    These cars are brilliant. 3.4 engine likes to rev more. So good to drive. Just makes you smile. We need things to smile about in 2020!

      3.4 is brilliant. I've got a 99 and that motor is not only bulletproof but a joy to head and the kick at high RPMs is really great.

      Henry Atkinson it’s not “bulletproof” by any means but they are good cars.

    Haha, once the bug has bitten you...
    My personal preference is for the slim 996.1 lines (and the likelihood of IMS trouble with these earlier dual-row bearings is about ~5x less), they are just gorgeous. The engine is generally very strong, but it does have specific weaknesses, all of which can be addressed. Both bore score and IMS trouble are more likely in the 996.2, but all engines from Boxster to 996.1, 996.2 and even 997.1 have them. You alluded to the Boxster having some oil starvation trouble. Did you replace the weak stock oil pan/pickup before going racing? Otherwise it has trouble under braking in long sweeping corners, and the engine can go in a very short time indeed. Also, overrevving under downshifts can be deadly. But if you take care of the engine, and of the specific points, they can last forever. We have some 400-500k mile engines in our Facebook group. Treat it like a classic and it will give you memories galore.
    My vote is for another one, but what would you sell?

    • @CharlieDrives
      @CharlieDrives  4 года назад

      Agreed! I think the writing was already on the wall for that Boxster as I could hear issues with it before I took it to track. Bit idiotic I know but the journey was fun!!
      I think I would have to sell the Evora if I was to buy another Porsche so it would need to be a worthy replacement! (GT3 territory?)

      Charlie Drives The GT3 is a dream car, and doesn't have many of these ailments, due to the different engine, but the maintenance is much more expensive. A regular engine costs about 10k, the GT3 engine is worth more like 40k, as far as I know. If you just wanted more performance, maybe a Hartech engine would be interesting?

    The 996 is actually porsches biggest selling 911 . 😁

      Probably because it’s the model with the highest production numbers.

    The Carrera is a b-road car, a sports touring car. A GT3 is the track car. The Carrera engines simply do not have the oil system for hard tracking unless you got the X51 option. On a b-road the Carrera is a better car than a GT3, which in its 996 form is way too stiff for average b-roads. But there is no reason not to trash the Carrera into the corners. By handling the 996 is the first of the modern 911-era and since then the suspension geometry has not really changed, the handling characteristics remain. It is a very clear step forward from the air cooled era (which too are wonderful cars in their simplicity).The PASM has come but that is about active dampers, the geometry is still pretty much the same. Tyres have gotten better. Most of the best tyres today (like PS4S or the corresponding ones from Conti or GY) you can not get in 18 size. You got the PS2 which is a good tyre but definitely not at the level of the PS4S.
    The IMS problem wave seems to be passed. There are solutions for that and the loved cars have got them. The problem whose frequency in the forums seems to increase is the scoring, especially with the 3.6 liter engines. And the latest news suggest that the scoring problem is still there with even the newest Porsche engines with Lokasil-cast blocks. Audi has a similar ”Alusil” (?) process and they have exactly the same problems.
    I would recommend, once these engine are rebuilt, to re-sleeve them with proper sleeves (e.g Nikasil, Nickies) and support to the open deck block. The 3.4 engine requires always new chain slides. And they are all a bit undercooled (especially 3.6) so a lower thermostat, more powerful water pump, and other tricks to improve both water and oil cooling.
    Porsche’s oi recommendation seems to have gone from 0W40 to 5W50 as engines age. A lot of these cars have 150 000 - 200 000 kms ( 100 000-150 000 miles) which is like 4 times the distance that the Ferraris of the era have. So in fact, statistically these engines are actually quite good. The problem is that the Carrera engines are always compared to the Mezger engine which is maybe the best engine ever, developed over decades on the race track where as the Carrera engines were design project engines optimized for production. In hindsight the design team was not given enough time to iron the problems out. Remember, Porsche was almost bankruct at that time. But since Porsche apllied TPS (Toyota Production System = lean) they have become a company that makes regularly 15-20% profit from turn over and is perhaps only surpassed by Ferrari with high lux premiums. Ferrari makes something like 10 000 cars a year where as Porsche does, what, 400 000?

    For some reason I am just starting to like this Porsche. The more I see the more I find myself searching for the 996. Turbo, Turbo S and C4s have got the stance of masculinity that seem to have almost disappeared in the 997.

    the 996 C4 model is the under rated model in the range. Everybody wanted the 4S with wide body and painted brakes.
    So in C4 you get the narrow body with all wheel drive. It will become a true classic car when our grandkids look at RUclips. nice video.

    I currently have a mercedes benz SL420 (1987) low mileage and immaculate for wked's which my wife finds uncomfortable and I have been looking at changing it for a 911. All I have read tells me the 996 is the least liked and yet I don't find the appearance offends me and the performance is more than adequate for a wked/summer day drive. So I will be looking for one and quite like the C4 with the turbo body (Ithink) and red reflector full width at the rear.

    • @CharlieDrives
      @CharlieDrives  4 года назад

      Yes I would certainly recommend a C4S!! If you stretched to a turbo then it might alleviate some of the engine troubles as the Turbo has a much more robust motor, the only thing you compromise is the sound.

      Patrick Molinari Ridiculous comment.Sure, you like the 997 more, that’s fine, but to label the 996 as horrible, when it’s a brilliant drivers car is simply silly. You don’t like it, that’s fine. But “horrible” is pretty much an adolescent response.
