “socialism” is in the damn name😳I think the most accurate way to categorize nazism would be “right wing” socialists/statists. Cambodia and Mao’s China would be “left wing” socialists/statists…Lenin I’d consider more of a “center” and Stalin was more to the left imo…Kinda like Mussolini and Franco being to the right, but not as far as Germany…
Wow that's crazy, we consider North Korea a democracy since they have it in their name too then?
Wow that was an excellent episode well written worded presented an informative gr8 job
AH’s views on women are very similar to the ones in the bible 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️

@@BasicallyTabletop What the hell are you talking about? Who is defending Nazism? I'm saying they're being biased against those further from Nazism than themselves by twisting definitions and not providing counter perspectives that would lead people away from National Socialism.
@@BasicallyTabletop The incredible irony here is they did give the Nazi perspective as well as the general left wing perspective but the right wing perspective? Allah forbid they provide that. Can't have a shred of ideology contrary to the first two now can we.
@@darkbringer1440 What? The video's about Nazis. Not 'arguments against Nazis.' And who exactly are they biased against that's further from Nazis? Communists? Who cares? They're even worse, lol.
@@MrPercolator9000 Why bother? Apparently what you national socialists agree with are considered "scholarly sources" and anyone speaking the truth are "partisan political actors".
