I really like the idea a convertible laptop with a good GPU. The Nitro Spin 5 is way more affordable than a Surface Pro and pushes some very respectable performance. I hope more of these devices come out this year. Thanks for watching!
Dude your hair is good. This is a great review and product. I would like another surface book alternative. I'd be using a lot of clip studio, detailed stylus stuff though.
Great work Lee, Your videos are always super clean and to the point. I always look forward to watching your videos and I am never dissapointed with your content, you always deliver.
Hey Dave! I suggested this labtop a view vids ago and I wonder if it was me who gave you the idea for this video. Please reply! (I would feel cool) ;) btw this is the best tech channel I know.
They should have went with a copper color for the hinges and edges and a regular white backlight for the keyboard. Would have been a great cheap XPS competitor
Well, if it is a more muted red, like burgundy or something, it can be quite appealing if used moderately. This one is quite good for me. But what turns me off is that acid amagamer-red keyboard lightning. Really a deal breaker for me. This model is also too red on the inside for my taste.
Michael Gregory what model are you talking about ? And does it support decent gaming? I already have a gaming pc just something decent when I get board
As someone said, all gaming laptops should be convertible so we could use keyboard and mouse without being far away from the screen, but I have to add, it looks that it would be convenient for thermals if you put it in a tent shape
I bought this laptop like 5 months ago for productivity, web developpement and occasionnal gaming and for me it's a very good choice if you looking for a laptot under 1000euros. Sure there is a lot of thermal issues when you push it too much (you can put it on a stand to let more air enter inside), but i can play (on sector) fornite on medium with 60fps and with some chrome tabs opened behind. I don't regret at all this purchase. Thanks for your work Dave, I watch your videos since so many years and its better and better ! (actually it's very cool so aha)
Thank you for the recommendation. I was thinking about this laptop instead of hp spectre 360x which costs more. Can it handle big programs like unity and photoshop?
Sir Salmon ....You do know it's a full game though, right?? The F2P part is just 1 game mode.. and it has smashed streaming records on Twitch... I don't understand how you can watch it skyrocket past every other F2P game, 7 months into the F2P addition, and say it will fade away lol
I travel 3 weeks a month for my job, so I am pretty much always gaming on a laptop. I have an external mouse and keyboard. Using both the screen ends up being quite far from my face. I kind of like the idea of a convertible gaming laptop, that my use case is super limited.
I think it's pretty good for students that take notes on a tablet instead of bringing paper books in their bags- light gaming is nice too, overall a good option
Obligatory black/red color.... Anyway, it looks pretty neat. It would be nearly perfect if it had gtx 1060 (or at least a 1050ti) versions, although those would probably have heating issues.
Id think the RAM is a bigger concern. Ive had trouble with 8gb of RAM in some games. Plus you cant even open a browser tab at the same time you are gaming. Agree about the extremely overused and generic trim.
Ignafiltro Sanchez why it would not? The Triton 700 is thinner than this and have a gtx 1080 mxq. It just need a redesigned heat pipe and add one more stick of ram then there you go a powerful laptop
True, but its louder and in my opinion it is not refined at all. Surface temperatures are extremely high while gaming and that crap. IMO having anything better than a 1070 max-Q on a laptop is useless (specially without a high refresh rate monitor). After some thought, yes a 1060 Max-Q could work, however it would require a mayor redesign, since the cooling system is centered and there is no much space for heatpipes.
Did Acer just combine two of the things i want a laptop for??? Gaming and a 2in1?? There's only one way they can make me want this even more. Make an 11.6 inch version.
G.G. ok yeah but if all you do is play games and use the internet and Microsoft office it wouldn't be too bad My main PC is a 11.6 inch laptop and I love the size
This feels like magic that you released a review of this laptop just yesterday. I've been looking for a laptop like this since a long time ago. A hybrid :D thanks
I really love this concept of a "do it all" laptop. I feel like more people would buy something like that if it: - Removed the 2.5" bay in favor of a larger battery - Made the RAM upgrade-able or at least inexpensive to get 16GB - Replaced the red with a more neutral color like black or silver - Added a TB3 w/powershare instead of the barrel plug - Made the keyboard RGB (Hear me out, if you need discretion, turn the back-light off or set it to white) - And made the keyboard more user friendly (small Fn, full arrow keys with small right shift and 0) What do y'all think? i love you so much for making this review, otherwise i would never get the chance to know about this laptop and now that i know it, belive me i probably gonna buy it, keep it up!!
I bought the lenovo yoga 720 15 last year for college and I enjoy it. It is similar to the laptop in this video pretty much - thin laptop with mid graphics card 1050. I like how versatile the 720 is - enough horse power for intense programs and games, has a great screen if you want to do any graphics, and while still being great at normal stuff like hw. Personally I like how the 720 (and 730) looks sleek and not like a typical gamer laptop. I would definitely recommend buying it if you are considering it. I remember I was between buying the 720 and the dell xps - but went with the 720 because it was a better bang for buck - I got it on sale for $850 with a student discount.
+Navi Retlav I've been using the Yoga 720 since December and love it so far. I put my experience with it into words for someone else in a comment. Here's the link: ruclips.net/video/uofpv18IW64/видео.html&lc=Ugx6pLrVS2_Sm5xuMMF4AaABAg.8bssJix5tM88cB7Sws96UA Since the 730 is not very different from the 720, this will help you a lot with the decision. This is what I've been looking for! I don't even mind the awkwardness of tablet mode. A convertible with a quad core CPU and GTX 1050? This is like my dream laptop!
You covered the one side of inputs but not the other. I was trying to see if it had thunderbolt on the USB-C but was blurred. Props on the "Red" camera, I guess you like "that" Red LOL
God damn, thanks for sharing this, this laptop's versatility is so perfect for me to carry around as a student but also to decently and casually play games on, and also doesn't cost me a leg to buy.
I was going to wait for this nitro but ended up with the lenovo yoga 720 instead. Same setup with the 1050 but smaller chassis, thinner bezels and longer battery life. I’m super satisfied so far!
Hey Dave, usually I have nothing to complain about in your videos, but you completely glossed over the port selection in this one. 2:38 "The port selection is pretty good. We get a bunch of USBs and a full-size SD slot." How many are type A? How many are type C? Is the type C Thunderbolt 3? Is there an audio jack? Is it a single 4-pin combo plug or separate 3-pin plugs for headphone and mic? Normally your videos answer all of these questions, but this one left all of them to the imagination.
At 4:17, the reason being for the thermals better in that mode is possibly due to the exposed surface area of the intake vents as opposed when it was at the bottom when using it like a normal laptop. Try using the laptop where the vents at the bottom are raised and it will increase the amount of heat that the intake vents can take in. This is just my suggestion though
I like the laptop design. I honestly could see myself using it alot. My issue is that it's actually a bit to big for this kind of laptop. I currently rock a laptop with a 1060 inside so it should last me for a while. I also have a old Mac which I like to use for light tasks because it's easier to carry around than most windows laptops
First time commenting on your channel. You do very good work. Your content is very solid and it has a very high quality. Keep up the good work. Also, do you have any plans to do a review of the Microcenter's Powerspec 1710 gaming laptop?
Surface book 2 (13 or 15 inch) compared to Acer Nitro Spin 5 Pros -Better graphics(only on 15 inch) -Longer battery life(depends on usage) -Better screen -Lighter build(personal preference) -Detachable tablet(personal preference) -More premium build(Better material, better quality) -Better build-in OS(I have experienced many OS issues with Acer laptops) -Iris scanner(personal preference) -Supports XBox Wireless controllers(optional accessory) Cons -Pay twice the amount -Worse cooling(according to some reports) -Feels less like a gaming laptop(personal taste) -No fingerprint sensor(personal preference) -Less ports(adapters rule these days) Conclusion:Pick Surface book 2 if budget is high, pick Acer Nitro Spin 5 for more affordable hybrid experience.
That's some innovation, i have Acer Aspire Switch 10, convertible laptop is nice thing. This device allows to take the screen off keyboard, it's kinda neat but still. This Spin 5 is just cool

4:27 Every gaming laptop should be convertible it makes sense for hooking up a nice keyboard that way .
would be difficult on laptops with protruding fans e.g. alienware 17R4

- Replaced the red with a more neutral color like black or silver
- Added a TB3 w/powershare instead of the barrel plug

Ok, One Question.
Why do you say KabyLake-R, rather than just saying Coffee Lake????
laptop refresh is called Kaby Lake R rather than Coffee Lake, as that is only for desktop 8th gen parts
baecause it is kabylake r
Because its not Coffee Lake
They should have put this in a 13 inch chassis
It would have been more difficult but 13 inches would be amazing for a convertible
I love how he calls everything “pretty cheap” even though its $1000+ like boi

You are 100% my favourite tech RUclipsr
I was going to wait for this nitro but ended up with the lenovo yoga 720 instead. Same setup with the 1050 but smaller chassis, thinner bezels and longer battery life. I’m super satisfied so far!
Yes finally made a review of this after I purchased it
Just purchased this Laptop last week. Screen display is great(using gtx 1050). I use mostly on Autocad and Revit programs. Overall Happy with it :)
1 inch thick and almost 6 lbs killed it. If it was 0.6" and 4 lbs I would be ordering right now
where did you get 6lbs? its around 4.8
Thanks for the computer idea! I have a similar devise and did the computer thing.
Low-key showing off the RED camera ;) must be a great toy to play with on a daily basis!
Thank you for always putting overwatch FPS in your benchmarks! It's basiclly the only game I play.
nice work man! love your work. Here's to hoping gigabyte comes out with a new Aero 15 soon with 4K display *Crossing fingers*
Dave: "This isn't a Hardcore gaming laptop" Title: "A Convertible GAMING Laptop! "
MattMan Plays1 r u stupid?
I love the setup at 4:23
Great video as usual Dave!
Hey Dave, usually I have nothing to complain about in your videos, but you completely glossed over the port selection in this one. 2:38 "The port selection is pretty good. We get a bunch of USBs and a full-size SD slot."
How many are type A? How many are type C? Is the type C Thunderbolt 3? Is there an audio jack? Is it a single 4-pin combo plug or separate 3-pin plugs for headphone and mic? Normally your videos answer all of these questions, but this one left all of them to the imagination.
Every gaming laptop should have a feature to detach the keyboard and use it wirelessly using Bluetooth cause that will be really comfortable...
Love this laptop I bought it
Thanks Dave
At 4:17, the reason being for the thermals better in that mode is possibly due to the exposed surface area of the intake vents as opposed when it was at the bottom when using it like a normal laptop. Try using the laptop where the vents at the bottom are raised and it will increase the amount of heat that the intake vents can take in. This is just my suggestion though
Something like this but with a Ryzen APU and a stylus included and I'm sold.
I almost squealed when I saw the You Suck At Cooking video play.
I wish we can get a more in-depth dive on this laptop, and a lot more attention.
Thank god something that suits my needs. Touchscreen for art and pen (I don't mind the size) gaming and fkn portability
Surface book 2 (13 or 15 inch) compared to Acer Nitro Spin 5
Pros
-Better graphics(only on 15 inch)
-Longer battery life(depends on usage)
-Better screen
-Lighter build(personal preference)
-Detachable tablet(personal preference)
-More premium build(Better material, better quality)
-Better build-in OS(I have experienced many OS issues with Acer laptops)
-Iris scanner(personal preference)
-Supports XBox Wireless controllers(optional accessory)
Cons
-Pay twice the amount
-Worse cooling(according to some reports)
-Feels less like a gaming laptop(personal taste)
-No fingerprint sensor(personal preference)
-Less ports(adapters rule these days)
Conclusion:Pick Surface book 2 if budget is high, pick Acer Nitro Spin 5 for more affordable hybrid experience.
just the laptop i was looking for
That's some innovation, i have Acer Aspire Switch 10, convertible laptop is nice thing. This device allows to take the screen off keyboard, it's kinda neat but still. This Spin 5 is just cool
if I had loads of money, I'd buy this just to have this cool looking gaming laptop.
Love that with gaming accessories!
This intro is dope!
