Do you love or hate the 996 generation Porsche 911?

Absolutely love it. Have a black 4S for the last two years that I restored to a rare to see condition. Brilliant car and so underrated it’s hard to even understand all these people who comment on it and have never driven such.
Mine is for sale as we now have a 718 spyder. If anyone in Europe is interested, let me know. Will lose ton of money on it as it is in truly crazy condition but also not in a rush to sell especially looking at people’s expectations on pricing today.
For everyone wondering if you should get one of these - if you find one on a price that is OK with you, do it. The car is absolutely beautiful to drive both as a daily and for a weekend car. 😊

Lovely 996! As a 996 owner myself I can say that the problem you mentioned at 8:38 about the PCCM+ box blocking phone storage is very real.
That’s why I started to make an OEM-looking replacement cubby to put your phone there that supports fast wireless charging. (adding wireless CarPlay to PCCM+ is very easy to do so you will end up with a fully wireless solution)

    Good video Joel!
I too upgraded to a 996 C4S (seal grey) last year after 5 years owning my black Z4 3.0, similar to your old one.
Definitely a step up from Z4 both in capability but also running costs!
I missed the snappy gear change of the Z4 so put a short shift on the 996 which like you say, transforms it. Mine is on 80k miles so I have spent about £3-4k replacing the majority of the suspension, but it feels brand new now and i'm loving it!
I can also fit the wife and 2 young boys in it!
I plan to keep mine for a few years but I also have an itch for an M4 or F-Type 5.0 like the one you reviewed last week.
    Keep up the good work!

The earlier cars look much better today than the facelift version, imho. The front will never become "the most loved" but it's ok.
But the 4S traditional Porsche rear reflector makes it the best looking water cooled from the rear. Looks a bit like the 993 from the rear. SO good looking. Why oh why Porsche got rid of the big reflector?

Great review as always. I actually think the 996 is the best Porsche 911. The first of the water-cooled generation but still retains lots of analogue feel and not obese like the new generations. I personally love the v1 GT3 and it would be my ideal spec. I was looking for 986 Boxster S but I keep coming across 996 C2 cabs for only slightly more money. Still not sure which way I'll go but I'm leaving towards to the 911 C2 cabriolet as the area I live in is ideal for top down driving all summer.

I had a a 996.2 C4 cab in Meridian followed by an X50 turbo cab in Polar Silver, both manual. Each were lovely to drive, the turbo was shockingly quick especially after sports cats and remap by DMS (450 factory to approx 550bhp) . The rarity of the X50 makes it a particularly sought after car but still less than a turbo S ( same engine and power).

I have had 997.1 (a C2 and a C2S)and 996.2 (two C2, a C4S and a turbo). All manual coupes. The 996 cars are better driver’s cars. They are lighter, have better steering and damping. The problem with them is the interior quality and the well known engine issues. The 997.1 cars have great interiors and exterior styling, but they don’t drive as well. Yes the 3.8L has better power, but the variable steering and PASM suspension ruin the experience. The engine issues are arguably worse, with bore scoring in the 3.8 being very common, and the 2005.5-2008 cars do not allow for replacement of the IMSB. If I buy another one of these I will get 996.2 C2 or C4S and replace the IMSB if it has not been done. They are great drivers.

I started out with a beautiful 997 convertible in speed yellow and wished I’d kept it. One of the things I did not like was the feeling of it being too civilised and not as involving compared to my previous e30 m3 evo. Also hated the tire noise. But she was a truly pretty car until I got my 993, it was love at first sight. That’s going no where. I think the 996 is likely closer to the 993 in feel than the 997 which is further removed from the driver. Although the 997.1/.2 GT3(RS) all of which I have driven or tracked are something altogether different including the 997 turbo. Though still love the 996

Headlights, most hated, water cooled! All this stuff started by a group of air cooled anoraks, who looked for something to moan about when Porsche changed just too much for them to cope with!
It has known issues, what car hasn't, but to drive the 996 is superior to any air cooled car.
And I am glad you didn't take the opportunity to condem the Tiptronic gearbox. Too many people talk about how so much more involving a manual is; so much a drivers car. Driving involvement is about steering, braking and cornering, not lifting your left leg, pressing a pedal and moving a gear lever. That process just interferes with the actual driving bit. Good video presentation by the way.

@@MrCaterhamr500 Sure and the 997 as well and more prone to bore scoring in the 997.1 engine and on top of higher cost of entry. You're starting to see cylinder issues in even the new engines as they age. If you. buy any Porsche expect a costly engine rebuild if it ever needs it. Otherwise go buy. a Honda/Toyota.

    • @MrCaterhamr500
      @MrCaterhamr500 2 месяца назад

@@josedasilva9210 but the point is you shouldn’t be put in the position to expect it. Even the great E92 M3 had issues with rod bearings and throttle actuators but the cost of rectifying them is a huge amount less than a £13,000 bill for a complete rebuild to Porsche engine, it’s not acceptable and Porsche has offered no help or responsibility for a poor design that future customers have to pick up the bill for.
Short of a GT3 which costs too much (I’d rather travel the world) I’ve been unimpressed by Porsche so far, they always use over-long gearing which spoils the fun and only the PDK style boxes have reasonably short gearing but I don’t want an auto.
Everybody raves about steering feel but I thought the 996, 987, and 997 were no where near as good as my Eunos Roadster MK1 or Evo 6 RS.
The badge has a certain snobbery to it but from a petrolheads point of view I’ve been unimpressed (bar a GT3 or GT4 but they cost too much and I could use the money for a 2 year gap from work and travel the world with my other half, which I would prefer)
