I was in my early teens in 1962 and, baby, was it grand! Oh, how I ache for those olden days. I was HAPPY. I knew in my heart things were going to be the same for all my life. Then, I grew up. Life slapped me in the face. I experienced things I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. I'm getting old, bitter, cynical and sick. Like Steve McQueen* said-"what happened; WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED?" I miss those days. As Mr/Ms Grules already said-"what a sweet time in history". * The Sand Pebbles last line.
At 73, I record and watch old movies from the movie channel. If it was made after 1965, I think about it long and hard by record it. When my wife asked why I watch these old movies, especially the ones from the 40s and 50s? My response is, “Things were normal back then.” The ending of Shane still makes me tear up. It’s too long to go into, but the child in me identifies with that kid.. To top it off, go to IMDB and read about the sad life of that young actor.
Me...... Susie was my cousin. Her mother and my grandmother were sisters. When I was a little girl I idolized her and I always loved her music. I remember being in the living room pretending I I was her I idolized her
I suffered my 1st broken heart when this was in the charts. Honestly I thought I would never live/love again. His name was William. Now here I am about to celebrate my 40th wedding anv with two wonderful grown up sons & my husband who happens to be Murray , not Willam..Peggy Wood (Aotearoa)
My mom used to sing me love songs from the 50s & 60s when I was a little girl and couldn't fall asleep at night. And for some reason THIS song always seemed the saddest. Especially when the girl tells her mom a white lie that she's crying about a sad movie instead of her heartbreak. My mom's been gone over 6 years now and I have never been able to listen to ANY of those old love songs without feeling like I was just gonna cry a river. Tonight was the first time I listened to this song in forever...💔 I still hear my mom's sweet voice when I hear these lyrics & I always will. ❤️
My grandpa played this when we were in the car and went to change it because he thought I wouldn't like it and I asked him to turn it back on. This is now my favorite song.
I remember singing this song as a child and having so much fun, as I sang the lyrics. I am now 23 years old and can now fully appreciate this song due to knowing the real meaning and purpose behind every word.
Omg my aunt taught me this song when I was about 10 ( a lifetime ago). I wish she was still with us to share this with her. On the flip side of the "45" was a song called Norman. Great tune as well.
Sue Thompson was born Eva Sue McKee in 1925 in Nevada, Missouri, She was around 35 or 36 when She recorded her two hit singles Sad Movies and Norman. Sue Thompson was still singing way into her 70's and even early 80's Sue Thompson is a living legend.
My grandma used to sing this to me when i was a child, to the point i remembered every word. Stumbling upon this again after many years is one of the best things that ever happened to me.
What makes me cry is that there are no songs like this these days. I love the music my parents loved. Born too late for great music like this ... mucho regretto.
I am probably alot younger than you would expect for someone to like this music (born in 1962) grew up listening to Sue Thompsons at my aunts house on 45's....my favorite was Red Hot Henrietta Brown. I used to sing it for my boys and act silly for them when they were young. Oh wow the memories.....Thanks for making me smile.
The first time I listened to Sue Thompson and her songs was in early 1960's when We were in Thaland training on civil aviation! Time flies and so sweet are those memories! Loving you Sue!
Heard this song on an 8 hr road trip, my brother in law was driving and my son was in the back. The pure harmony woke me out of rem sleep and I stayed up the rest of the way off the frequency it gave me
Remember my oldest sister singing this to me when she came in from work. She told me years later I wouldn't go to sleep until she sang it to me Mighty fine song miss thoes days
I haven't heard this song in about 40 years and I'm only 47 years young. Memories of long, long ago In A Very Different Type Of World Than Today. RIP Ms. Rosie Espinoza and Carol Tigueros I Love You Both...
When I worked in a factory in my teens we use to play this all the time as one of the bosses was called Norman very embarrassing for him but we loved it.
Just got out of a sad movie with our grandchildren where the leading actor died in the end and I cried. Beck in the van, played this song to them. Date 12/30/22 Sure this song reminds me of my teen years when this song hit the charts. Absolutely timeless.
This was my generation. Have danced many a time to this one. Loved it then and still do. I still sing it in the shower. Thanks for the memories Sue. Love ya'.
Even though I wasn't born those years, this song represents how beautiful to live those days. I really envy my parents..they witnessed and experienced living a simple life.
I used to sit in my dad's lap and sing this song - at least the chorus - when I was 3. I loved it! This was the only song I knew then besides the ABC song. Good memories!

I'm old now, and I don't have long for this side of life, and I still cry watching sad movies. Sometimes I wonder why I watch sad movies or listen to sad songs, it does hurt in a way, bringing back memories of long ago.

Sad movies always make me cry
He said he had to work so I went to the show alone
They turned down the lights and turned the projector on
And just as the news of the world started to begin
I saw my darlin' and my best friend walk in
Though I was sittin' there they didn't see
And so they sat right down in front of me
When he kissed her lips I almost died
And in the middle of the color cartoon I started to cry
Oh-oh-oh sad movies always make me cry
Oh-oh-oh sad movies always make me cry
So I got up and slowly walked on home
And mama saw the tears and said "what's wrong?"
And so to keep from telling her a lie
I just said "sad movies make me cry"
Oh-oh-oh sad movies always make me cry
Oh-oh-oh sad movies always make me cry
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh
Sad movies make me cry
