    Wow, I didn't realize some signs could be that close together. I guess when you are starting out you really need to pay attention to how you do it. Date and dessert are pretty simple signs. Thanks so much!

      Yes indeed! Small differences can make a big change in meaning. In both sign languages and spoken languages, these are called "minimal pairs" - when just one subtle shift changes meaning.

    Thank you Meredith!
    Yeah, same gesture with different position or height can have different meaning, have to careful about that. 🙂

    A way to help people remember is DATE with the D shapes pointing up looks like two people coming together (The index fingers being like standing people), while DESSERT is flatter like a plate 🍽️
    (Hopefully there isn't a different sign that's completely flat, or this mnemonic falls apart, haha)

    These two are very similar, the sign for meet (as in nice to meet you) is pretty similar to dessert too. Thanks for making this video.

      Oh YES "Meet" would've been good to include here! Another video :) but yes - MEET would be the index fingers as a "1" handshape -- NOT a "D" handshape, and the hands move together once, not multiple times.

    hello! i am just starting to learn asl, and was wondering if it matters which hand i use? im left handed, so i pretty frequently use my left, or if its a sign with both hands and one hand is doing a motion, i use my left. is this okay? or would that be perceived as backwards

    • @ASLMeredith
      @ASLMeredith  2 года назад

      Hi Justine, great question! This other video answers it: ruclips.net/video/7aUa50q0GcE/видео.html but in short - yes you can use your left hand as your dominant hand! So you'd want to mirror what I'm doing on the screen with my right hand. Hope that helps!

    I know this is inappropriate. I have been rewatching The Office on peacock. Maybe Meredith watches The Office. But I saw the thumbnail of this video and immediately thought in my head "That's what she signed". You can delete this comment. I just thought it was funny.
