Dominique Wilkins spoke about his unexpected trade from the Atlanta Hawks to the LA Clippers in 1994, attributing it to disagreements over payment. At the peak of his career and as a free agent, Wilkins claimed his move was prompted by the Hawks' reluctance to honor their financial commitments to him. He also exposed some controversial happenings during his time with the Clippers. Wilkins recalled numerous startling incidents involving then Clippers' owner Donald Sterling, including manipulation of player's game times to favor opposing team's players and disruptive locker room visits. He also hinted at Sterling's alleged racism but refrained from commenting extensively. Despite the controversies, Wilkins didn't seem to regret the move, saying the NBA did the right thing by handling the Sterling situation decisively.

The NBA wanted to keep Donald Sterling. The only reason the NBA got rid of Sterling is because they had too, not because they wanted too. That is an abomination.
That trade ripped my heart out!! I still hold a grudge against the Hawks organization, Lenny Wilkins, and Danny "NO KNEES" MANNING. Something like that would never happen today. They know they did Dominique wrong. They tried to make up for it by putting a statue in front of the arena. I think that was the best shot for Dominique and the hawks to get a title. No Jordan, plus, they just beat the eventual champions the Houston Rockets a few days before Dominique was traded. SMH!!!

I'm a Bulls fan and I remember this trade when I was a kid and thought it was absolutely stupid... Danny Manning was nowhere Nique's level and the Hawks paid for that for years
Yea, I don't think Lenny was a big fan of Nique. The bad thing about it is Manning only played 20 something games, so Atlanta didn't get much at all. Atlanta looked right that year before the trade, they did Nique dirty.

As a FORMER hawks fan not only did I not trust them anymore, but I started to distrust the NBA in general. A couple years later I just became a casual fan. Shit is rigged to this day.

They traded Nique for Danny Manning and Manning ended up signing with the Suns as a free agent in the offseason. The Hawks basically lost Nique and had nothing to show for it.

Scottie was also drafted by Seattle What was cruel about those guys getting traded to the second teams they went to? Nothing cruel about either of those trades, especially compared to Wilkins. He found out he was being traded by watching the midday news.

Looking back at it , it feels unfair that Sterling ended up with all those billions with the sale of the team. All the other owners did a much better job running there teams and just for the fact that the Clippers are in LA he cashed in. Meanwhile if that team was in another city the shannigans wouldn't have lasted as long.

I still get mad when I think about that trade to this day. The Hawks were going to win the East that year and possibly the Chip. Danny Manning is a decent person. But he was no Dominique. He too left as a free agent at the end of the season for much less than the Hawks offered. I never will forget Coach Lenny Wilkens try to sell us on Manning, “This guy can do so much more things”. Bull! I didn’t start going to Hawks games again until the Josh Smith/Joe Johnson era.

At 12 years old that trade to the clippers was a traumatizing experience for me! The clippers were the worst team in the NBA at the time and they effectively killed ‘Nique’s career and cursed their own franchise with that move. To this day I still wonder what the hell the Hawks front office was smoking.

The Hawks screwed Dominique for a chance of a championship. 1993-1994 season was the chance for him to win a championship.
That was perhaps the dumbest trade ever. Dominique was just 2 years removed from recovering from an Achilles injury that has ruined countless careers and yet he was playing the best basketball of his life and they traded him. I would have played it out and then taken my chances with free agency. But that just proves that the owner's number one priority is not championships.
