    Me in train sim world:

  • @Martindyna
    @Martindyna 11 месяцев назад

    I guess that a reason why these might be let go is fuel consumption. I wonder if it would be feasible to remove the engine of one of the power cars to make a DVT and re-gear the remaining power car for 160 km/h (as the XPT) to give more torque for acceleration.
    I don’t know who would do the work now we’ve sold off most of our rail engineering companies ….. perhaps Brush.

    • @TheAntisocialTrain
      @TheAntisocialTrain  11 месяцев назад +1

      Yes high fuel consumption, especially during braking or idling is one of the reasons why they are going. However, the idea of converting one power car into a dvt (a trial which occurred in the late 80s/early 90s already with the 91s) would probably not be cost effective today as there are already "suitable" (and I cannot stress those speech marks enough) replacements for the HSTs, in the form of a metal green sausage with glorified ironing boards for seats. Thank you for taking the time to comment tho, enjoy your day:)

      @@TheAntisocialTrain I accept that it probably won’t happen but surely to scrap the many Inter7City and Castle sets so soon after their introduction and buy new trains must be much more expensive than what I proposed (unless there are suitable modern units in storage).
      I was thinking today about what capable trains Voyager DEMUs are, apart from the fact that they smell strongly of toilets. Amazing that the manufacturer was not forced to sort it, can’t be rocket science!

    • @TheAntisocialTrain
      @TheAntisocialTrain  11 месяцев назад +1

      @@Martindyna of course, and I had the same pondering myself. Simply put the Castles and Inter7Citys were meant to be lasting far longer than they have (well, the castles at least). Circumstances changed however and certain higher ups want them gone. However they aren't all being scrapped. Some ex-GWR powercars have been exported to Mexico (and look pretty dang great) to improve services over there. Granted, not all of us here will make a trip to Mexico specifically to see the HSTs again. In addition, it all comes down to a cost-benefit analysis. I can't provide figures to back up this point. In fact this is mostly skeptical and should be taken with a grain of salt, but I assume there is an official somewhere who has figured out that buying new units would be cheaper in the long run (and you know the DFT - any chance to save money they'll take) than keeping the HSTs in service. I completely agree with your point on the voyagers, they have potential. I especially agree with your comment about the smell. They don't stop here in Bridgwater, but zoom through at 90-100mph and even still the smell lingers. But crosscountry will be refurbishing these units soon as part of their contract renewal so hopefully that problem gets solved.
