    I love the fact that they performed two selsctions. You would never see that now. In 1978ish I attended a Stephan Grappelli show near Brattleboro Vt. He performed a long show and then came out for a final encore. He sat down at the piano and started to play it as the audiance stood silently in awe listening. I remember my face was frozen with a dropped jaw for the duration of that beautiful, impressive and graceful encore.

      @ Peter Grubbs I got see Stephane at a concert in Houston in the early 80s. So memorable playing all those tunes with his longtime partner Django. It was a treat to hear him. The concert was played at a swanke auditorium and my cousin and I felt out of place with all the folks in tuxedos and fancy dresses, but still remember how amazing this guy was at his age. Great memories. Glad I found this video.

NO question who was playing those keys. One of the best shows I saw while I was getting my diploma there.

I only know the exact date because I found a CD of that night's show, on Warner Archives. Incredible players, and I remember Stephane sat down at the piano as the band took a break, and said, "Excuse me while I practíce" and I thought, wow - he just turned his violin into a piano and kept right on playing beautifully!

    you'd never see any performance like this on live TV now because it's pure music. Grappelli was a beast, as is everyone there on stage with him, the least of which is Mark O'Connor. It takes a purist of sorts to appreciate this stuff. The Grisman/Tony Rice stuff is in another realm also. In a way, I'm surprised that Carson took the leap to have them on the show, as this stuff is way left of main-stream music.

    The 70’s had the musicians of the 1930’s thru the 60’s, plus all the wildly talented up and comers. We’ll never have a collection of musical geniuses all performing at a high level like that ever again. What an amazing time for the artists and audiences. Fast forward to 2022.... better yet, just thankful that I lived during an era when I got to watch John Lee Hooker, Larry Coryell, Humble Pie, and countless others, in packed venues with crowds who weren’t thinking about anything other than having a good time and enjoying real music.

Stephan gave him Marks number, and Mark took the gig backing up Stephan on guitar. Stephan didn't know Mark also played violin until one night someone in the audience shouted out for Mark to play some violin. So after the gig Stephan asked Mark to play something on the violin, which was received very favorably by Stephan. Hope I got the story right.

He was old and frail, so frail in fact that the person escorting and aiding him on his walk across the stage to his chair was the late great Jeff Healey (Jeff was an awesome singer and guitar player with a unique style of playing ... oh, and he was also blind from very early childhood.)

      lol You know you've got a talented ensemble when MARK O'CONNOR is "some guy on rhythm guitar". That's like saying Union Station has "Oh, and some guy on dobro.". (Awesome performance, and I probably couldn't even keep up on the rhythm parts.)

      not just some guy , but some 17 year old guy from the wrong side of Seattle. The cream always rises to the top no matter where it starts out.

    Simple question: I've been trying to find the name of the first song they played. I heard it many times on an independent radio station in the 80's and can't find it on RUclips. Drives you crazy sometimes.

    I've seen this incredible clip before, and always wondered why Mark didn't take a solo on any of the three instruments that he can play so well. Anyone know?

    I saw the Kansas City date referred to at the Uptown Theater. They then went to Winfield Kansas and performed at the Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival. David got in a little trouble with another type of grass there.

    S.Grappelli played with Django Reinhardt in Paris and other places YEARS ago...

    • @megatrollificus
      @megatrollificus 6 лет назад

      Ah yeah, the legendary "Hot Club of France". You still hear Djangos' influence today, but I was unaware that Mark considered Grappeli his mentor. Live and learn, and it actually makes sense, though Marks' eclecticism kind of hides the influence unless he playing some hot jazz stuff. Wonderful.

    I must say the music is "O SO FINE;" however the entire group is looking good as far as their choice of attire. David Grisman looks like David, not Dawg. Love those pants he's wearing.

      PPMFJI, but that's a bit more than rhythm guitar. lol If I could play rhythm guitar like that I'd be touring. Still boggles me that they can move so quickly and never miss a note.

    What are the tunes? Such a great bunch of musicians. So, Carson messed up the name of Grappelli's and Django's Hot Club of France. Big deal. Only a few of us would notice that after being blown away by this great music.
