Civic 1.5 1.6 vtec and non vtec serving the central California area and San Francisco Bay Area
this is one of the most easy to understand head gasket tutorial out there.

Facts
Yes it is ... i did my first head gasket to this video and the car is still running today ... great video
Great video
Word Up. Ive learned everthing to do It myself, Just by watching him. so clear so easy a caveman could do It
I'm a shade tree mechanic and it took me only about 5 hours start to finish to complete the job using this video. Thanks a million 👍👍
I just did mine it took me 3 days with no shade and 108 degree weather ofc i had to keep going in for breaks but jeez this tutorial was good
Look at you guys! Three years and three months after the video was posted, and you're still helping people with this shortcut. Thanks for a thorough video.
Just love seeing how different mechanics tackle different issues. Learning new short cuts.
Thank you for not speaking to us like we're dumb. Your teaching skills are awesome. I trust this content!!!
Hey man! Single custodial dad here that got done over badly on a motorcycle for vehicle swap, desperately needed a vehicle that was good on gas and ended up with a bad head gasket amongst other problems. But this gave me the confidence to tackle the problems one at a time! Thank you so much 🙏🙏🙏
Blows my mind how easy it is to do head gaskets on these cars. Couple hours and your back in business.
4 cylinders man. Kia spectras have even more room in the bay to do jobs. I can literally fit 2 adults into the engine bay with everything in it.
cLuTcH BleacH k that’s cap I’ve seen the engine bay u couldint fit a cat in there 😭
@@MarioSantana1335 or you could do it yourself
@@cuttyb this is not the proper way....u need to take out cylinder head and check it properly wether it is warp or not...which ussualy blown head gasket is caused by overheat that makes the cylinder head warp...
So i guess this wont last long..just a month and u got ur head gasket blown again..
@@cuttyb btw ..who the hell wants to change head cylinder gasket if not blown anyway?
Thanks so much!! Bought a civic without knowing the head gasket was shot and this tutorial did the trick to repair it!! So grateful
IT WAS VERY CLEARLY EXPLAINED. I ENJOYED WATCHING FROM THE BEGINING TO THE END. THANK YOU.
The pace of your video is perfect and the way you explain how to be careful In certain spots
Im mechanically inclined, and head gaskets were always a nightmarish thought. Thank you for this. My 97 lx blew her gasket tonight, so now i got to rebuild. Again thank you.
Used this video today. Only took 2 hours. Very helpful
The absolute best head gasket replacement tutorial on the Interweb. Thank you🙏👊
Glad this video was made🙌🏾🙌🏾 makes owning a Honda even better
i dont even have a civic. But i just wanted to watch because its satisfying to watch.
I get to do this project tomorrow. Thanks to your video, I feel pretty confident about it!
Edit: Done! Definitely easier than it seems for this car.
4 year old video, but it was perfect. Exact same thing I was doing (already replaced the water pump, thermostat, etc.). Just needed a cheap head gasket replacement. This tutorial was perfect to the T. I was able to do it with quite a bit of time left in my day to enjoy! Thank you!
Thanks for this video. I'm from Trinidad and followed this step by step and it works perfectly.
My wife: Are you watching another head gasket video?
Me: yeah, but, this is the best one
Her: you fixed ours 3 months ago. . .
Josh Christian 🤣😂🤣😂
dang...so accurate
lmao that's what i do too.
😂😂😂
best video out there, followed every step and fix the head gasket after 3 hours. thanks guys for teaching me :)
Will be replacing my head gasket tomorrow. I've watched countless hours leading up to this. Your video was just going to be another video with more to fallow. However after I finish this comment and thank you I will call my cram session to a close . Your video is the one that will let me sleep confident that tomorrow won't suck. Thanks. Fingers crossed. Wish me luck. XOXO
Good luck.
Any updates lol
All this time later and your video is still helping people, like me. I appreciate your step - by- step instruction on top of the small tips like putting oil on the cam shaft for the initial start protection. I am surprised it is so easy to remove the gasket. I thought I would be somewhat stuck and demand labor in removing it. It is nice to know it comes off that clean.
i did mine yesterday, it is one of the best videos about this 👌
Thank you for a great video, helped me make up my mind to change the head with bent valves and not the whole engine.
Really glad you told all the torque specs
my man I truly truly appreciate this tutorial I cannot thank you enough I really want to get started actually tearing into this little crx I have watching your video i feel like i can do this...i mean im no certified mechanic but ive worked on all kinds of stuff over the years and I got ol Lucille a couple years ago but I been scared to crack into it and too dammed broke lol...much respect bud
Doing this without having to fuck with the timing belt is huge. I'm going to do this myself now because I didn't want the headache of the touchy timing belt. Thank you for this video my man!!!
11:50 Thank you for the clarification. I've never done this job before, but I did worry about the timing getting messed up, but then you said these. Great vid! Thanks!
many thanks to you for making a down to earth easy to understand tutorial on how to do this !! Most people spend 30 minutes patting themselves on the back or talking about something that has nothing to do with the project .yours starts right out with the first step and you keep it flowing greatly .I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do this and if you lived close to me I would hire you to do my mechanic work! Thank you again very much!
A real service to humanity you're offering here. Without the extra things that will assure another 100k+ (machining the head in particular), these are perfect instructions. Sometimes your options are limited. Those are the most important times to have someone who's able to tell you exactly what is absolutely necessary to fix your car so that it won't break down again right away, at least from that particular issue.
Thank you! I was able to complete this repair pretty much by myself thanks to your video. Only needed help putting the valve train back in. It took me a long time because of the sweltering heat, but got it done!!
I could have cleaned the surfaces of the head and gotten it machined, but honestly I didn’t have the money at this time. So this vid really helped me while being on a budget.
The slip off method, have used this many times, works great. Glad to see someone else does it!
Hey you guys! Hows it? Watched yer video but didnt wanna comment untill i put it in practice. Replaced the head gasket on my 97 civic ex. It went fine jist dandy. Thanks a shit load. Is gonna do it by the book but a picture is worth a thousand words and beats readin a bunch of different chapters. Yeah! Im real happy you posted this here how to. So once again thanks a million. One satified subscriber(now) ok later...
This is by far the best video I’ve ever seen on how do to a head gasket
Good video this is why I run civics 18 yrs
Great job!!! Amazing video. Going to attempt to replace my gasket this weekend. Thanks for uploading.
Did it go okay
how did you do
Are u ok ?
My man has changed at least 200 of those things 😂so fast !
Thank you, easy to follow and vividly showed step by step procedure taking it out and putting in all the parts.
I want my head gasket to fail already so I can give this a try lol
🤣
Kmll
Thanks, good video . I'm cleaning my head now chevy metro 4 cylinders. I did everything you did in one day.
I could not say thank you more. I bought a 98 dx sedan with 108k and it was overheating. Paid over 1,300 on replacing the thermostat and radiator, and then found out it had a bad head gasket. Was quoted 2260. Found this vid, paid 60$ for all the gaskets, my girls dad had the tools, so I did it myself. First time working on a car too. 9k miles so far no issue, and even with all the money I put into it, still cheaper than any of the user used cars people were selling with more miles on them. Y’all saved my ass 😂
Next time in the future you can replace your own thermostat and radiator real simple I thought it was hard until I just RUclips it. But congrats on the work
Replaced cylinder head and gasket with this video. Loved it!
Awsome job! You give me the confidence to do this work myself! Thx for the vid!
Most helpful video, several other videos left out the bracket on the bottom of the intake and that there is possibly another bolt on the exhaust. Got the head pulled and at the machine shop in like 3 hours. Thank you for posting!
By far the easiest to understand and do on your own with the least amount of steps and work possible, the other videos I’ve watched make it seem much more difficult.
Perfect tutorial for people who like to modify your D series motors. Especially if you’re gonna do a MINI ME SWAP
Thank-You for this detailed video. Currently doin my d16 98 ek hatch manual with 478k timing belt, waterpump, headgasket, and other gaskets. Best video!
For the budget, this is the best work.
Bro this is the best video I’ve ever seen for engine videos
Thanks you guys for showing an easy way to fix my car.
I appreciate your excellent video tutorial but the best part was your testimony. Thank You my brother in Christ.
Best video on this yet bro
Thanks for this video guys! Changing the head gasket by myself seemed daunting, but your video made it look like a breeze!
This guy is "The Gasket Master"!
Thank you! This video saved me from pure anxiety!! Seriously though, I'm about to do my intake manifold also will be looking for a video of you doing that also with the same car!
Great video Sir - Thank you for all the detailed explanations
Good job sir. One of the best videos about this issue. Thank you for showing and sharing your knowledge 🙏
Definitely thankful for this video, you guys helped me alot. Thanks!!!
I gotta do one of these for my cousin. Its his first car, 96' Civic. Thank you for noting that the belt will not jump teeth on the crank, that was my biggest fear with this whole job.
It took me two days to get new gasket on my 5.2 last time.... I know that's different engine, but this guy did it in 41 mins is just.....
thanks guys this video help a lot of people your blessing will come in many different ways
Great video, great job. I'm doing this now. I changed the distributor o- ring. It's still leaking from somewhere. The valve cover gasket was fine. I'll continue tomorrow when I get another pan for the coolant. Again, great video.
Thanks a lot, just finished the head gasket on a single cam !!! First time doing it and pretty straight forward
did you re use the head bolts ?
Great video. I'm troubleshooting a possible blown head gasket (block testing the coolant soon) and your video gave me the confidence should I need to.
Take a look at the cylinder heads, if they appear steam cleaned then yeah
dude you are awesome. my grandma had the same car same engine. this is by far the best tutoring nxt to Ericthecarguy videos. i just subscribed. 😃
just want ot say. did my D16Z in only 4 hours. all the short cuts are here and i went to start it and my battery was dead. haha
havent done a head gasket since 1985 on a 22R toy. needless to say i wasnt looking forword to it. honda is easy.
really accurate video, thanks again
Thanks for sharing the video from Philippines
Excellent step by step video.from start to finish and vice versa.hope you make some more of these videos for the not so much money to spend.super.
Thanks
Your post helped me save a lot of money and the car loves me now
After seeing this I'm going o change out my head gasket on my 93 Acura Legend, thanks
You guys ROCK! I can literally follow this, do it myself and SAVE money BIG TIME! THANK YOU GUYS!
About to change out my head gasket on my honda del sol! Thank you so much for this!!!
Awesome video! You can tell are true professionals (Rare in the 21th century) I watched some horrible videos on this, you know its going to be bad when the music starts!
Some great service there. Took less than an hour to change a head gasket.
You made this video so easy to understand ty for your help on changing a head gasket
OMG. I have a blown head gasket on my '97 Civic, and this awesome video is really going to help me. If it starts up when I done, I'm buying you a pizza!
Just curious why you didn't check the engine block for warpage, as you did for the valve head.
Thanks to this video did head gasket on my 97 hatch thank you!
Thank you for the informative video. Did my 2000 Civic exactly as you did this one.
Might want to mention the knock sensor sits right behind the head under the intake, and if not careful and you break it, that's 130$ and waiting a day to get it. Careful tilting head back!
I'm glad you mentioned that. I've redone heads on V-8s and older inline 6-cylinder engines in the pre-computer days with carburetors instead of fuel injection; so I've never taken the head off of a Honda 4-cylinder engine before. If you hadn't mentioned the knock sensor, I probably would have broken it. Thanks for mentioning it.
Listen to this guy! Broke mine
4.5 hours start to finish. Thanks!
Great video!!! There was someone who made a video similar to yours but did it on a Honda Accord. For whatever reason, the video is not available anymore. I'm thankful that you made one.
Blown head gasket often caused by overheat...thats makes cylinder head warp..so head gasket would blown......
If u just replace head gasket without chek cylinder head properly and maybe resurface it may be u got another blown gasket within a month....the other video maybe taken out by the uploader after he blown his gasket again ..lol
Great video literally was so detailed that it answered every question I was gonna ask 👌🏽
Makes me want to get a civic cheap and start a little project, u guys are great
I'm just surprised your gloves to stayed intact.
STEVE MORALES we go through a few pair during jobs.
@@gasketmasters I'm going to have to do the same job on my Civic this weekend. This video will definitely help. About how long did the job take you? I was thinking like 3 to 4 hours.
STEVE MORALES 3-4 hours is a reasonable time if you follow the video.
Good vid! @ 26:38 I thought for a moment you were pointing at the injectors or fuel rail, LOL! Then I realized you were just holding your pointer finger out of the way to show what were holding between your thumb & middle finger. Just for a second, though!
Thanks this helped me out alot
Very descriptive video and not to mention professional grade of work keep up the good work!👍🏻💯👌🏻
Your the best man thank you for saving me 1200
I have got a 1997 honda civic lx same problem losing half a gallon of coolant every 3 weeks. I am going to honda dealer and get a head gasket and put it on. My car has 292,897 miles on it. Your techniques is wonderful very fast to get job done. Also the car has passenger side wheel bearing about to fall off wobble like there is no tomorrow. I will wait for your next video on wheel bearing
Best video I’ve seen!
When you said, "if you hv too much oil in ya hand." My fingers and hands are always slippery.
I got a 97 ek and this helped soo much easy to understand just an overall great video
I wouldnt replace the head bolts, the theory is if they are used and might have stretched then that bolt wont stretch again. Think of it as the bolt settling in. makes sense, because bolts only stretch so much then stop.
#1 mechanic knows his business a joy to warch..What we do without them.
Judging by how much varnish deposit was on the rocker arm assembly and valve springs; I'd say the owner doesn't change oil as much as he or she should. I'm impressed though. You didn't lose timing.
Awesome, well shot, well narrated and easily understood vid....top marks for a head refresher ( not my first rodeo ! ). Thanks !!
Maaaaan, thank you SO much. This was a great video on this job.
Anyone else not have a 1995-2000 Honda Civic?
Just bought one , watching these videos to do my own future repairs

Sounds like it needs a valve adjustment, but seems like the customer doesn't care 😆. Awesome video regardless
Fantastic step by step video. Helped me a ton, I think my daughters honda has a blown head gasket..
