  • The 1993-1994 Atlanta Hawks had a tremendous season. Michael Jordan retired after the 1992-1993 season and as a result, it opened the door for teams like the 1993-1994 Atlanta Hawks to win the title. Unfortunately, it didn't quite work out the way Atlanta would have liked. This 90s NBA video will take a look at this ATL Hawks team, led by Dominique Wilkins, during the 93-94 NBA season. I greatly appreciate your interest in this 90s sports video. Enjoy this basketball history documentation about this forgotten NBA team.

    This 1994 Hawks video, does show NBA highlights of Dominique Wilkins, Kevin Willis, Mookie Blaylock and Stacy Augmon. ATL made it to the playoffs multiple times in the 90s. The Atlanta Hawks lost to the Chicago Bulls in the NBA playoffs in 1993 as the 7th seed. The 1994 NBA season was one of the best season in the 90s.

      I couldn't imagine what Hawks fans were thinking at the time. I grew up in Chicago but I liked Nique more than Jordan, he was my first favorite NBA player. When this trade happened, a friend told me about it and said he was traded because Lenny Wilkens thought Nique was ball-hogging it (but I could not find any solid evidence about this). Nonetheless, I was upset about this and probably unfairly, I disliked Lenny WIlkens throughout my childhood. Brian Thomas, thank you so much for the comment. I greatly appreciate it. @@90sSportsNostalgia To be fair Nique sometimes refused to pass the ball, and I didn't like his game. But during that season, he actually matured and was probably having the best season of his career. Even though both players had similar scoring stats, Nique was an aggressive scorer, which was needed at clutch time. The Hawks loss several games, after the trade, where there was no one brave enough to take over the game. Manning as an addition to the Hawks, with Nique, would have given Atlanta an NBA Championship.

  • @pebutts
    @pebutts 3 года назад +12

    The Wilkins trade made no sense then and it still makes no sense today. You just don't trade your best player and the greatest star in the history of your franchise after the all-star break in a season where you're a legitimate title contender, no matter what the contract situation is.
    Sportswriters often know no little to nothing about the game of basketball and develop personal preferences and animosities toward players. Writers loved Danny Manning, probably because he had a truly great NCAA run in leading Kansas to the championship. A title in college leads a player to be labeled "a winner". Conversely, Dominique was often referred to as a loser, a selfish player, and choke artist, despite the fact that he took a Georgia team that hadn't posted a winning record since 1971-72 to three consecutive winning seasons, basically building Bulldog basketball.
    Nique then followed that up with success in the pros, taking an Atlanta team that was mired in mediocrity and turning them into a contender in the East before a series of dumb moves by the front office destroyed his supporting cast. Remember Reggie Theus? Moses Malone? Drafting Jon Koncak ahead of Karl Malone, Joe Dumars, and Chris Mullin, then signing him to a massive contract? Meanwhile, Manning had been the best player on a Clippers team that was mediocre at best. As for Manning's alleged ability to fill up the stat sheet, his numbers in 93-94 really weren't any better than Wilkins, despite playing more minutes per game. Moreover, Dominique could create his own shot whenever he wanted, something that's invaluable in playoff ball, while Manning never could.
    Yes, Dominique was in his thirties while Manning was younger and seemed to have a lot of miles left, but it simply made no sense to trade for a player who was going to be a free agent at the end of the season, especially for a player as beloved in the community as Nique. Wilkins wasn't going to leave Atlanta, while Manning didn't want to play there and told the Hawks that. In the end, the Hawks traded a first round pick and the most popular player in franchise history for nothing, while their fans felt like they had stabbed a Georgia treasure right in the back when he finally had gotten a good team around him.
    All in all, this may be the worst trade in NBA history. Other trades have been lopsided in one team's favor, but this trade killed the franchise. The Hawks have never recovered and it's been almost thirty years.

    CLOWN SITUATION all the way around!! For starters EVEN at 34, Nique was HANDS DOWN a better player than Manning! The NOTION that Manning was this BETTER all around player is ALSO BS!!! Nique's career high in rebounds was 9.0!! Nique was a 6'8 SF doing that! Manning's career high in boards was 7RPG. Manning's career high in dimes was 4.2. Nique's career high was 3.8. And scoring wise, Nique was FLAT OUT an alpha dog #1 option scorer type of superstar. Nique had the MOST CAREER POINTS for the SF position in NBA history UNTIL Bron passed him by a few years ago. Manning was NEVER an alpha dog scorer.
    And when the Hawks made that BS trade, they were 1st in the East at that time!! When they traded Nique, the Hawks DIDN'T have an alpha dog scorer on the roster anymore. Manning wasn' t a player who could dominate games scoring like that. He was an All Star player FOR SURE. Made 2 All Star games.
    BUT Nique was a SUPERSTAR PLAYER!! Manning's ALL AROUND game is OVERRRATED!!! He just happened to be a 6'10 player who could swing between the SF and PF spots. And his skillset was VERY SKILLED for a player that size at that time! BUT he was NEVER the dominant force Nique was! DOMINANCE is what separates the superstars from the All stars. And the All Stars from the good players. And on top of it, Manning LEFT to join the Suns!! LMAO!!!

Although I was young and beginning to take an interest in basketball, I remember in the playoff series against the Heat that they had a problem scoring, which prolonged the series. This lack of scoring also caught up with team in Pacers series, which they lost, and this was there only serious shot at a finals playoff series against a Knicks that I felt they could have defeated.

    As much as the Braves and Falcons are criticized for having great regular seasons and then folding in the playoffs, the Hawks have made the playoffs just as often as any elite team in recent NBA history. The problem is that they only made it to the ECF once in Atlanta history. I guess the Falcons & Braves mistakes are more magnified because some of their failures came while playing in the championship for their respective sports.

When I play NBA Live 95 for SNES (which has the 93-94 roster), I trade Manning for Wilkins and just go to town!!

I hope to get to doing a video about the Lakers in the '90s (focused more on the mid-90s) with Eddie Jones and Nick Van Exel in the backcourt. But thanks for the comment as I enjoyed reading it.

    THAT was our chance. That 94 team WITH Wilkins was our chance of winning a title in ATL. It's all our front offices fault, why would you trade the best player and still to this day best player (If Trae ends up being it which I think he will) for a really tbh decent player? It's now known as one of the worst trades and most surprising trades in NBA history to me. Luckily Dominique loves ATL so much he's not mad about it. But I think even he said that was the chance. He would've went RAMBO on those Pacers and in the finals against Houston. To me since the Hawks got to ATL from St Louis. We have only had I say about 5 chances to actually contend for a title. FIVE out of over 30 years in ATL. The first was in the early 70s with Pistol Pete and Sweet Lou Hudson, that duo was known to be the first dominant scoring duo in the NBA and now you see that everywhere these days. But we ended up trading Pete to Jazz because supposedly players didn't like his flashy play. Which sucks because we also had a chance to add DR.J to that team when he was leaving the ABA. A lot of ppl forget that! Then we got the early dominant Dominique team in the 80s with Spud Webb and Doc Rivers. But we got torched by Larry Bird in 86 when we got close to a appearance in the finals against u guessed it Houston. Then of course that 94 team, then you got the Mutombo and Steve Smith Hawks in the late 90s (with one of the best jerseys under Niques) but they could never get over the hump. Then lastly you got our most recent team the 2015 that won over 60 games but didn't have that star player to pull us through and we got smashed by LeBron. It's been a sorry mediocre history for my Hawks. If only we had a solid dedicated owner back in the day we would be a very decent recognized team in the NBA. Luckily things now are looking up for us, we have now the first REAL owners in a long time that are dedicated to the team with the Ressler family. To me they are the best owners we've ever had in a long time and are really creating a great team and culture to take seriously in the NBA. I know this season was trash because of Collins getting suspended, but we actually have the best young starting five no one is paying attention to. With now Clint Capela on the team we have eyes at the playoffs next year, and we just got back our real colors and true uniforms just days ago. I think now you will see a different decade for the ATL Hawks and hopefully with Trae leading the way with Cam Reddish, this decade will see championships and hopefully a dynasty no one see coming.

      Thank you so much for the comment. You asked a great question. I did not look it up but the only instance I can think of (sorry as this MLB) is when the Red Sox traded Nomar Garciaparra traded him in the middle of the season in 2004 as the Red Sox went on to win the WS that year. Now the Red Sox did not have the #1 seed in 2004 and Nomar was not their best player, but he may have been the most popular player for Boston fans at the time. This is the only instance I can think of that was close to your question and maybe when the SD Chargers traded John Jefferson in 1981 (he was a really good player but maybe not their best). Thanks for the comment and thanks for watching the video.
