For the feet (and ears and teeth) you have to use positive reward training when they are puppies so that you can touch, massage, pull, investigate. If they get a thorn in their foot, a bone stuck in their teeth, etc. you need to be able to handle those areas. This is more difficult to train when they are older, but can be done. Nice tips. :)
The only one I feel is a bad habit is picking them up. There's nothing wrong with giving them treats. To maintain a healthy weight they should eat the recommended amount according to breed/size and considering physical activity (i.e if they're a working dog vs pet). Regular exercise on hard surfaces helps keep nails at the right length. As for the feet thing, it's recommended that you get your puppy used to being touched all over to desensitise them which helps when they have to go to the vet and so they're less nervous. Hope this info helps
tjavendano… I trim my dog’s nails (my cat, too) on a regular basis. Even though she was an adult when I got her (dog) I got her used to it right from the beginning by doing what you mentioned, starting to play with her paws without scaring her.
The thing with the treats and why I cut them, was that I figured, well, he has to have some calories cut anyway. So why not cut the treats? Why cut valuable nutrition in-exchange for food with a lot less nutrition? I'm probably quite lucky: Starbuck loves to eat, haha, he is excited to get his kibble, so I figured that if I just cut his treats, he'd forget about them after a few weeks, especially if I distracted him with something even better and more valuable (play). And honestly, he did! 🐕
I have 2 dogs. One of them hates being picked up, he will give a little growl if we go to pick him up. Yet, there are times when he wants to be picked up, for example if I am sitting at the dinner table, he wants to be on my lap so he can see food and when I take him to be groomed, he leaps up into my arms as we app roach the grooming parlour, probably because he doesn't want to be there. Your videos are very informative. Thank you
As far as cutting your dogs nails, sometimes they MUST be cut. Usually, when they become too long for the dog to walk normally, and the dog is old, and isn't wearing them down naturally. And, a biggie, when it is the dogs dewclaws. I had actually had one of my dogs dewclaws surgically removed so that I didn't have to cut them anymore, which was a big stress to him. As far as a harness goes for our 2 dogs, it's MUCH better than a collar with the leash on it. A harness helps the dog get held back with the stress onto the body, chest and belly vs it all being on the neck, as a traditional collar would do. But, that "perfect fit" harness seems to be great too. Our dogs are not "head shy", a term usually used for horses. But, they don't stress if a harness is slipped over their heads. Usually, our dogs are just excited to get that harness on, because it means "It's time for a walk!!!" OR, a RIDE and a walk!!! NO TREATS? OMG, our dogs would NOT like that at all. Every night, it's a dog cookie, and then a rawhide chew. OR ELSE..... and the OR ELSE is a part Husky dog barking barking LOUDLY until he gets his treats, and his GF part Pitty gal giving a look of "okay where is it at?" I'm really CONFUSED too, you think that dogs HATE getting treats? I must have misunderstood some parts of this video. Sure, some dogs are overweight, but, surely a chew stick isn't gonna make a dog fat. Our part PITTY female dog is a chubby gal, and we had switched to just dry food vs dry with meat mixed in. We did that for about 2 months, and she even had not eaten much that dry food. She had just been eating her dog cookie and rawhide for that whole time. Plus, a small bit of canned cat food that my mom had mixed in some natural holistic arthritis medicine into. Our Pitty mix gal pooch has bad hips. She needs an expensive surgery that she can't get because 1 she's too fat and 2 it's expensive. But, after 2 months of her barely eating, she didn't lose any weight, or not very much. I would still be giving her the dry, but, my mom has chosen to make some people meat to mix with their food. She was barely eating for at least 2 months, but, she remained chubby. Poor gal. As far as picking a dog up, ours are both too big to pick up, but, our Husky mix loves to get on my lap. Why would you WANT your dog to come up onto your table that you eat on? I was just SO sure that you would say that dogs hate for us humans to hug and kiss them. That is usually mentioned by many people when it comes to videos about things that dogs are supposed to HATE that people do to them. And, I must say that when it comes to "hugs and kissies", I do THINK that it all depends on the dog. Our Husky mix is all good with both hugs AND kissies, but, our Pitty mix gal, she loves hugs and shoulder massages, but, kissies are just tolerated. And, once in a blue moon, kissies seem to be appreciated. It depends on her mood.
It is true, sometimes you've just got to cut them, especially if you don't walk on concrete a lot! And I totally agree on the dog collar thing. When I see people walk their dogs on the collars, I'm just so confused! At least 50% of dogs I see are walked on their collars. The harness is so much nicer, and safer, for them. In terms of treats, for Starbuck, I just cut his treats because it was easier. I could have calculated it into his diet when losing weight and added in treat calories and cut some of his kibble instead: but I figured, well, for him, there isn't much point to them. I am probably pretty lucky, he is very food motivated. He will work for his normal kibble. He is excited to eat ANYTHING. So I thought, if I just cut his treats which are dead calories with very little nutrition, then I wouldn't have to cut his nutrition-filled kibble. If he never gets treats, then after a few weeks, he'll probably just forget about them. And he did! He just adapted to his new normal of no treats. But it was a transition and he wasn't happy about it at first! Playing did distract him though and honestly, he prefers the 1-on-1 time a lot more than the treats anyway. Haha, I trained him to go up onto the table for a video actually! I trained him to go up the ramp, onto the table and to lie on his bed I put on the table to film this video. It was also just good practice for him to get used to being more brave for dog agility which we're now working on too. And it's true: Starbuck HATES hugs and kisses. But every dog is different and it really comes down to your pup!
I loved this video, it all makes so much sense. I will stop with 3 of them as I don't pick up my dogs they are too big and clumsy, and I too have a collapsible ramp, and works very well to get them in and out of the car. The other three suggestions are brilliant. thank you for sharing!♥
Interesting video! I've had mixed reactions from dogs getting picked up, most of our mini dachshunds like it as long as I do it a specific way. They really like being as tall or taller than people around them, I think, moreso than they're scared to be contained. We have ramps setup in the surfaces they most like, though, so picking them up is part of cuddle time which probably makes it feel more like they're getting a reward. But I taught the command "lift" for the dog we had that absolutely hated being picked up, so they'd let me pick them up for vet appointments and stuff.
Thank you! And unfortunately I don't know what the brand is of it. Katya got it a long time ago, second hand. But the main thing to look for in a new one, would be a ramp a grippy surface 🐕
This video makes me feel very lucky. Our dog doesn’t react in the slightest when you touch his paws. He also free eats (bowl is always full, he eats when he’s hungry) and gets a fair amount of treats, and he maintains his weight to the pound. He is 72lbs (ideal) every single vet visit.
I would do anything for cheese too lol! Im glad you were able to help your dog live a healthier and happier life! I would love to try the scratch board for my dogs nails!!
Haha I know right! And absolutely it can be a fun game for your dog so I definitely recommend giving it a go! There are lots of tutorials on RUclips that show how to get do it. Our scratch board is literally just a piece of wood with some sand paper on it 🐕
I don’t like getting Pap tests..is there an alternative for that? I think a dog can get used to having their nails done. The board trick would take a long time..and wouldn’t get the dew claw. Treats are fine once in a while.
great advice! Tho I do wonder if some dogs do enjoy being picked up? I do see quite often how dog trainers say that dogs hate being picked up but my yorkie will DEMAND to be picked up and carried around
Thank you! And absolutely, that is why I said most - every dog is different like us. Most people don't like cleaning, but some people enjoy it and find it relaxing, haha! 🐕
Two of our dogs love havingbtheir paws massaged with oil on their pads. And our youngest jumps into our arms if ee have been out without them ....and loves to be picked up and cuddled.
My dogs love treats - so I make sure they are healthy, and I reduce food accordingly. As far as carrying them, I think it's important for you to really get to know your dog. I have two - my oldest, indeed, does not like to be picked up. He'll allow it, but is tense and clearly not happy about it. My youngest, however (same breed, genetically related), practically leaps into my arms if he is scared. He will literally hold on to me so tightly around my neck and waist that I can let go. And the fact that he weighs nearly 50 lbs. makes that a challenge, so I *will* pick him up if he asks, but only for a brief time. When I put him down, and kneel down to his level to to make sure he's OK, and then we return to normal. Fireworks caused this, and a new loud, crowded dogpark caused it. Weird guy, but man I love them both!
Haha yes, it is so fun meeting a new dog and getting to know their different personalities. Yours both sound lovely and very cute. Although I'll be honest, I don't think I could hold a 50lb dog for more than a minute, haha!
I would only recommend carrying a dog if they're seriously injured or sick that they have trouble moving. Dogs naturally wear down their nails if they're walked on cement a lot. The ramp is a good idea.
Thank you! And yes, for many dogs, they probably don't need their nails trimmed. His nails definitely can get long though, because we live in an area surrounded by a lot of parks/nature and he spends probably at least 90% of his walks on grass, since we wander off the paths. I have a video that shows the sorts of parks we have: ruclips.net/video/kGqbB9xsceg/видео.html
If they are blind as well and can't do stairs. I had to carry my dog Momo a lot in the last few years of her life. My dog Eko hated being carried but in his last few months he was okay with it (was necessary, heart failure).
Absolutely. If you have to carry them, that's what you've got to do! My apartment has a lot of stairs and from the ages of 2-8 months, he had to be carried up & down the stairs by me. And Eko probably only had to be carried a few times a day. I had to carry Starbuck sometimes 1-2 times per hour in the middle of potty training! To be honest, I think that is why he hates being picked up now. I think dogs can be very, very tolerant if it is a somethings-thing, but because for him it was a many-times-a-day thing, he grew less tolerant of it, haha.
Dachshunds instinctively pull their from feet away from you. Over time my girl has figured out daddy's gonna trim those nails and goes limp. What are you doing about dew claws and back paws?
It is a good question. You can train them to trim their back paws too. Starbuck's back paws aren't really a problem, but it's one of the things on the to-train list in case they ever do become problematic!
Easy peasy to these four steps w/your puppy/dog...1st one don't trim/file your dog's nail... go for an extra long walk the pavement will file their nails down...2nd one the harness I like...3rd one don't give treats at all instead pieces of chicken/liver...4th one my opinion pick up your puppy/dog always & when you can (varies on physical limitation) bcuz your puppy/dog is just as important as your child (u now what I mean) & they grow up too fast.💖💖💖
They do grow up so fast! Starbuck's nickname is "child" because he really is my child. He even responds to being called "child" as though it was his name 😉
Good question. Only first front paws are problematic, but you can also train them to scratch their back paws too - that is on the to-teach list for Starbuck, haha 🐕
My dog would lose his mind if i stopped picking him up. My dog is so attached he needs to be carried to bed at bed time and held like a baby when watching tv.
Haha good question, I trained him to climb up onto it and then go lie in his bed for this video: ruclips.net/video/3vbpTqmJFkw/видео.html he doesn't try to jump up by himself without the ramp, thankfully! Starbucks only problematic nails are his front ones, so we have only trained that. You can also train them to file their back paws, but it takes longer. There are tutorials up on RUclips I highly recommend doing a search!
Haha, it's a good question. I trained him to climb up onto the table and then lie in his bed to film this video, actually: ruclips.net/video/3vbpTqmJFkw/видео.html
Some dogs also just don't have an opportunity to have their nails wear down if they don't walk on hard surfaces. Starbuck spends 95% of his walks on grass, which is why it's a big help for his nails. If he spent more time on concrete, I'm sure they'd wear down more!
hey my dog loves to be picked up. he’ll jump on me until i do and pet him and when i put him down he’ll stop. if i let him without picking him up he’ll continue to jump on me so ig it’s the chihuahua in him
Haha honestly, as someone whose dog also has sensitive nails, this honestly was a game-changer. There are tutorials on how to train it on RUclips, I highly recommend them!

Easy peasy to your puppy/dog nails... don't clip/file them just go for an extra long walk the concrete/pavement will file them down that's what my veterinarian recommended.
Honestly, Arya is so lucky to have someone in her life that cares enough about her to put her on a diet. She will be so grateful when she can run around and play!
