    We have been waiting for this moment all our lives it seems! Joe is soon to retire from the military & we've been thinking long & hard on where we want to retire. Where we want our forever homestead to be. I couldn’t be happier & Im not surprised that we chose ALASKA!
    For more Alaska content from the Watsons watch our ALASKA CABIN PLAYLIST:
    • Life in Alaska! || Hom...
    While several states were contenders, we always kept going back to ALASKA! We were stationed in Alaska twice with the military, 7 years total. Alaska has a special place in our hearts, little Parker was born there and we're just feeling called to go back.
    Securing our forever homestead before he retires, is important to us. Having that peace of mind that it's there, ready & waiting! We bought the most adorable OFF grid cabin on 15 acres with a pond. It's everything I've ever dreamed of. It's going to be a lot of hard work as the ONLY structure on the property is the cabin itself. We'll be experiencing some TINY living with only 600 square feet in our new home!
    This cute Friesian style cabin has 2 bdrms, 1 bath, an adorable kitchen & a beautiful mac daddy wood burning stove! It is currently off the grid, with a well & brand new septic system. We're working with an Alaskan company to design a solar system for the homestead.
    We'll be adding a chicken coop of course, a LARGE greenhouse or hoop house to extend the garden growing season, a shop for Joe, a guest cabin for my Grandpa and I'm sure many other projects! You know how we roll :) Busy, busy...
    Just an hour from the nearest town...yet right off our front porch is nothing but Alaskan wilderness as far as the eye can see! Full of lakes, creeks and abundant wildlife! I see a lot of hunting, fishing, 4-wheeling & snow machining in our near future!
    Thanks for hanging out with us on this video & taking an adventure with us! I'm SOOOOO excited to take you guys along with us on this journey. It's almost time to close this chapter of our lives and start a new...I'm so excited. God willing...we'll be HOME soon! Cheers!

    First I’d like to thank your husband for his service to our country. Second I’d like to thank you his wife and family for serving with him. I’m retired from the Coast Guard and was one of the first woman to enlist on active duty in the early 70’s when they allowed woman to join as regular and not reserves. I was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska in 1978 to 1983. I absolutely loved it. I bought a log cabin on almost 4 acres and now regret selling it. I’m now 65 and it’s always been my dream to live in a log cabin in the middle of the woods. It’s just myself and my golden retriever now. My daughter recently moved from Michigan to Portland, Oregon for her job but lives in Vancouver, WA, so I’m thinking maybe I might think about moving back to Alaska. I’m an avid fisherman, love to camp still use my tent no glamming for me haha.. Such a wonderful state to raise a family. May the good Lord bless you and keep you safe and healthy as you begin this new journey in your life’s.

    My husband was stationed in alaska also. That cabin is perfect! Folks from the lower states focus on square feet, but in alaska less is more. A solid foundation, good sturdy walls, a top quality wood burning stove, functioning water, septic, and a dependable energy source ALL usurp square feet. Heating is top priority and smaller is definitely better, by far. That is a solid little home you got there. Best wishes. Oh ..first thing ...put the tennis shoes away, permanently. You'll be in boots year round. Warm ones for the winter and regular waterproof wellies in the warmer weather. Watching them tiptoe around that pond in their "lower states" shoes was funny. :)

      Hi Susan. I couldn’t agree with you more. We’ve spent the last 4 yrs downsizing. Seems like every time we’ve moved we get a smaller house. These big houses are just a waste of space and more for me to clean! 🤣 This lil cabin is the perfect size. We have all we need and most of all…we have each other & that’s what I really want the focus to be on, is each other. And yes BOOTS! Haha. We had extra tuffs & all that gear when we lived up there before but it’s been 8 yrs! So we’ll def be investing in appropriate attire & gear before we head up! Thank you for your encouraging words! Means so much! 😊💗

    First of all, thank you all for your service. I say you all because so many forget the sacrifices the family makes while their husband/wife are on an unaccompanied tour or in combat. I totally agree with you in regards to your feelings about Alaska. The one and only time I was there for 2 weeks, I felt like God was standing next to me with his arm outstretched saying I have created all this for my children to thrive, respect, and care for to maintain its beauty. I know I will never get to go back and see it again, so I watch every channel I can that pertains to Alaska and living off grid. Just remember to carry guns anytime you walk into the woods, especially when bears are out. Seeing all that tall brush concerned me as to what was hiding in it. I know you all will accomplish your dream. Also, I watch two channels regarding Alaska, Simple Living Alaska and This is my Alaska. God Bless and protect you all on your new journey.

We're pretty pushed out there so even if I'm on my own property, it's very likely we'll see a ton of wildlife & I never want to be caught off guard! I'm most excited about the wide open spaces. Just Alaska wild as far as the eye can see. I feel so free when I'm up there. I also watch SLA...I've never watched "This is My Alaska," I'll have to check that one out too! Have a blessed day!

    Your new country is great. You are young enough to handle a living change, and old enough to understand Alaska's living requirements. Electricity is always at the top of the list. A nice quiet Honda generator would be a good temporary solution. Generator noise usually keeps the animals away. This is ok for now. I am happy for you and yours.

  • @garybonz
    @garybonz 3 года назад +1

    I am off grid, raised 3 kids who are now adults on solar, having more batteries is better than having more pannels. More power storage (batteries) will allow you to run the generator less, which is a good thing.

    • @HomeFreeAlaska
      @HomeFreeAlaska  3 года назад

      So we're currently working with a solar company up there & the local electric company to get estimates on bringing power out to the property. We will most likely go with whichever is cheaper. But we are leaning towards pulling out power. We plan to have several exterior structures, garage, guest cabin for my grandfather etc., all will need power & it'd be much easier if we were on grid. We'll see tho, time will tell! :)

    Welcome to Alaska and congratulations on finding your new homestead! I live in the Mat-Su Valley and came from VA, as well so I know the transition you're about to experience. My husband is retired Coast Guard which is what brought us to Alaska. We are creating a homestead near the base of Hatcher Pass - not far from the Raney homestead of Homestead Rescue and we also have bees and chickens so reach out if you'd like info on the local bee clubs and farm community as you prepare to move (it's a completely different ball game than the lower 48) or other local resources. Also stay away from that large leaf you showed - I couldn't tell from the quick shot of it but it looked like Devils Club/Cows Parsnip/Pushkie which is akin to poison ivy but much more intense!

    I lived in Alaska for 7 and 1/2 years I loved it. Get your husband to look up on the RUclips channel how to build an alternator generator you will need it. Once you get it built you can run your entire house without having to pay for fuel to run a generator. In the winners solar is great but the days are not as long there and the winter time so you won't get as much sunlight for the solar. Enjoy your new home. It looks like you have enough room to have a really good garden. The vegetables grow to be awesome sizes in Alaska in the summertime.

Here in Europa I'm following some families who are now living in Sweden, semi- off grid. They make these choises aspecially when children are involved. Peace and quite (Sounds of nature) is what they all want to have. I wish your family the same!

    Thats awsome congratulations ! The house is very similar to the home me and my wife bought two years ago in Quebec in terms of size and build. You'll see in the winter heating with the wood stove it will warm up very quickly. Upstairs in our loft area with the stove running we often end up having to open windows to cool it down a bit even in the 5- degrees. Its good you have a fan too youll need it in the winter to push that hot air back down ! Im looking forward to seeing how your projects unfold up there. Im a fairly new subscriber its good to see some nice family homesteading channels like this
