  • Ben Johnson is the ultimate running machine. His explosive start is more like a horizontal leap; each stride uses enough energy to light up a city block, and his top speed is 43 kilometres per hour. Training four hours a day for 11 years doesn't hurt, either. In 1987, In this clip, scientists, coaches and computers try to comprehend the physics of a man who can outrun every person on the planet.

    Are there any other sprinters today using the same start technique as he used? It’s a fascinating concept, feet closer together with an explosive double leg push to start. Increased power off the blocks has got to give a competitive advantage. I can’t believe nobody picked up on that & ran with it. Pun intended.

      Steven Scummy Height has very little to do with speed. This isn't why Usain Bolt ran fast. There are many world class sprinters that are Usain's height and none of them are even remotely as fast as Christian Coleman 5'8" or Yohan Blake 5'11". Speed has to do with proper training, stride frequency, stride power, form & body mastery. Again it has very little to do with height!

      lol!!Bolt has clocked at 44km/h and Ben is 43km/h remember he was running 9.79 in the 80's.An increase in technology will lead to better drugs and harder detection.Gay and Asafa were caught so it's safe to say that no athlete in the Olympics is clean they all have to dope at some point.Also technology leads to improved ntrition,training and track equipment like spikes and running surface.Lol!!Ben Johnson will smoke bolt in the 100meters but not 200meters.Remember the only athletes close to Bolt are Gatlin and Yohan Blake yet they can not match Ben Johnsons start so you are looking at a huge gap in the first meters of the race of which bolt will not close up ben can easily make up 1km/h in today's Era.Ben squats 3 times his body weight for reps

      yeah its all lower body strength uperbody isnt needed

    • @KX5Kat
      @KX5Kat 6 лет назад +3

      You do need strength, a hell of a lot of it and yes, even in your upper body (particularly the shoulders, as the force of their swing counterbalances your forward lean during the drive and helps you get lower and accelerate faster). While heavy lifting does make you stronger, which is crucial to sprinting, Lifting weights is a double edged sword as it totally kills your impulse (ability to exert maximum force to the ground within 0.1 -0.2 seconds). By lifting, you're essentially rewiring your neuro pattern to fire slower (as it takes at least a second, longer if you're lifting near your max, to lift the load). End of the day, too much lifting heavy or lifting incorrectly WILL make you slower. It's also incredibly hard to get the impulse to fire quickly again.
      Heavy lifting is fine, as long as it's done properly, in moderation, and the vast majority of your training remains max speed sprinting.

    I don't get you guys. Most of the comments are about how great Johnson was, how he should get more recognition, etc.
    I'll tell you one thing: He cheated and got caught. Why should we give recognition to someone who cheats the rules and his fellow competitors?
    The guy had no class and doesn't deserve our recognition/respect.

      Yet Carl Lewis admitted he failed 3 drug tests and was allowed to compete by USADA.

      +footba11fan41ife So humor if you actually believe that olympic sprinters dont use drugs. Almost all sprinters of that level are on drugs so how could usain be so fast without them that he beats humans who take drugs to enhance their performance.

      Carl Lewis too. Difference is that despite failing 3 drug tests, the corrupt USADA still allowed him to compete.
